I changed the seesion timeout for the forum from 1 to 10 hours. What this means is that if you leave the window open, it won't forget up to what point you've read messages as quickly.
Ofcourse what's really needed is a database to keep track of which exact messages have been read by which users, but that's not presently part of phpbb.
