View Full Version : XDA-developers get XDA II !

We got one! O2 sent us one of their demo models to test with. We figured they would have asked others if they were only interested in a superficial look, so we voided the warranty almost immediately. Here's our preliminary findings:

ooooo now that I do like the sounds of 8)

And here was me thinking O2 had no sense whatsoever... maybe I like this company after all

wtg O2 !!!

128mb eh? I think I know what I want from Santa LOL

wtg also to the developers... you have an official unofficial handset from O2 and officially they must have unofficially been reading your works

How unofficially official
EDIT: I just had a thought... sorry to be the first to bitch  but the SD slot at the top must make it more obvious? People might have the urge to fire it out the top (XDA has some firing range if done properly) or even worse....increase the chance of it getting pinched :o

Could you give some details on the connector?
Can I use my XDA cables and carkit?

As always: impressive stuff :D

About connections and accessories:

1- does it fit in the leathercase of the XDA I
2- does it fit in the craddle of the XDA I
3- does it fit with the charger of the XDA I
4- does it fit with the car charger of XDA I
5- is it the same stylus ? does the stylus of XDA I fit in the socket of XDA II ?
In other words, if we have extra accessories of the present XDA, can I use them with the new XDA II ?

Hi!

Concerning this part of the first review:
The other 16 MB of the disk-on-chip [...]

Does that mean, that this part of the ROM is fully user-accessible (reading&writing)?

In that case it would be very easy to change an XDA II to an MDA II (software-wise) by simply copying the files in that arey from on to another?

Is that true?

Greetings,
Olli

You can use any cable you have, but not the old cradle: the shape of the device is slightly different. I guess whether or not you can use your carkit depends on the form-factor.

The cradle that comes with it can charge a second battery (they are removeable now), and has a 2A power supply.

Yeah, these SD-card eject springs can be weapons-grade. But still the top is the only right place to have your wavelan or gps SDIO card stick out.

this 16MByte disk gets mounted as '\Extended_ROM'.

Correct.

Something tells me that any XDA II follow-up to the kitchen will no longer mess with the tiny bit of space in the 32MB main ROM, but will focus on this extended ROM disk instead. The life of a tweaker will be nicer and easier on the XDA II.

Thanx a lot for your work.

1- does it fit in the leathercase of the XDA I
Yes. You can just barely still use the volume slider in the down direction. the camera button is not useable, but then the camera is covered by the back of the case anyway.

2- does it fit in the craddle of the XDA I
No.

3- does it fit with the charger of the XDA I
Yes. The charger that comes with it is 2A, but can also charge a second battery in the cradle.

4- does it fit with the car charger of XDA I
Haven't tried, but see no reason why not.

5- is it the same stylus ? does the stylus of XDA I fit in the socket of XDA II ?
No, XDA II stylus is much thinner and slightly longer

Wonderful!! When will you be able to unlock it? :)
The unit we got appears to be unlocked. It may well be that they finally discovered that SIMlocking is immoral.

If they do start selling SIMlocked units, we'll see what happens. We've thought of a few ways one could make it harder to unlock, and at least in theory they could make it hard enough to deter people like us.

Thanks!
So we just have to wait for many little tweaks by the o2-developers. Then we -the users- simply have to install those to the ROM disk and voila! Thanks to HTC for that great opportunity!

So: Hurry up and build some tweaks :-)

Not such a intresting question but is the LCD the same size as the XDA as i have loads of screen protectors to fit the XDA.

It is 1 millimeter wider and half a millimeter higher. (And this while the entire device is narrower because the screen edges are smaller. Vierwable area is the same.

Nothing stops you from putting this ROM in the kitchen. Structure is the same, and conventional mkrom-family tools work. Hoever, the whole rationale behind the kitchen becomes thinner when you have 32 MB flash-disk and 128 MB RAM to play with.

I have a homemade carkit, with a connector with some functions like audio, microfoon, gps input/output and power.

is the connector pin layout still the same?

thank!

We haven't tested the audio pins yet. USB, power and serial are confirmed to be in the same spot, so I suspect audio will be too. (O2 also says XDA 1 accessories can be used).

Let's hope they fixed this silly serial-port power-down thing, and included a mute-control for the car audio. We'll do some tests soon.

Very curious: Who selling MDA II's already?

If they sell large number unlocked, we'll try. At some point, if and when we have time, we'll dig into this whole unlocking issue again. It could well be the people at HTC / TI-Berlin / ICT Nederland have made unlocking a little more challenging this time. No estimates on how big this job is, or how long it will take us.

