View Full Version : Announcing XDA-developers Special Edition ROM v1.1
Peter Poelman
12-06-2003, 10:20 PM
Version 1.1 of the Special Edition ROM (http://xda-developers.com/SER) is now out:
Fixed:
- Based on O2 3.17.03 ROM: annoying reply to SMS bug fixed
- Everyone can now use GPRS
- Pocket IE opens GPRS connection
- Serial ActiveSync now works
- Minor issues and cosmetics
New:
- Brand new version of dbView tool
- EzWAP2
- Our own band switch tool for US users, switch between all three bands
(no guarantee your hardware supports it, but at least you can now try)
This is now officially the coolest ROM for you, no matter where you live...
See the mkrom page (http://xda-developers.com/mkrom) for details on how to build this ROM (difficult), or wait for some kind soul to build the EXE, and just download and run it (easy).

Thanks a lot for your effort. I've really enjoyed the possibility to create my own ROM.
Is it possible to get a look on the source code of that welcome.exe app? So far it 's the only closed thing in your package.
thanks

Thanks to Andre, who was online during the announcement and who sent me a message, I must have broken some speed records:
Click here (http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDA-developers-SER-v11.exe) to download a new and tested version of Special Edition ROM v1.1. Simply run the exe and presto...
This version fixes most if not all of the problems some people had with the 1.0 release. Thanks to the XDA-developers for doing such cool work, and for making their instructions easy to follow...

We're glad you appreciate it. That's what we work for...

The source is online: http://xda-developers.com/mkrom/welcome101-src.zip . The source for the welcome in the previous ROM was available too. Look at the mkrom page (http://xda-developers.com/mkrom) for details...
Let us know if you come across cool tricks we could incorporate in our ROMs too.

Thanks again XDA Developers, and Jeff for being so 'quick' with his help!

Jeff you're like greased lightning!!! Well done to the boys and girls at xda-developers for this update, it seriously rocks!! MaxIreland and "guest" refered to a prog called sms-char-counter....
freeware tool written from a user at a german xda forum. it's an sms-char-counter
Any more genious people out there who know where to get this from?? I'll learn german if I have to! Maybe it would be a good addition to the next version of the ROM!!
Respect to you all at xda-developers.com

OK silly question...
I am here in the uk...
Last time i tried to flash my xda with the radio upgrade i lost all functions on the device and had to send it back to the service centre to be repaired...
If i run the exe that has beed kindly created is there any chance of screwing up my device again!...
I would be running via USB and the docking station that came with the decive!..
I want to do this but am a little worried after the last incident!...

thx for your great work.
is there any "diff" tool for ce, so that i know what ezwap2.5 or other programs (like an sms-counter) are installing exactly for using with mkrom?
if i got you right, then i need all files installed and all registry-entries?
is there any install-tracker on ce?

Two questions:
Is EzWap version 2.5 MMS or 2
When you say:
"- Everyone can now use GPRS"
What do you mean exactly by this ?
Because we have a serious problem with our local operator: they "upgraded" the GPRS system (by Erickson) last week, and since then, all GPRS on Pocket PC's stopped connecting. Is the new ROM the solution ?
is there a program on the new ROM which can open pdf files instead of acrobat reader?

SMS-Counter Software to include in ROM :-)
u'll find it here (german thread in forum):
http://www.ppc-welt-community.de/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21372&highlight=smscounter
Try it.... it sits as small programm in the taskbar naming "start" (because it's right over the start button).. it runs always... taking nearly no cpu-time. when u start to write a sms then it begins to count (like nokia).

Hi,
This caught my eye. If I understand you correctly, you're using the AT&T radio update on your TMo US device? Is this the one that Laz (from ATTWS) just released on the PPC Passions site? It allows for persistent GPRS connections? Sorry if this is a dumb question (i'm not super technical), but how did you do this? It's one of the things I'd really like if it's possible. I did a search of the forum here but couldn't quite find it.
Thanks!

