Only yesterday I wondered what I could do for this community, and today's already my chance !

I followed the instructions for mkrom, got Othman's Qtek ROM to modify, and got a working ROM image, pretty much first try. It is way cool, and does everything promised on the page. I created a self-extracting archive that runs adaptROM and then the "Programme A" thing, so people don't need to build it anymore, they can just download it and flash their device..

http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDA-developers-SER-v10.exe

(The machine I'm on can handle quite a bit of traffic, but there may be other reasons why mirrors wouldn't be bad...)

Should work on all existing PW10A and PW10B devices. Please note that installing on U.S. 900/1900 phones (PW10B) carries a warning on the page.

Happy downloading. It's cool. Back up your stuff and install the new ROM today!

Hi !

is there a way to include the .NET Compact Framework in your ROM?

How about SMS_Name, sms-fix?

Thanks for your work :-)

Hi !

I used Jeffs exe to install the ROM.

Everything worked fine, except the Auto-Configuration.
It pops up every time i boot my device and does nothing. I answered the questions and choose reboot, after the reboot there are no settings in connections and next time i connect to the gsm-net it asks again to do autoconfig.

I used the ROM on my german XDA32 with O2 (not loop).
Radio-Version: 4.16

am i doing something wrong or is it a bug?... Jabba

[...] I answered the questions and choose reboot, after the reboot there are no settings in connections and next time i connect to the gsm-net it asks again to do autoconfig. [...]

You should be able to just select 'Do not ask me this again' once, and that should be the end of it. I decided to leave the option to the user because I figured some people like being asked every time they switch SIMs. But maybe I should take it out on future versions.

Let me know if you can't make it go away by selecting the checkbox, and I'll look into it further.

One possible way to make the ROM image on Windows is to use CygWin. It's worked for me.

yes, the autoconfig goes away when i check the box, BUT i tried 3 times to let autoconfig do its job -> nothing. no configuration was done. finally i checked the box to make it go away. now i have to config the connections manually.

autoconfig does not work, it just says "you need to reboot" immediatly. and after reboot nothing changed. no config done. like i already said, i tried it 3 times.

am i the only one who is experiencing this?

a few questions:
- is the autoconfig dropdown empty? or does it contain a list of providers?

- dou you have an sd card? and a reader connected to your pc?
if so, can you write a rom image to sd, and save it to your pc disk
using xdarit,
and also use xdarit to write the NK.nbf (that can be found
in C:\Program Files\RUU\English) to sd, and then read
that sd image back to your pc, ( this is to convert the .nbf to .nb1
if you know how to use unix tools, you can also do this by
typing 'dd if=nk.nbf of=nk.nb1 bs=32 skip=8193' )

then compare those 2 .nb1 files.

they should be equal. if they are not, you should try to flash
your xda again, using the sd card you have now with the saved .nbf on it
that is more reliable than flashing using programme-A.

Thanks xda-developers AND the Jeff Summers who complied his ROM for US. Three PLAIN question

1) I'm happy that the 02 boot screen is gone but can I wool rather a non boot screen can your standard one be removed manually if not can you make this optional in the next version

2) Would I be able to reload the original ROM on the XDA i have to return to manufacture for servicing i two weeks

3)A minor Issue I i notice a square while mark in the top right corner appears sometimes is that know problem in the ROM.

Itsme: sorry i dont have a sd-card reader/writer. The dropdown menu is not empty, everything is there. i selected o2-germany.

btw: is the sms-fix in the rom too? sms-name i mean. is there any chance that there will be a german rom too?`
And there is one freeware tool written from a user at a german xda forum. it's an sms-char-counter (which is missing in PPC2002) it would be a good idea to add this too the ROM?!

the other guest: use the wallaby boot loader (reset with power-button pressed) to write your ce+boot to a sd card (this card will be overwritten completely!!) see the guide on this website.

itsme

the square mark is a very useful tool called 'switch', tap it, you will see.

you can download a rom that is official for your xda here (http://www.o2online.de/o2/business/datenloesungen/xda/downloads/index.html)

( that is assuming you are the person called 'guest' with the german o2 rom )

if you take a look at mkrom (http://xda-developers.com/mkrom) you will see how to modify the Special Edition rom to your needs.

Itsme: do i just have to change the dir-structure ? ie. program files -> programme etc???

