First, I need to give a wagonload of Kudos to you guys and especially fellow countryman Jeff Summers for the ROM Kitchen. Easy for the laymen, but none the less powerful. Excellent, truly excellent.

The problem I have is not Developer-ROM-related. For a while now I have a persistent 'no signal' with my XDA phone. The last thing I remember having done is updated to radio stack 4.21. I didn't notice until quite a few days later. One SMS message has come through since, and that's all.
I have downgraded to 4.16 from O2 UK, and to another old one from T-Mobile. None of that worked, and in fact with the T-Mobile one my phone even refused to go on (with 4.21 at least it went on, though it had no signal).
This afternoon I went to a guy who totally took my XDA apart and said it was almost certainly no hardware problem. He even put it back together again. He advised me to install the Developers ROM. "You never know," he said. So I did. It's great, and I love the PDA part of my XDA so much now...but the phone still gets no signal.

What must I do? I am at my wits' end. I don't want to have it repaired by the O2/Telfort people because that'll mean I won't have it for a week or maybe longer...

Sorry for this rather long post.

I suggest you check your radio band from the boot loader followed by a hard reset. So backup your XDA before you get started.

Being a relative layman, how do I enter the bootloader and check the radio band?

Do a soft-reset while holding the power button then press the Calendar button. BTW to get out of/exit boot loader mode just do a regular soft reset.