I installed the ROM and my IE stops working on GPRS, it is not opening any page, GPRS is working please help
We explicitly tested this, and many people report it working fine. So I'd be curious to know lots of details. What cellular provider? Did you run Auto-config for that provider? (if applicable). What RSU version? Does it show the globe real quick and then do nothing, or does it time out with an error? Does it work if you open the connection manually?
To all others: is anyone still seeing this, or experiencing any other problems, with regard to Special Edition ROM v1.1 ?

I had this same problem on my T-Mobile unit but figured out for some reason that it requires the proxy server setup now. Once I added T-Mobile's proxy address it started working with no problems.

This ROM looks awesome. Since it is based on the 02 ROM, how does it compare to the ATTWS update?
According to this post on PocketPCPassion, the fixes in the ATTWS ROM includes the following:
List of AWS fixes in the SX56 update:
Here is a list that shows most if not all the enhancements in this new ROM load. There are a couple that were already in the last load but it is a pretty good list:
List of Software Upgrade Improvements
Microsoft Pocket PC
ServerSync: Scheduled ActiveSync fails after 24-36 hours
Name in contacts displayed vs phone number when receiving SMS messages
Dailing '00' gets command not supported error
ESP: No sounds when the dial buttons are tapped
MSN Messenger fails to connect if the proxy server entry is not configured to be of the type "SOCKS" on the device
Enter key does not submit HTML forms
Download of attachments is not working properly
Leaking interface entities caus gethostbyname to eventually return only 127.0.0.1
JPN: Inbox JIS encoded e-mail sometimes encoded as quoted-printable
.NET Compact Framework added to PAK
MIS through GPRS connection enhanced to allow frequent updates
Improved Pocket IE browsing
Siemens/HTC
Improved stability to both GSM and GPRS
SAT - SIM Application Toolkit support
NOM1 - Supports Network Operation Mode One as soon as switched on in Operator Network
Call waiting audio alert volume increased
Short ring tone volume increased
GPRS double attach bug fix - to avoid not needed traffic on network
Device doesn't end calls bug fix
"Unknown" displayed when incoming caller ID is blocked
Call forwarding fix - device reported failure even if call forwarding was properly set in the network
SAT HTC
GPRS attach indication
GPRS sustaining function - option to keep GPRS connection or end GPRS connection when device goes into powersave mode
AT&T Wireless
Reduction in size of Wireless Tools application
Resolution of periodic "web page not found" error with Pocket IE on first browsing attempt after a GPRS connection is established.
The nitty gritty specifics are not here but this should give you a pretty good idea.
The following statementis particularly intrguing:
.NET Compact Framework added to PAK
Does this mean that the .NET CF runtimes are loaded in ROM, avoiding the use of scarce RAM?
Does the O2 ROM have this as well, since it is listed under "Microsoft PocketPC" ?
Thx,
D2.
Hi,
When I run your program it unpacks the nbf file but comes back with an error saying it can not find the rom image file. Are other files required to create the new rom image?
Should I be loading the latest rom image 3.17.03 from 02 first.?
any help or direction would be appreciated.
Thanks

No, the whole beauty of the exe file is that you need nothing but it: just run it and you're done. It works here, and it works for a lot of other people. Could you maybe post some screenshots ?
Anyone else have similar problems?

Hi all.
Is it possible to include the "home zone" program in your ROM as well?
It comes with O2 germany roms and is shown in the navigation bar when the user is in his home area.
This applies only for those O2 customers who have the "genion" contract.

Silver

Hi Jeff,
I figured out what the problem was. It seems your exe was not unpacking
the files. Using winzip I was able to unpack and upgrade my unit.
However I do have another question. It seems this file was intended for use in Europe since I am in North America should I try to find a more
appropriate file version?
Thanks

The new ROM does not leave any traces behind when you go back to your original ROM, so the problem must be elsewhere, I guess...

and it bombed out with the message "Upgrading... It will take about 5 minutes." on my XDA screen. The PC put up an error message saying it couldn't communicate on the USB port and then the updater program closed. Now I'm simply stuck on the upgrading screen with a non-working unit. Nothing seems to do anything.
Assistance please!

