The Toshiba Pocket PC and probably others have three brightness
levels plus off. The XDA I bought a week ago, only allows on
and off.
I don't seem to have the latest ROM version though, so I'm
looking at upgrading it. Are later versions the same? If so,
are there any programs that allow more control of the
backlight?

I am having the same problem. I own a t-mobile XDA (MDA?). Although registry settings seem to solve the problems, my hardware doesn't accept brightness or contrast settings

XDA: PW10B1
Rom version: 3.14

You can change brightness in more steps than on/off by manipulating the registry? I tried it and has no effect on mine :( It's stil 0 for off and 1+ for on...
