OK to find the version goto Start, Settings, System, Device Information.
As far as unlocking goes post the above info. then I'll make my
suggestion.

Installing the Special Edition ROM is the preferred method for unlocking.
Read the Threads:
http://xda-developers.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1190&highlight=announcing+xda+developers+special+editio n+rom+v1+1
http://xda-developers.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1611&highlight=special+rom+1+1

The XDA Developers special Edition ROM v1.2 can be found at:
http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDA-developers-SER-v12.exe
http://www.xs4all.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDA-developers-SER-v12.exe

I would first install the above ROM for unlocking then after it was unlocked I would build my own from the ROM Kitchen.

OK I see, well Windows XP Pro is what I've been using and haven't
had any problems with it doing upgrades! One thing I would do though is turn off suspend/power saver mode if you have it turned on.

Download xda manipulator to your pc. Plug in the serial cable with xda connected at the other end. Run manipulator. It will scan the serial ports and unlock your phone. Always works for me, running XP pro.