I am experiencing the same thing (sort of)...
The key is whether you can still connect to activesync or not (I cannot)...
If so, you can still try the upgrade (use the 1.1 exe)...
Good Luck..

Nothing seems to do anything.
I was able to reload the base T-Mobile ROM from a SD card, then I loaded the AT&T ROM (for the radio stack) and then replaced with the Custom XDA-Developers ROM. That worked. Moving along smoothly now.

Thanks for adding a link to pdaPhoneHome in the XDA-Developers Pocket IE homepage! The link you have points to the fullscreen version of the site. You have the following link there now....
http://pdaphonehome.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=5
I'd suggest one of the following links for future updates...
http://pdaphonehome.com/phpBB2/viewforumpda.php?f=5 (pda version of what you link to now)
http://pdaphonehome.com/phpBB2/portalpda.php (pdaPhoneHome home page - pda Enabled)
or
http://pdaphonehome.com/phpBB2/pocketpcphonepda.php (XDA portal page... links to XDA News, FAQ, and Discussion forum... all formatted for pda so you can view or post... This is the one I'd suggest linking there as it gives the quickest link to information specific for the XDA)
Thanks... I just did the upgrade and so far, so good! Thanks for what you guys do! :D

I wanted to ask if there is any limitations on installing the Special Edition ROM on a QTEK 1010? I've been scouring around and haven't found any answer to my question. Truth be told, I don't even own an XDA or QTEK 1010 but I might be able to get my hands on one. Its a QTEK 1010 with ROM version 3.14.06 ENG simlocked to my local provider. I've gone through the features of your beautiful ROM and want to upgrade it as soon as I get it. Of course, I have had a very painful experience of flashing the ROM of my iPaq 3870 and having it die 30 minutes after I bought it and opened it. It took the local Compaq 1 month to replace it so I'm more careful now.
My question is, is there anything I should know that might potentially kill the Qtek if I install the Special Edition ROM? Are there any known limitations on the QTEK which would discourage me from running the ROM update? I'm a real newbie so I hope you guys will be patient.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Cyril
I own a Qtek P1010 which was bought at Dubai Duty Free while on transit there. It is not SIM locked, and I have flashed the device a few times now without serious issues. The first one was to upgrade from the original ROM (I forget which version) to the updated Qtek ROM posted on this site by Othman. The second was to flash the Special Edition ROM Ver 1, where I had some problems because it would Sync via Serial Cable or IR OR connect to GPRS, and I never carry the bulky USB cradle around. I had to get my office to fly the cradle to me so that I could re-flash the XDA. This time I used AdaptROM and flashed the latest O2 ROM and Radio Stack, both successfully.
Then I had the XDA special edition rom ver 1.1 installed. I found the program menu too full and cluttered for a normal user like me, so I flashed back to the O2 version and downloaded some of the freeware I found on the special edition rom.
My unit took all this pounding without a whimper. I dont think there is an issue with flashing the ROM provided you follow all the instructions and dont fool around with your PDA or the installation programme during the up/down grade. AND provided you dont have power interruptions during the process.
Cheers

Version 1.1 of the Special Edition ROM (http://xda-developers.com/SER) is now out:
New:
- Our own band switch tool for US users, switch between all three bands
(no guarantee your hardware supports it, but at least you can now try)
Has anybody tried out the bandswitch.exe program on an european Qtek1010 ?
I live in Belgium and I am going to the US in two months time. Would be great not to carry an additional 1900 GSM with me.
I am too afraid to do the Rom-upgrade but I don't really bother since all the apps that interest me are installed on my device. OK, in RAM only but they don't take so much space either.

Hi there,
I live in Germany and have a german xda ROM-Version 3.14.16.
Of course, I would like to update on your xda-developers specidal edition rom. But dont I loose than all German texts in my built-in applications?
Perhaps I could live with that if your ROM is really cool, but even worth:
Dont I loose the German keyboard and with that the ability to easily write
German texts?
Or is it possible to use a German ROM for update? If so, where can I the
German Version of 3.17?

Yes you would...