Peter Poelman
08-06-2003, 09:35 PM
This 'Guest' stuff is beginning to get to me. At least provide some identification, please. 'Guest', are you sure Autoconfig does 'nothing', it may be that it has created the GPRS settings, which i all it should do, we removed all the other crap it used to do. If it created no GPRS settings for you, I'll check the 'Germany - O2' file to see what's up...

Itsme: sorry i logged in with my last reply but forget to enter the username at the top of the reply (now i know there was some login error, otherwise the username-textfield will not be displayed).... i hope that i'm "in" now :-)

in settings/connections there are no settings set for internet and work! "new" is the only item to select.

i tried that auto-config again, but still no settings...

sorry again for the "guest" stuff.

I was the Guest who mention the boot up after reset. I will be returning my XDA for services soon. Can i reload the original back with no problems? I had XDA 02 UK Radio Unit v31413 AND Radio Stack v4.

i notice the XDA developer SP Edition ROM Version date is 03/10/03 are we head of time??????

the boot up after soft rest (XDA developer bootup') i look at the instruction i have very little knowledge to follow the instruction (i'm a newbie). Any simple suggestion

itsme

it should be no problem to change your rom to a previous version
you can download the official o2 rom here (http://www.o2.co.uk/productsservices/xda/romupgrade/0,,170,00.html)

your radio stack was not modified by the special edition rom, so no need
to change it.

the date, mmm. not sure which of the digits is the month day or year.

I don't think I understand what you are trying to ask with your other question. ( or even if it is a question )

I just thought I'd post some good news...

I've loaded the XDA developers special ROM on my T-Mobile USA (900/1900) PPCPE, and it works great!

I used the pre-made ROM (thanks XDA developers, plus the chap that posted the ROM image).

I actually installed the latest AT&T ROM first (to get the latest radio), using adaptROM.exe (v.cool), then I installed the special ROM over the top.

It appears you can actually switch GSM bands 900 or 1900 using the 5.15 bootloader (calendar button), so there's no loss of functionality. I haven't tested 900 in this configuration, but when I switch, it no longer sees 1900, so I think it is working fine.

Jeff,

Thanks for packaging the update to run on Windows.

Since the upgrade my phone buttons no longer do anything.

Anybody else out there have the same problem / have any suggestions for a fix?

the phone software itself works fine through the GUI

Thanks

Thank for replying

About the your rom version I loaded yesterday the date appears 03/10/03 (3 November 2003 UK OR 10 February 2003 US. It’s not a problem at all , just want to confirm has any notice the ROM date

Important procedures before I return: the main reason for downgrading the original ROM v3.14.13 is to retain back the Boot up 02 LOGO after soft reset . I 'm returning my XDA this Friday for serving. I do not want to jeopardizes my warranty.. I assuming after downgrading to the original ROM version the Boot up 02 LOGO will appear back again.

I've noticed the same issue as arie, pie and server activesync don't appear to see the network connection (they won't make it connect, nor use an existing GPRS connection).
MSN messenger works fine though, so it looks like all of the network configuration is in order, just that pie & activesync in particular aren't seeing it.

I am using Jeff's "already compiled" image that was posted.

Anyone else apart from arie & I seeing this one? (or not)

Hi,
first it look great, but I have trouble connect to GPRS provider. I did connection settings, but ActiveSync or Internet Explorer don't start dialup dialog and when I dialup manually they don't want use it.
But when I try the same connection via vxUtil then it is working.

Just to confirm whether this new ROM be able to upgrade to a T-Mobile MDA, Model PW10A2 :

Rom Ver 3.13.12 GER
Rom Date 09/16/02
Radio Ver T310
Protocol 32S54

Do I need to upgrade the Radio Ver as well, which RSU Ver should I use??

Thanks for you advice and well done XDA-Developers #.....

Peter Poelman
09-06-2003, 08:44 PM
You don't need to upgrade the radio, as long as you're happy with the way it works now. XDA-developers Special Edition ROM installs to any HTC Pocket PC Phone Edition device.

Yep, afraid i have the same problem. Can send and recieve email but it just can't see the connection when i use PIE.

Peter Poelman
09-06-2003, 09:17 PM
There is a problem with at least some of the AutoConfig settings that are in the Special Edition ROM. For some reason it doesn't see the connections. Also: the issue with PIE not seeing the connection is real, and exists with us too.

