update
if you got an imate
its
Default_Imate.CAB
there are 2 files
0Splash1.005
0Splash2.004
if you run this cab, it will only edit the boot screens, so it turns into i-mate
i dont know how to edit these 2 files yet
they arent any format i know
hexedit read doesnt discover anything
any help here?
*** update
its a raw format

got a strange picture now :)
but he its working great :)
no hard reset needed or anything
still need to get the format right!
then we can all change our boot screen

When it extracts, it creates a files with a .nb extension i believe. I ran the CAB just for fun and cancelled it halfway through. Upon soft reboot, the top part of the "i-mate" logo was missing (as if just cut horizontally). Re-ran the cab, this time it worked fine.
Are these similar to the screens on the original XDA?

ladies and gentleman
You can now change your bootimages to your liking
*** link has been removed, the file is on page 2 ***
This prehistoric way will change
the boot pictures of your xda2
But it works
boot sequence has 2 pictures
1 will be at startup
and the next wil follow after 2 seconds
so you can make something nice :)
I included 2 working images, so you can test it you like.
Its supposed to be jennifer lopez and second image is matrix revolutions
step by step
------------
1. open a drawing program and maken 2 pictures
make sure they are saved in 320 height and 240
width. save them as normal BMP or JPG as you like
name them Splash1 and Splash2
2. acdsee 6.0 is required and easiest for this
open it and convert the pictures to
RSB RED STORM FILE FORMAT
setting for me where : use a specific resolution 64 megapixel
anti aliashing off
3. when its done rename the extensions to .NB
4.copy the cab file on your phone
and copy the Splash1.nb and Splash2.nb
in your windows folder
5.now run the CAB file
done
you can delete the 2 files Splash1.nc and Splash2.nc from your
windows map
basic
but works
**sometimes the image doesnt fit properly, i think the width must be adjusted.
will look into that later
;)

You can use WinCE CAB Manager (http://www.ocpsoftware.com/) to edit the CAB file to include the nb files.

i was very tired yesterday and it was getting late, so i finished it quickly so other could try.
that cab thing is good, ill try this weekend to make something more handy
the file displacement is maybe because the file has to be exactly as big as the original. try that this weekend to..

IMO, keep the cab how it is. If you make the .nb files inside the cab, you'd have to download a new cab file every time you wanted to change the image, etc. It'd be a lot harder for people to change the startup images, how it is now works good, if it would just delete the two files for us. :D

is your picture on the right place or displaced?
arebelspy
20-11-2003, 06:11 PM
displaced.. that's why i replaced it with matrix code, so you couldn't tell :D
then again maybe it was how you saved the images that made it displaced? i just hit save and did it as that filetype, didnt bother to check about the 64 megapixel anti aliasing off thing.

very nice app so far, thx
my images are also slightly displaced though, maybe 10 pixels to the right
akira
22-11-2003, 09:02 AM
palmop think its 30 pixels
try that
cut out 30 on the left and put it on the right side
e voila
a friend of mine is willing to make a appication where you just insert 2 pics and you can scale/edit/add txt to the pic and then save it to the 2 files splash1 and 2, and it would automatic cut the 30 pixels from right and place it to left
maybe he can make it direct uploadable with active sync
ill keep you updated
he will try it this weekend
On my XDA it is exactly 15 pixels, just tried it, works and looks great.
I used the method you described and cut of 15 px from the left side and pasted them to the right, while moving the rest of the image 15 px left.
Would be very nice if your app would do all the work in the future

i think the cab file is corrupt. I can't open it with WinCE Cab manager. (and when i run it, no changes occurs and the app hangs)
also, does the displacement rule apply here? if so, how many pixels should it be moved? i hear 15 or 30, which one is it?

Hi a newbie in this, just like to ask something about splash screen. Just upgraded to latest T-mobile ExtROM i wanna change the splash screen using the er2003edit but it keeps giving me the error "Error accessing image file" whats wrong??? The only way i wa taught in this forum is using the er2003 edit to access into the splash screen and overwrite the orginal. Or another way which till now i cannot locate the .CAB file is using the Win CE CAB manager rite? I am really tired seeing the "T-mobile, testing only" splash screen.....

why did you add a rootcertificate to the device in your bootimage changer? it has nothing to do with the bootsplash images. it is not nice to put rootcertificates on people's devices unknowingly.
I guess you have not looked at the files you used, and inadvertently included some provider's certificate?
and btw, the '16 pixels' to remove is a strange way of saying 'you have to remove the file header from the .nb file'.
looking at the header, it contains the following:
0000: 00000000 - ?
0004: 000000f0 - width
0008: 00000140 - height
000c: 00000000 - ?
0010: 00000005 - Red bits
0014: 00000006 - Green bits
0018: 00000005 - Blue bits
001c: 00000000 - ?

