Looking for instructions or someone who has experienced taking an XDA apart in order to replace the touch-screen.

replacing the screen is a fairly easy job. You just remove the back screws, (you might need a small hex shaped screw driver) and prize appart. There are clips around the inside of the outer casing holding them together, then there are 2 small black screws on the main PCB. removing this will expose the back of the screen. Once you have done that you remove the four screws at the top and bottom of the screen, and its away. You will need to remove 3 ribbon cables that attach the screen to the main PCB, but other than that, job done.

Problem i have is i don't know where to get a replacement screen from, cos i smashed mine. If you find out, let me know.

Hey, Montanna.
Was it as easy to put together as it was to take apart.
My XDA is in pieceses now, and I'm a litle worried
Everything will be fine, I know. But you get attached to the little guy :)
If I ever got to name a pda I'd call it Gizmo. U know, from Gremlins.
That would be a great theme btw...

Is it the whole screen you ordered, or the touch screen or the lcd screen?

site seems bit tacky? are the legit? :?

09-04-2003, 08:02 AM
Yes they are legit. They delivered very fast, and just what they promised.

But I fucked up...
Stefan, that is something I didn't think of before I placed the order.
I needed the LCD, but I thought I only had to replace the screen. I thought “the screen” was one unit.
I didn’t read the mails I got from http://pdascreens.co.uk properly. They clearly said that they sell touch panels and nothing else.

Now I have 2 working touch panels and a broken LCD screen.

I bought my XDA on EBay, that is why I had to repair the thing myself. I am now thinking about selling it as “with broken screen” if anyone is interested…

I’ll never purchase anything this expensive on EBay again. Had I bought it from a store would this be the store’s problem, not mine.

Damn, that sucks.
My lcd brooke when I fell and fell on my xda :(
I was very glad to read that they sold screens for 55 euro, to bad.
I also read that someone sent his xda to o2 for repair, and he had to pay 70 english pounds for a new screen and a new outer case.
Now I have sent mine for repair and got a letter from o2,
the costs wil be 289 euro. Woooooooooooow,
that was not what I was thinking about.
But I need the little thing and buing a new one is 599 euro so thats more than twice the repairing price.
I don't know what you paid for yours, but mayby O2 wants to repair yours to.

Before you give up try contacting PDA screens international on www.palmscreens.com, and ask them VIA EMAIL if they know where you can get a 'LCM' for the XDA, they might be able to help you with advice on how to get your hands on the actual screens (LCM's) but you will have to be very specific as to whether is the its the complete screen or the touchscreen thats broken!!! in my case it was the touchscreen :( DON'T KNOW IF THEY REALLY CAN HELP BUT ITS A START AND IF THEY DON'T, WITH ENOUGH PEOPLE CONTACTING THEM ABOUT THE SAME THING......YA NEVER KNOW!!!!! I'm a big believer in people power so even if you've heard they don't, don't just stop there

Hello. I'm new here. But i do have some tips about replacing the Wallaby screen. www.Ipaqrepair.com is now repairing xda screens and digitizers in the US. Mine is being repaired at this moment. The only reason I don't have a warranty is i have a pre-production SX56 release. Anywhoo I thought some people in the US would like to know.

E-MAN

P.S. Ipaqrepair is changing it's name to PDAsmart.com at the end of the month and thats where they'll list it.

I just succeeded in transplanting a touch screen from one xda to another. I almost gave up because it seemed the touch screen is glued to the rest of the screen. Now that does seem to be true but the glue isn't that strong :-)) Here's how I did it:

- Remove the screen module from the device
- On the top there's a yellow sticker, remove it
- Get a knife between any of the screen holders (where the four screws go) and pry the two pieces apart. You'll notice some strange sounds, this is just the glue letting go.
- You may have to use a knife to push the latches on three sides (all exept the side where the cables are) down.
- Only the bottom plate comes off and not the touch screen glass as I expected.

Good luck!

I'll have my digital camera back in a couple of weeks, if anyone is interested I can make some pictures of the process.

XDA are for sale all the time on eBay in the UK. Prices you can expect to pay are
225 GBP for 32Mb version
350 GBP for 64Mb version

If you break your screen it is often cheaper to buy a replacement 'nearly new' unit complete.

I would be interested in seeing the procedure on pictures. I bought my xda a few months ago, but noone advised me to buy screenprotectors. So using the 'Letter Recognizer scratched the screen after some time.

As I was reading this forum, I read that a replacement touchscreen would only cost about 55€. And that it is possible to replace all by yourself. That sounds great!

