View Full Version : XDAunlock: Unlocking without serial cable
Peter Poelman

XDAunlock needs no serial cable (http://xda-developers.com/XDAunlock)
You can now use XDAunlock to remove the SIMlock from phones with the latest ROMs (Qtek or XDA-developers Special Edition ROM (http://xda-developers.com/SER)).
Users that install the Special Edition ROM do not need to download since XDAunlock is included and ran at cold-boot. Users of Qtek 3.16.52 ROM click here (http://xda-developers.com/XDAunlock).
Using XDAunlock you can also view the SIMlock code or re-lock your phone (using command-line arguments).
[I attached the EXE for easy downloading. Works on any 3.x ROM that has wmodem.exe]

i have recently downloaded the xdaunlock.exe and transfered it to my xda but an error occured.
the error message was: "error getting unlock code"
could this happen because i have the german version or where can i find a data which is working on my german xda.
Or is it enough only to change the language

It says on the page: XDAunlock only works if you upgrade to a ROM which also has the Wireless Modem feature. Presently, this is either the new O2 English ROM, the latest Qtek ROM, or our own XDA-developers ROM, of shich a new version is due out later today. Given the number of irritating issues some people are experiencing, you may want to wait for the new one, which will fix all these issues.

I've updated the Manipulator page to say that we no longer advise anyone to download The Manipulator unless they already have a serial cable and need to reset call counters or change IMEI on pre 4.20 phones.
Installing the Special Edition ROM is the preferred method for unlocking from now on. Sell your XDA serial cable company stocks today.

hi can I get help
my phone doesnt work
Great, I love detailed error reports.
Avri: I think the moderator of your forum has already contacted us. If you're the same person, you probably have 'no signal', right?
If so: did you mess with the 'GSM band' tool under 'Programs'? If you did, just set it 900/1800, possibly soft-reset your phone afterwards (stick the stylus in the big hole on the bottom left) and you should be fine. Let us know if that is not it, or if you're a different person altogether. But please, please, please, do not come back saying:
It still doesn't work. Please help.
Instead: provide detailed descriptions of why and how precisely "it doesn't work".

If the provider you're trying to connect to is on 1800, chances are things will not work. Major consensus narrative at this time is that at least the filtering for this phone is not set to a wide-enough range to make it a true tri-band phone, even if it might work in some sporadic cases.

WARNING THICKO ALERT!!. I am referring to myself here I have looked at the various postings on unlocking but cant seem to get my head round what is required to unlock my XDA. I have just received a second hand O2 locked 32MB XDA it came with two USB cradles and all the other stuff. Can anyone please tell me is there a simple way to have it unlocked without sending it off. There are many references to the unlocking progam on here but no direct link to it. I would like to be sure that the unlocking process is simple and relativley risk free can anyone offer any help maybe an already created ROM or whatever it is that is required? If the file is largish please send it to sean.oneill@skydsl.de this is my broadband email address and can accept large files.

*nix (or cygwin) is needed when you want to build your own rom, using our mkrom (http://xda-developers.com/mkrom/) tools.
you can find xdaunlock here (http://xda-developers.com/XDAunlock/). you will need a relatively new rom ( which includes wmodem.exe ) to run it. either 3.17 qtek, or our own Special edition ROM (http://xda-developers.com/SER/)

Now for another question. Can anyone suggest a suitable method of connecting to the net using my unlocked xda. I dont need to worry about phone costs (long story) so as long as the dial up is a UK one with no out of country prefixes I should be able to get online free?

This tactic is called FUD, or "Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt". Rebel has only posted three messages, in all three he tries to lure people to pay $100 to get their phones unlocked. To unlock your phone, simply backup the phone, download from the link below, run the exe and you're unlocked, and you have all sorts of nice extra software installed also.
Click here to download Special Edition ROM (http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDA-developers-SER-v12.exe)
Then, if you want to be on the leading edge, you can click below to go to the ROMkitchen and cook a ROM just the way you like it. None of this carries a high risk of wrecking your device. If you want to destroy your device, Radio Stack Upgrades are the preferred way of doing that, and if you want to spend $100 please give them to Amnesty or Unicef instead.