Please, please do not buy an unlocked XDAII / MDAII thinking it can't be more than a few days before the XDA-developers will unlock it. (Sending us 100 locked XDAII's as a present would expedite the process).

Im an bit supprised by the review saying;
The device has 128MByte RAM, 32 MB flash ROM (internal to the Xscale CPU...) for the Operating System, and 32 MB on a "disk-on-chip".

Dissapointed also. (not by the xda reviewer of course) in an earlier review I saw that an o2 representative told PPCW that the core unit would have 128MByte RAM and 64 MB flash ROM..

read their text;
'Although the unit I previewed was only fitted with 128MB of RAM and 32MB of ROM, I was told by the representative of O2 that it will indeed be fitted with 128MB RAM plus a sizeable ROM at 64MB, the reason for this ROM upsizing is that they want to include more applications that will make the XDA II extremely useable out of the box."

Well, it does have 64 MB Flash ROM... 32 MB is memory mapped and lives inside the Xscale, the other 32MB is disk mapped, and lives in this disk-on-chip module. What's the problem?

So I decided to take the plunge and purchase an MDA II from T-Mobile on its Germany online site. The funny thing is I don't speak (or read) german at all. I went through the entire purchase process (credit card and everything), and apparently the order went through. I got the following message back, which I was hoping someone with good german skills out there could help me with. I don't need the full translation, but I just want to know whether my MDA II is on its way here to Miami. Am I just dreaming?

Thanks much in advance.

Fernando

hi!

your order reads as:

Ihre Addresse:

Miralles-Wilhelm Fernando
10813 NW 51 Lane 10813
D-33178 Miami-Florida

the "D" in the last line stands for Deutschland / Germany.
so maybe they only ship to germany. and as far as "Deutsche Telekom / T-Mobile Germany" is known for it flexibility i wouldn't count on that you will receive anything from them by mail order :( (not to forget that there is a T-Mobile USA that is meant to be your primary contact for that)

the price is stated in Euros (with german sales tax) and shipping is included. imho shipping is only included when sent to somewhere in germany (or maybe europe) but i can't imagine that they charge the same price for worldwide shipping.

just my thought. i hope for you that i'm wrong ;)

good luck

Hi Peter Poelman & all the other c00l people overhere :D

Haven't seen any posts by you in a while, so I hope you're too busy to post while trying to rewrite all the nice tools from XDA to XDA II ?

Please let us know if you're making any progress.

I wish. I'm real busy on the day job (of which may read more details soon...).

A lots of tools may not return for XDA-II, or they may return differently. The whole mkrom/ROMkitchen construct seems like a lot of work to maintain for not that much gain (using a few MB left over in ROM when you have plenty of built-in flash disk to play with).

But then there's all these other things we may end up doing: help people put Linux on it, possibly go after the modem some more (network monitor/debug info?) and who knows what else.

The thing I loved about the ROMKitchens wasn't that you could use a few leftover MB of ROM, but that you could make a ROM with all your favorite programs. Then, after each hard reset, you didn't have to reload these. Plus you can get rid of the junk you DON'T want to be there after a hard reset.

for notice:

you write in the articel that the irda-connection doesn´t longer share com1 with the serial port. But on a mda2 it still do it in this way.

I have connected the mda2 to my serial gpsmouse and i have to shut down irda to receive the gpsdata.

We haven't tested the audio pins yet. USB, power and serial are confirmed to be in the same spot, so I suspect audio will be too. (O2 also says XDA 1 accessories can be used).

Please confirm that the XDA 1 and XDA 2 connections are the same.

I emailed O2 and they said that NONE of the accessories I had for my XDA 1 would work with the XDA 2, which put me right off, as I have a keyboard and GPS system. Looking at the XDA2 headset in the O2 shop, it looked like a standard 3 contact stereo plug, not the 4 connection one as used on the XDA 1.

On a different note, one of the posts in this forum mentioned GPS SDIO.
That sounds cool, do they exist?

Cheers,
Muddy.

I got my QTEK2020 last week, because burglars took my 1010.(1010=XDA;2020=XDAII).
I had a GPSsystem with cable for XDA, but it doesn't seem to work with XDAII. I'm not able to get it to find my GPSmouse, not even with IrDA turned off. It does charge when plugged in.

So my guess is that not all pins in the connector are the same.

I'm already the fiftiest person to ask, but could you please confirm or deny?