I just wanted to check one more thing: am I right there are two screens: one called lcd-screen and one called the touchscreen? And the one I scratched with the stylus, would be the touchscreen.

I have no technical background, so I can imagine that my questions probably sound very amateuristic to most of you technical specialists.

FYI-
If your XDA is from T-Mobil, they have a replacement policy that if the PDA dies from non-abuse, they replace it free, your abuse they replace it for $70. I just did this (broke my LCD). Got a replacement, paid $15 to get it overnight. You must return the old unit (get prepaid postage and reusable box) within 7 days. Worked great for me....$70 is much cheaper than a new LCD.

Hello all,

I'd really like to see those pictures as well. If you get round to taking them PLEASE let us know where to look. I'm about to order from the DIY screen from PDAsmart (by the way, has anyone else actually done this? Is it OK?) and I need to know it can be done before I spend the $99 (I'm in the UK).

Thanks,

Can you please tell me more about removing the front- and backcover?
You said there are some clips that should be held together but I cant see them. Is there a way of removing the covers without damaging them?
My frontcover is pretty damaged and I want to fix it.
Your help is greatly appriciated. :D

Hey there, sorry for the delays but here is a little manual I made on how to open up the xda. http://www.xs4all.nl/~obouwman/xda Hope this helps. Comments are welcome. Please send them as a private message.

I also put up a zipped up version here http://www.xs4all.nl/~obouwman/xda/xda.zip 'cause for some bizarre reason not all pics are showing on the site. I'll look into this later.

reference the above link to instructions, the "strange", screws need a T6 torx tool. You can banjax the screws very easily and the tool costs very little, so better safe than sorry.

Hey everyone

I have two broken xdaIIs!
One with a broken screen (bleeding) but the device itself works ok, and the other with an ok screen, but the rest seems quite badly damaged.

I tried the links above, but they don't seem to work. Has anyone replaced a screen recently that would be able to give me some pointers / advice?

Thanks a lot

I tried the links above, but they don't seem to work. Has anyone replaced a screen recently that would be able to give me some pointers / advice?

Thanks a lot

This is how I replaced one screen (LCD + Light screen + touch screen) from one qtec to another:
1- unscrew the four screws in the back of the xda
2- with a thin wide knife or some thing alike, slowly separate the two sides of the xda
3- remove the part that holds the battery
4- unscrew the other four screws that hold the board (one of them was protected with a small OK sticker for the warranty)
5- there are three cables attached from the board to the screens, one is wide, and it goes to the middle of the board, for this one, you have to lift the cable look upwards, with a thin knife, push upwards from the side of the cable look that is towards the edge of the xda, this will set the cable free. The other two cables has their looks moving horizontally, each look has two edges one at each side, push them towards the edge of the device, this will set the other two cables free.
6- At this stage, you can separate the board from the screen.
7- Unscrew the four screws holding the screen and remove it.
8- Replace screens and reassemble your xda the same way

Hope this helps a bit

If have looked into this subject some months ago when I broke my XDA screen (bleeding thing). Then I concluded that it would be much cheaper for me to search for a broken XDA with a working screen on E-Bay or on any other pda forum (about 50 euros), instead of letting this XDA repair in a shop (about 200 euros). I have now successfully replaced two of my broken XDA's with this method .. and it saves you lots of money.

Thanks to all the guys who posted advice on this thread about replacing the touch screen. I busted my XDA screen while go-karting on holiday and, following the advice posted above, successfully replaced the screen using an old broken XDA that had an intact screen. Worked like a charm! Only thing is you lose all your data, programs etc and you have to set up your device all over again.

Thanks again.

Hi...
I' new here but want to thanks everybody for the help.
I try to get the touchscreen for my XDA (QTEK 1010), from some sources, better in UK or Europe, but is very difficult.
PDAscreens Int'l site will be "open soon" for a long time. I try to send him some emails but always come rejected as invalid address :(
The link for the photos of "How to take appart the XDA" didn't work too. :(
I become very sad :(

MM5: you got a QTEK 1010, may be the same problem as I (touchscreen).
Did you opoen your PPC yet? Where did you get the touchscreen?
If I'm not wrong, you are from Portugal too... ;) We can talk by PM or msn or phone :D

Thanks and wait any reply....

hi, MMS. After you take ot the 4 screws, you have to pry or wedge the two halves of your MDA/XDA apart, using a thin knife or something similar. apart from being held by the screws, the two sides are "clipped" together by what I'd call "nose and hole" ... you know, its just like opening a TV remote control.

all the best,

mike