Hello Peter Poelman,
This is my 1st post to this wonderful forum. I read it everyday, but couldn't post useful replies as I 'm still a beginner in this arena.
I got my Qtek XDA with Rom 3.18.04 ENG and Radio 3.25.01. I believe this is the latest ROM for PPC 2002. I have to admit it's pretty stable and fast. So, my 2 simple qustions are:
1. Do I need to go for 4.00.xx and Radio 4.21 or not, and what I will gain.
2. Can I use the XDAUnlock tool safely with this ROM (it has wireless modem application).
Thanks in advance and for all of this wonderful effort.

Using GPRS, and especially staying connected all day, is much nicer on 4.x. And SMS sending has been ade much more comfortable also. For the rest it's pretty much the same thing, really.
2. Can I use the XDAUnlock tool safely with this ROM (it has wireless modem application).
Give it a shot, you don't risk anything except it maybe not working. Let us know if it does work, because then I just might add that ROM in the kitchen.

If you give me your email, I can send you the program xdaunlock that comes with the se rom, you can drag that to your xda and hopefully it should unlock from there. Worth a try?
thanks for your quick response
I'm not sure this is different to what I've already tried? I dropped 'XDAunlock.exe' into the xda and nothing happened, can't find it on xda programs nor did it kick in when I tried to turn phone on.

If you dragged the program to your xda it will be in the directory you dragged it to. So you havent actually managed to execute the xdaunlock program? I dont think it matters where you put it so drag to your root directory on xda, go to your file explorer, then tap the xdaunlock.exe and it should do the business.
thanks cruisin that seemed to do the trick my rookie status didn't have me looking for it in the explorer file

Hi folks,
I have upgraded to the XDA developers special edition 1.2 ROM on my XDA and all went fine.
However, when I put my own Orange Sim card into the device it said:
"Insert Sim card and enter pin" I entered my pin but it still came back with the same message?
My Sim card was already in there? So I asked around the office and a few people kindly lent me their own Orange sim cards so I could test it out with theirs.
From 5 differenet SIM cards, the XDA would only work with one of them??
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you get around it?
Thanks in advance.

09-10-2003, 04:10 PM
Yes, it is wierd.
I can't work it out.
The only straw I can possibly clutch is that the sim card it worked with was a relatively new one.
Any ideas anyone?

All the recent Orange phones (read ones with cameras, MMS facility etc.) use a java based sim which will not work in the XDA. If you are dedicated to the XDA, get Orange to swap your card for one for an older phone. The 6210/6310/6310i all work fine, as do the 82xx/83xx and anything older, 3310 etc. I have a 6310i with the original Orange sim and this drops in the XDA fine. My personal phone is a 7250 and this will not work. Never mind, just means all my calls get charged to the company!
jed100n
09-10-2003, 10:55 PM
Thanks for that Pete - thats an interesting call.
However this is quite a coincidence in the fact that the 1 out of 5 sims I tried came from a Nokia 7250?? The others wouldn't work at all.
I tried my girlfriends (7210) and mine as well (T68i) and none of these worked.
So it is almost like the opposite to what you said? The older ones don't work but the newer one (ie the 7250 sim) did?
Any help on this would be fantastic - appreciate your input already guys.

I'm about to get hold of an XDA II - will unlock it and put it on the Orange network (2 numbers on same device I like). Been looking around for a contract, and there is a new one some people might be interested in...
Rather than buying a contract with free disposable phone, how about Ģ70 for a PCMCIA card (Sony Ericsson GC75 Orange Mobile Office Card) that you can stick in to your laptop (share the SIM) - at Ģ25/100MB!!!!
No bad.

OLD Post:
So... bought a second XDA, as X-Mas present for my girfriend, its a "O2 Germany" 32MB Version with lock.
Now i got two crandles, a notebook with IR, a 32MB MMC, 128MB MMC, a second, unlocked 64MB O2 XDA, and "http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDA-developers-SER-v12.exe" :D
A lot of stuff, but how do I use it to unlock the 32MB XDA?
xdaunlock.exe didn't work for that phone.
So, and i just played around a bit:
Here is what i want to do:
1. Making a backup from the actual fone software,
I inserted the 128MB MMC, selected CE+BOOT, and started it.
2. installing special rom (http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDA-developers-SER-v12.exe)
3. unlock phone
Installed That, selected "unlock". Done.
4. Re-enter the backup
Just put the MMC in, pressed Reset, and now it starts.
Is this possible, and - if yes - how?
I've in the Bootloader, but i don't know what Flash Tool i shall choose, CE Rom to SD, Boot, CE+Boot, GSM Rom, CE+GSM...
And how do i get the Backup back to the phone?
A short advice, maybe via ICQ would be nice...
Thanks, Michael.
PS: I read the board at least an hour now, but i still have no clue...
I want to thank everybody here for providing that wonderful tool, for hacking the Soft, and making plans about Linux on the XDA :D
If i should make a Guide, including Images, just send me a mail.