These problems must have crept in at the last minute, because this was tested earlier on.

For now, please create your own GPRS settings, just like in the Qtek ROM (which had no on-board settings) while we work this out. Guess there will be a Special Edition ROM 1.1 soon (possibly based on the 3.17 O2 ROM).

lgingell
09-06-2003, 10:17 PM
Thanks for the update.

I guess there is no work-around for the PIE connection issue? I setup manual GPRS settings, but this would only work with MSN messenger, not PIE..

The rest of the ROM came out great.

cheers,

this is what we created adaptrom (http://xda-developers.com/adaptROM/) for.

just copy it to the directory created by the o2 install
( either 'c:\program files\ruu' or 'c:\program files\programme a' )
and run it there.

( if you type 'adaptrom -verbose' you can see what it does )

Hi!

I read in another forum, that welcome.exe (this training sequence at a coldreset) is doing more than just that cut&paste training. someone mentioned that welcome.exe is doing some configuration for internet-connection and is creating some files too.

Maybe thats the reason why autoconfig and the inet-connection isnt working in SER1.0 ?

Jabba

itsme
10-06-2003, 11:46 AM
this is what I found that welcome.exe does:
ImmDisableIME(0)
RegisterWindowMessage("SHWMappNotify")
ShowWindow("Taskbar", 0)
- make \My Documents\Templates\*.psi, *.psw, *.xlt, *.pxt ro_hidden
- for all in Comm\DefaultConnections, set ras some params
+ do more stuff to device.
- pass 'defaultconfig.xml' to configmanager.dll
- call method that does something with 'voicemail.lnk'
- SHSipPreference(6)
- load imgdecmp
- fload, coredll:2043
- SHSipPreference(2)
- ShowWindow(?, 1)
- TouchCalibrate
- ClockDll ...
- run 'clocknot.exe' at later time.
- deletelink

XDA Developers, you guys are directly responsible for saving me £15 for an XDA serial cable... I was able to cancel the order before they shipped :D

the new ROM is working great so thanks again. Also, one more thing. I noticed a program called SIM Tool Kit. When I try to run it nothing happens. Could you tell us what this program does?

Thanks again.

Itsme: uhm, i dont know what that means - i just relayed the info :-) Does your output mean that welcome is really doing something important?

btw how do i start to make my own ROM? installing my "base-ROM", then installing all apps step by step and logging the diffs after each install? and then alter the cfg files of mkrom with these reg- and file-diffs?

how can i make a diff of all filesystem/databases/registrysettings (without a sd-card-reader) ? any tools ?

being a PPC neophyte, I should have known better than to try this in an untested scenario, but the guy who did this with his T-Mobile bolstered my confidence.

I tried flashing my Siemen's SX56 with this special ROM, and it hung part way through. It gave me an error about having lost the connection and I could do nothing but dismiss the error which killed the flash program.

On my XDA screen, it said it was updating the ROM and would take 5 minutes, and it just hung there like that with no activity. After waiting for quite some time, I tried pressing the power button to see if that had any effect, which it had none. I eventually had to take the unit out of the cradle, and try a hard-reset, which just returns it to the updating ROM screen it was hung on before. It appears I'm now dead in the water.

Any help please on how I return to some workable configuration?

Thanks,

Clark

only way i know of fixing that problem clark is to run the flash program again and see if it will continue/re flash your rom(mine did, as my power when at 30% done)

I was lucky, hopfully you will be also:)

But I think your special ROM have a bug.
ActiveSync don't work via IR.
The XDA close connection immediately.

ROM updates looking reali popular, having a bit of trouble downloading it myself but i'll get there :? , just got one question...

'And there is one freeware tool written from a user at a german xda forum. it's an sms-char-counter '

where can I find this program?? Microsofts biggest mistake was undoubtly its lack of sms support- no sender name, no character counter and no export options.

Good job to the guys at xda developers and Jeff himself!!

Just wondering... where is the built-in File Explorer?

The link called 'File Explorer' in 'Programs' now links to 'Total Commander' (written by Christian Ghisler), which is far superior to the Windows explorer in every possible way. If you really must use the original file explorer, it's still in the Windows directory as 'fexplore.exe'.
