Hi,

I was wondering if there is a camera available for the XDA? I'm currently developing an application for the XDA and my client wants to know if there is a camera available which can be connected to the XDA somehow. Now I've never came across such an accessoire but maybe someone knows more about this (is there one being developed etc)?

No, it will not work.....

The camera is using a sdio-Port, but the xda only has a SD-Port.
So no way to get it working....

I wonder why nobody has made a camera with a memory card interface instead of an IO interface? It couldn't do video, but could do photos.

Anybody tried the Nokia camera? That could be a useful option.

Just get a compact digital camera that supports SD cards. Much easier and quicker than IRTranP. Not many new cameras support this protocol as it proved to be too slow and unreliable and never took off.
Other than that, I don't think there's any other way attaching a camera without SDIO.
Connecting a camera for video is pretty much a no go because the serial and IR ports are just too slow. You probably couldn't use a SD based memory communication method as SD cards aren't designed for continuous read/write activity and would wear out pretty quickly. Although for stills this might be feasible.
Some of the proposed new PPC/PE devices have built in cameras, and look pretty interesting especially the Hitachi one (with a thumb keyboard too!)

As the link says, it's actaully the SPV camera jammed onto the XDA.
Now that looks like it means it's feasible to do a serial port camera, as the SPV has I beleive the same connector, although you'd need some software on the XDA to interface with it. I still doubt it would be fast enough for video.

It looks like the dutch aren't sure if it's a fake too, they found it on a chinese website.
One of them says he thinks it's possible that one of the smartphone drivers will run on Pocket PC.

Something different:
Wouldn't it be possible to build a camera that stores it's data on a SD "from the other end" while the SD is sitting in the XDAs slot? No SDOIO, but only a shared SD. Maybe the camera has to temporarily disconnect the SD from the XDA while writing, so it will only work for stills.

Nevertheless, if the serial is fast enough I like the idea more, because then recording to a relatively large and interchangable SD is better than recording to the limited 64MB internal RAM.

leonisto,
i am very curious if the image quality is acceptable. (Unfortunately, on the older nokia models, inbuild cameras are rather average at producing sharp images). Can u post a sample picture for us?

thx

i dont know about the phoneCAM's of today but i got this creative webcam which can disconnect and take pictures and it's crap
it use cmos tech and pictures are
1 over exposed
2 under exposed
3 have odd sinister colours

so i personaly would think 2th before spending too much on a cam which
were not a real digiCAM