I got a second hand Qtek 1010 with the following charateristic:

ROM Date: 10/01/02
Radio Version: T313
Protocol Version: 32S54

Please can somebody help me with this problem?
I've lost myself with all of these exchanged e-mails about unlocking , I'm new in this matter and I would like to know:
Does 'XDA I'=Qtek 1010?
Does O2=XDA II?
If a procedure that is OK for 'XDA II', is also applicable to my Qtek 1010?
Can I use xda2unlock.exe with my Qtek 1010 with the above charateristic? If not what to do?

Waldebrand, do the backup as described, backup ce to sd, once you have backed up your rom to the sd, DO NOT write any other data to the sd/mmc card because it is in a special format, you can test to see if it has indeed backed up, by placing the sd/mmc card in the xda, if it asks if you want to format the card it means that the backup is ok, just remove the card after saying no. When you have burned the developers rom, unlocked your xda and are happy that all is indeed unlocked correctly, (by using another providers sim) you will need to enter bootloader with the sd/mmc backup card in the xda, it will then ask you if you want to burn the backup to your xda, once this is complete you will have an unlocked xda with your original rom in place. Hope this helps.

Here come some more questions:
Can I use only xdaunlock.exe program even I saw that this only is applicable to a version of ROM higher than mine or I should follow the procedure that you described to Waldebrand just before by making a backup and restoring it later?
If yes why should I backup my Qtek if I am going to flashing it with the special developers rom?

I just went thru this entire thread on unlocking the XDA and I'm still confused. Let me ask some basic questions. I have a TMO XDA 1 that I'm selling. The buyer would like it unlocked. I'm with TMO using ROM4.01.00, RS6.24.01. I do not have a serial cable.
1. Does XDAunlock work with this software?
2. Do I need Manipulator software?
3. Do you need a serial cable or does the USB cable now work?
I do not want to go backwards and use the kitchen ROM stuff. This ROM & RS is far more stable than anything I've tried to date from the kitchen. I have a SD card reader/writer if need be.
Please advise & thanks. Craig

Also just to clarify, will this work with my ROM version (A.20.17 ENG), ROM date (05/15/03), Radio Version (A.20.10), Protocol version (324e4)? And also can I update using the USB cradle or do I need the "USB to PC" cable?
Thanks

The first probably is XDAunlock.exe: try running that on the device itself. If that doen't work, you could change ROMs to the SER (Special Edition ROM), which will clear the SIMlock using XDAunlock, which is included in it. You may want to save your old ROM first in case you don't like the Special Edition ROM.

Thanks Peter.
I assume my current ROM configuration is okay with this update?
How about the update connection? Can I use the USB cradle connection or a different cable that's just a USB to SX56 without the cradle?

What exactly did you do? You copied XDAunlock to the device and ran it?
If this is the case, there's really not that much that could go wrong: either it works or it doesn't, in which case the SIMlock stays on. Not being able to call with a SIM that used to work is not something I'm familiar with.
What ROM version is your SX-56?

The unit is unlocked and the telephone works. I could make calls and receive calls. I can even put in my other phones T-mobile sim card and that works fine. I just can't seem to connect to the internet. Maybe my setting are wrong for the internet connection. I don't know. Please advise
The ROM is now 3.17.03 ENG

Download xda manipulator and try that with a serial lead if you have one, failing that you can copy xdaunlock to your xda then explore to the xdaunlock file and tap to execute it, if neither of those work you might want to download the developers special edition rom which will automatically unlock your xda.

