We are told that there are ROM routines in the xda 2 to use the camera as a barcode reader.

This implies that you point the camera at a label and it will output an ASCII string as a normal code reader would.

Is this someones dream?

If its true, its a fantastic plus but can anyone confirm and point to some data on this.

I too would be interested in this information but I don't see it being tue as I don't see that functionality being useful to most users of the device.

I know from looking around that there are apps that can recognise barcodes from images and I am sure that some and I am sure that somewhere there is one that runs on Pocket PC.

if you go to the www.myxda.com website you'll read in the demo, that yeah, you can convert your xda2 to a bar code reader, how?. simple, via the CF backpack, and then use a CF bar code reader. with the CF backback, you'll be able to convert your XDA2 in anything that uses CF or SD!

Think about it:

Radio FM
Bar code scanner
Gigabytes of Microdrives
etc

Hmmm... surely it wouldn't be too hard take a grabbed photo, and cut lines say at 5 degree increments around it looking for conformant barcodes.

Or is this patented already?

the cool thing, is that you get the 2 add-ons in the backpack (VGA & CF), the bad, It will problably be expensive.

for more pictures go to:

FCC document (https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=363453&native_or_pdf=pdf)

by the looks of the pics, I'm sure it will be no more bulky than the XDA 1 with the extended battery, problably George Mosquera could slim it down bit to make it even slimmer.

hmmm....this just got me thinking.....Imagine playing Warfare Inc. and Snailz or Worms on a BIG SCREEN TV!!!!!

w00t!!!!