There's no german 3.17 yet, as far as I know. You could build your own ROM, based on an older german ROM, and try to incorporate the newer RIL parts that give you the wireless modem capability. You'd have to do some clever hacking though. You may want to wait for a german 3.17 to come out...

Great job! The upgrade went almost flawless...
Two things I noticed:
1. Byte counter doesn't work with gprs, I assume it's for WAP or something.
2. After upgrading and setting up my XDA with O2 Netherlands and GPRS (I configured this with the wizard on the ROM), I soon noticed strange problems. Initially pages loaded ok, but after some navigation I got errors or a frozen connection, although the settings seemed fine. I don't know why, but after using the O2 CD-ROM GPRS restore program, everything is working fine. Although the settings look the same, something has to be different under the hood.

I just installed the new rom on my QTEK 1010, and although it hasn't "died" I am having a annoying problem, I can no longer "explore" the device from activesync. I just seet "Pocket PC" and "Databases" under that. nothing else, can't copy CAB files to it etc.

We've seen this. It's a caching problem on the desktop Windows side. Close all open explorer windows, even if they do not point to your device, and try again.

If you can reproduce the situation before and after the problem, you can create a snapshot using the ssnap utility provided in the ROM, and compare the output.

My advice to you (hindsite baby) is to read through all the posts on the rom upgrade and tread lightly or you will find yourself in a pretty desperate situation (no able to use XDARite to create a card, etc.)...
I have seen a couple of responses to this question, so dig in and GOOD LUCK...!!!

We've seen this. It's a caching problem on the desktop Windows side. Close all open explorer windows, even if they do not point to your device, and try again.
Yep, that sorted it out thankx, now happily running the new ROM and planning to set up a linux box so I can modify it further.

I found a fix out there to square away my machine so it at least connects to activesync, but I am still getting GSM failures when I goto bootloader and also when I start up the updates, they all hang...
Does anybody have thoughts on this?? (I still cannot write with XDARite and I have seen others having this problem)...
Any help would be appreciated...

Last night I used Jeff's .exe to try the darn thing and everything went smoothly. No more tapping, pasting and cutting at last, what a relief!
And all the wonderful tools incorporated in rom. I especially like the switch tool and the jog-program.
Great job guys! :D 8)

You have a Qtek version, and you're trying to upgrade to O2. Just get Jeff's XDA-developers Special Edition ROM exe file (http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDA-developers-SER-v11.exe) and run it. It's a 3.17.03 with extras, and it will make you happy.
Alternatively, use our tool 'adaptROM' to burn any ROM into any device.

After updating to the XDA Developers update Iinstalled the original TTN2 version and upgraded it to version 2.22 and GPS driver version 2.05. Now Tomtom starts very slowly, the program runs slowly and I haven't been able to get a fix with the GPS.
Is there someone to help me as Tomtom is one of the most important things I use my XDA for.

I'm told the server I'm on was down this weekend for a necessary upgrade. The upgrade was supposed to be done by now, so probably they are still working like madmen to get it back up.
I'm working on an alternative download location. Since the Special Edition ROM is a rather popular download, this is not completely trivial: download of this file was taking 0.5 Mbit/s sustained over the course of the first days.
Expect to hear something later today.

Hey there, I tried making my own ROM last night and it worked like a charm, excellent work XDAdevs!
I have a couple of questions though, hopefully someone can assist.
I tried changing the standard O2-nl operator logo by putting an altered version of "ons20412.gif" in the ROM. This didn't work though, the standard logo still showed. I am able to overwrite the file manually now, which wasn't possible before. When I do this the new logo shows, even after a soft reset but I'd like to get it to work without this manual step. Anyone got an idea on how to fix this?
I also tried putting a different today theme in the ROM but when doing a cold boot, the theme is selected but does not show. When changing to a different theme and then changing back the theme does show. Anyone else encountered this problem?
Thanks in advance!

