Tom Tom GPS without a car...alternative 12V supply!

Anyone tried running the Tom Tom Navigator GPS mouse by powering it from a small 9v or 12v battery....

e.g. "no car required" :D

Sounds feasable... just wondered if anyone had tried it....
might be fun on a mountain bike... audio only of course! :D

or for that matter walking around London....

the other day i found a site that had some kind of wind up charger which you could plug a 12v into. right away i was scheming a way to use it for the gps setup to use it outside the car. i'm still searching for the link to try and post it.

Nice idea, but its a kinetic "wind-up" (nop pun intended) device, the GPS mouse needs a constant 12V supply. As you might know the Tom-Tom GPS mouse takes a few minutes to "settle down" and locate the satellites, a temporary charging device like this wouldnt really be suitable.
Great little device though, especially for emergencies.

In theory all you'd need is a small 12VDC battery. Obviously the Amphere/Hour capacity/ and physical size of the battery would give you a longer operating time. Anyone happen to know the actual "running" current demand of the GPS Mouse?

It is a lot simpler/easier to use a bettery powerd GPS.

The GPS needs 5 volts. The 12 volt of the car supply is being transformed to 5 volts. Anyway I guess you need something like this: http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/batterypack1.asp

I use a 9 volt battery with a female car supply connector and this also works fine.