well i am not the techie here Itsme
I dont know anything about programming or headers etc.
i just found out a way to change the bootscreen. i think it works fine
and i found out when the xda2 was just a few months out (Nov 19, 2003), at that point there was no er2003edit or a xda2unlocker or whatever.
if you can do beter (wich i am sure you can)
make it so
no hard feelings..
btw. i did not program this, this is a normal bootimage changer CAB from a IMATE or Qtek rom update from before november 2003
it changed the boot image i noticed, i just looked what it did and changed a bit, i was happy when i found out the format the picture must be in

The images appear to be in a header-less 16bit 565 format. That is to say that the Red and Blue components occupy 5 bits each while the Green components occupy 6 bits each. I have written a quick & dirty Viewer in VB6 so far, with some minor anomalies. I'll take it home with me (I'm at work now *slaps wrists*) and work on saving files back to this format. Then maybe on to taking that .Cab apart to figure out which part of it changes the boot pics! Once that's done, it may be possible to rename it as a .exe and hurl together a quick CF.NET app to write the .nb files to \Windows and run the exe.

Gimme a chance :-P
I've been writing music! Orbiting - right-click & save target.. (http://download1.suxx.co.uk/hugh.hulme/madkat_-_Orbiting.mp3) <-- see?
Actual details of how these images are updated appears to be only for the SmartPhone (though if anyone has any good sources, I'd be interested?)
The image 'encoder' is complete - you load a jpeg/bitmap and save a .nb, in the correct format. The old method of removing 15 pixels from the left hand side simply led to the header being displayed as part of the image. I'll post the 'encoder' shortly, just to make it easier to get new images in.

Fixed - there's a pointless 1-byte header which does apparently nothing!
As previously said - you should have everything you need.. otherwise, try to find the VB6 Runtime Redistributable from Microsoft.
Save 240x320 bitmap/jpeg/gif from favourite image editor.
Load bitmap/jpeg/gif into nb Image Converter.
Save .nb file to disk.
Copy .nb file as Splash1.nb or Splash2.nb to device.
Double-click XDA2_bootimage_changer.CAB available elsewhere in this thread, which you will have previously copied Read-Only to your device.
Attachment deleted - see attachment further down this page for details!!

Windows XP Logo, little Progress Bar, in .nb format...
Note added 06/06/04: You will notice the "blue shift" in these images, as a result of the reversed byte order bug. However, it's so minor that you have to look pretty hard and almost certainly won't see it on the device's screen!

This will eliminate the "colour banding" and "spurious white bits" artifacts on some images.
I was wrong about there being a 1-byte header - I was just writing the bytes in the wrong order!!!

Great Job Madkat. Thank you very much as it's better to start the phone with something else than "Microsoft Pocket Pc" 8-).
Also I've noticed something : when you load a picture in you app and then you save without changing the name of the file, it'll overwrite the original picture. But it's minor.

Yes, possible with a few lines of code. I just have to get off my butt and do it. Actually last night I was resurrecting my cable box and wiring it to my PC, since my TV went *BANG*.. D'OH! If you select one of the file type options in the list (i.e. All Supported File Types) it should list *.bmp, *.jpg, *.gif, *.nb in the window. I wanted to make a default filename for the Save dialog to keep it simple, or you'll be forever typing filenames. I could just add an "All Files" option at the bottom..?

I could just add an "All Files" option at the bottom..?
It would be fine if you could add "*.*" in the field "Filename" when "All supported image types" is selected (see Screenshot).
Is this is possible :?:
madkat
11-06-2004, 07:38 AM
There is no need to type *.*
You could have said that it just doesn't list .nb files!
The software does not support *all* image types. Thus "All supported image types" should list only bmp, jpg, gif and nb. nb was initially omitted from this list (though there is the option to list only .nb files!)

Still puzzling over the bitmap saving.. though I did resolve the nonexistant file bug. I might resort to a slow save, similar to the .nb file saving.
I might also change it to round to the closest value instead of always rounding down after division.

No, just grab a copy of the app I wrote (it's on this page I think,) load the BMP file you want to convert and then save it to .nb format.
I never did sort .bmp saving, but it's not an operation-critical feature.