Peter,
Is the viewing of the code and locking back the XDA with XDAunlock possible only with certain models and versions of ROM? I unlocked my SX56 with AT&T and I never saw the code or I was given the option of locking back. The program made a statement that the device is SIM locked if I want to unlock it and later anytime I would activate the program it would say that the device is unlocked already. Can you clear this?
Thank you, John

Peter,
Can you be more specific and clear the information about being able to see the unlock code and have an option to relock the xda with XDAunlock program? I unlocked my SX56 with AT&T and PW10B1 using the Special Edition Rom but I did not see the code nor was given the option of relocking at will afterwards. What you write is it possible with certain models and Rom versions or any XDA.
Thanks, John

Are you referring to the autoconfig option on the xda with se rom. This is handy but isnt needed, you just manually enter the dialup numbers or gprs info yourself for internet/email access, this makes no difference to the unlocking, your phone will be unlocked for use with any provider on 900/1800.

You will need to burn the se rom to your phone, unlock, then burn your choice of WM2003. I dont know what you mean by "paste".
I thought to paste/send the SE ROM .exe application file from my harddisk to the wallaby via the IR port (in my ignorance ?!) and then run it. Am I wrong ?
Guess the PPC2003 ROM can be replaced by the SE ROM just like the PPC2002, but wanted to make sure that your evil counterparts at the ATT/Siemens/MS side had not included an XDA-developers lock-out in the PPC2003

What a great site!
After a little bit of trial and error I was able to unlock my T-Mobile XDA I.
I started out with:
ROM: 4.01.16 ENG
Radio: 6.25.02
Booloader: 5.22
After a ton of reading here is what I did:
1] Used OSImageTool to save current ROM to PC HDD
2] Used the Bootloader to save "CE+Boot to SD"
3] Downgraded Radio stack to 6.24
4] Used OSImageTool to copy SpeciaEdition1.2 ROM to SD Card
5] After cold-boot, bootloader prompted to load image from SD card
6] 1.2 ROM Prompted to unlock SIM, clicked YES
7] Used OSImageTool to put factory ROM on SD card
8] After cold-boot, bootloader prompted to load image from SD card
9] Upgraded Radio Stack back to 6.25.02
I inserted an AT&T SIM and was good to go!
I was a little concerned that the 5.22 bootloader wasn't going to want to install from an unsigned card ("Starting with bootloader 5.17... So they incorporated a feature called a 'Card Key'") , but it never seemed to be an issue.
Thanks again for all the useful info!

I've bought a O2 XDA and following the great instructions here have successfully replaced the operating system and radio stack thereby unlocking it to work with T-Mobile.
However when I turn the phone on from a hard reset it asks me to determine my network offering me T-Mobile USA or O2 UK, amongst other options. I want T-Mobile UK, but it doesn't give me that choice.
I then go into the phone tools area to sort out my network and my list of T-Mobile options are T-Mobile, T-Mobile NL, etc... no option for T-Mobile UK.
So the upshot of all this is that my phone can't find my network. Any advice?

tried with the 3 special roms, and all other from xda-developers ftp, always same error. switched to 2 other pc´s, same error. even with same version (3.16.50) occurs same problem.
anything known to solve this issue? thnx, br.

Looks like the problem comes from the Radio Version. Youu could try downgrading this. But in my opinion changing Radio VErsion is more risky than flashing the ROM....
Use therfore this Version:
http://www.romkitchen.de/tools/RSU_V4.21_PPC.zip
The same problem exists with Radi VErsion 6.25.02 for US device. You can read this here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wallaby_HT_Unlock2
But take care to not use any 6.xx Radio Version....

ok tried flashing your rom over my XDA o2, it had it already on but needed to flash it again.
Unfortunately my PC lost connection to the device as the "this will take 5mins to update" screen was on, there was no progress on the progress bar,now although i can get into the bootloader screen, it tries starting up but goes back to the "this will take 5mins to update" screen, i can not connect it to active sync to update, is there a work around for this or is my XDA screwed?
i noticed that when i removed the SD card, it sits on bootloader screen, would it be possible to add the files it needs to the SD card and get it to install that way?
Please help i need my phone for business use.

Try builduing the ROM as zipped NK.nbf (advanced users) and set in the Textfield the option PW10A1-ENG-3.16-011
Maybe this will help....

should be good.
I suggest that you use the Special ROm 1.2.
For flashing via SD you have to extract the EXE-File with Winzip....