I tried changing the standard O2-nl operator logo[...]
We never really started playing with this. But I do have a kick-ass collection of operator logos sitting around here. They are a little smaller than the window available on the XDA, so I thought of adding a little 9, 18, or 19 for the band and maybe even the MCC/MNC in very small print. Geeky to the max! Please continue to experiment...
I also tried putting a different today theme in the ROM but when doing a cold boot, the theme is selected but does not show. When changing to a different theme and then changing back the theme does show. Anyone else encountered this problem?
Yes: we did! Drove us nuts. It turns out some files, for some reason, do not override copies in earlier XIP blocks, even though we think they should. "stwater.gif", one of these files, and related to the theme, is one of these. Look at how we solved in in the initobj, and you'll figure out how to put in your own.

Peter Poelman, thanks for the quick reply! I think I can fix the theme problem now. I'll definentely continue experimenting with the operator logo. If someone has any ideas on this subject please post to this thread or thread #334, thanks.

What's that "mynumber" stuff? Your e-mail account login should just contain your username as your mail server expects it. Usually that's either just the username or username@domain.

What exactly do you mean by unable to create a new pop service? Where does it fail, and with what error message? Did you re-create the GPRS connection?

To all others: is anyone still seeing this, or experiencing any other problems, with regard to Special Edition ROM v1.1 ?
I had this same problem on my T-Mobile unit but figured out for some reason that it requires the proxy server setup now. Once I added T-Mobile's proxy address it started working with no problems.
Hi,
I'm experiencing the same problem with PIE: very short globe in the upper right corner, but no page is displayed. Pocket Outlook works as designed and I used all the VxUtils to ping, port scan, finger etc., all with favourable results. I'm using O2 Netherlands.
So my questions:
- Any ideas on what can be wrong?
- Does anyone know a proxy server address for O2 Netherlands?

We use the v1.1 ROM on O2 Netherlands all the time without any problems. Are you sure you have GPRS provisioned for that SIM?
(Less silly than it sounds: we have a non-GPRS SIM here, and we keep getting confused when we insert it by mistake.)

That's not the problem: I'm using a new O2 SIM (and matching subscription :D ) which I received last Friday.
Also, like I said earlier, Pocket Outlook and the vxutils all work without a hitch.
I've tried ping-ing the websites I try to enter: no problem.
I've tried using the IP adresses instead of DNS names in the URL: still doesn't work.
Frankly, I have my hopes set on you, because of your earlier remark on having seen that problem before.
Do you think that using DigiNext's EZSetup would help?
Do they have some Voodoo inside their applet?

If the webserver internal reroutes to it's domain name it's correctly that you can't access this site.
to resolve this problem use pocket hosts
http://www.zimac.de/cestuff.htm
Quote:
Pocket Hosts allows you to edit the static host name to IP address mappings on a Pocket PC. This is the handheld equivalent of writing a HOSTS file on your desktop PC. Also includes versions for Handheld PC 2000 devices and X86 emulation environments!
Give it a try and let me know

It has something to do with these two needed files cmmapg and cmmapp getting replaced / overwritten. Running the welcome.exe replaces those files.

No, first the ROM, then the stack...
In case the modem doesn't unlock, do not upgrade to 4.21, but to 4.20 first, because that one I'm sure the ROM can unlock.
I have little time to test: Can people please confirm whether or not Manipulator and/or XDAunlock.exe can unlock RSU 4.21 phones ?

I just upgraded my 32 MB O2 xda with the SE ROM and it's working fine. I just have to call Starhub and ask for a manual configuration, and now GPRS works. Hi Folks,
I'm using your new ROM, it's great, except every few days my inbox refuses to connect.
If I go to my connections, they are all OK, and I can manually request a GPRS connection from there. Even with the connection set up in this way, my inbox refuses to use it issuing a 'trouble connecting...' error message.
Resetting the XDA does no good. The only way I've found to recover is an SD recover from when all was well - obviously highly inconvenient. :(
Any suggestions gratefully received.

I'd be interested in the differences between the good and the bad state. You can use the ssnap tool to create snapshots, and either send me the diffs or (if you trust me with the contents of your PPC :) the entire files...

What RSU version? Does it show the globe real quick and then do nothing, or does it time out with an error? Does it work if you open the connection manually?
To all others: is anyone still seeing this, or experiencing any other problems, with regard to Special Edition ROM v1.1 ? :)