19-08-2004, 06:35 AM
nice app, you guys may also want to save or resize your photos / images to approximately 241 x 332. makes the photos centered and properly sized for the nb app.
this is my boot up image :D

19-08-2004, 09:27 AM
It only saves pixels 0 thru 239 horizontally and 0 thru 319 vertically - I've never had a problem using 240x320 bitmaps =) If you're using JPeg, that could be affecting the dimensions of the saved image?!

i took a screen shot of the nb app opened; i then pasted this on fotocanvas. cut and paste of the nb screen only, then pasted it as a new image. result is that the actual dimensions of the nb screen is 241 x 332.
say i have a pic i want to use as a boot up image; i then use fotocanvas to resize it to 241 x 332; there is minor distortion but it's hardly noticeable. i then use the nb app and presto; image for boot up is centered and there's no more need for any adjustments.

Shouldn't happen! I'll look into it later.

Solved - the image was being loaded in its entirety and saved properly, but the image box borders made it look a bit out.
If your original file is properly centered and is 240x320, your output file will be properly centered. It does not corrupt the output file - but by resizing the input, you'll cut off the right hand and bottom edges of your .nb file.
All I've done is remove the image box border and put a frame around it instead. The version I have here is old - so I'll do it again with the real code when I get home, and I might look at Bitmap saving too.
In short, you're trying to use the picture on the PC as a Preview of what it would look like on the device, which it isn't. It's just there so you know you've got the right picture - and to store the image data between load & save.
I might also try to convert it to .Net, but don't hold your breath. It would run faster, if it works, but you would need the .Net Framework installed on your PC.

Last time I tried to install a .Net app on a PC without .Net it took me to a huge long list of things to download and you have to have some technical skill to know which is the one to get! And then it's something like 26Mb!! I tried it as .Net and it wasn't any faster. Probably would be if I dumped the data into a Bitmap first instead of calling the conversion routine for every pixel to be read/written..

I would suggest that the XDA3/similar device has a different delivery system for integrating its images - if anyone would like to donate an XDA3 to akira or myself, I'm sure we could figure it out!
As for bitmaps - I would love to spend a couple of hours fixing it up, but I rarely have that sort of time available at work, which is where my development tools are. I'll get it sorted eventually - don't panic. IIRC the latest version does output the full 320x240 to the screen, so if you're really stuck you can always use Paint Shop Pro or similar to make a screenshot.
Edit: My mistake, I never released the latest latest version.. Please be patient - got heaps of work to do right now and, quite frankly, I'm a little worried about my current mental state!

OK peeps, NB Image Converter Web Edition Version 1 is now ONLINE (http://xsv.org.uk/ImageConverter/)
Only does conversion *to* NB currently, but you can choose your output resolution.
Choose your file, click "Get NB" and it will throw back at you a file with the same filename but with .nb appended. Enjoy!
Coming soon: NB to JPeg, Bitmap, maybe something else. Maybe also Source Rotation (90 degrees)

Hi guys,
tried to change the bootimages on my MDAII with the supplied cab files (imate, o2, xda2_changer CAB) ..
Used own nb Files created with that image converter ..
In the windows directory I can find the mentioned .nc files ..
But nothing changed, still got that ugly tmobile screen.
Any idea ? Is it a problem, that I deleted the Ext_ROM with DOCTool ?

Hi folks,
okay, now restored the ext rom, performed a hard reset to get a "virgin" PDA. Tried the XD2_bootimage_changer with some here supplied splash screens .. copied both the splash files and the cab to windows dir, start cab, softreset .. Nothing .. STILL T-COM splash ..
Using an MDAII with Tofclock WM6 ..
Please help ..

Hi,
finally I got it.
Seems, that the ext Rom of my MDA II is write protected as described here somewhere in the forum. So I modified the extROM with Windows Mobile 2003 ROM Editor (really easy cause it supports Splash-Screen BMP Load/Save function) an updated this. Isn't as easy as this simple software patch described here but works.

It depends on what you're thinking of....
WM6 splash is in fact a third splash in a boot sequence. It's simply welcomehead.96.png file.
As of two first splahes... I haven't found any way to do it yet - those splashes were installed in ExtROM - and we don't have it anymore ;)
I will be trying, though... I'm bored with my old ones, I've made them over a year ago ;)

Hi,
as described, I restored my ExtRom with DOC_Restore, took the T-Mobile 1.72 Update (http://xdazone.india372.server4you.de/apboard/thread.php?id=3373), extracted the ms_.nbf (ExtROM) , changed the splashes with "Windows Mobile 2003 ROM Editor" and updated the ExtROM. Works well.
I'm not sure if the t-mobile extrom could be used for other version of Himalaya than the MDA II.
