So first step in the kitchen :
remember the params for the 4.00.21 ?
old stuff
wincever=4
start1=81740000
size1=00040000
start2=81c00000
size2=00300000
startbmp=81ec0000
startop=81c00000
that was over 3.4M of free space
NOW @ 4.01.00:
wincever=4
start1=81740000
size1=00040000
start2=81c00000
size2=00300000
startbmp=81ec0000
startop=81c00000
that is IDENTICAL
so ... again some space to fit our little "must have" apps.

I've tried to set one up a couple of times to no avail. If someone wants to help me set one up I will host it at my expense. Let me know. I have all the 4.00.x ROMS and would like to make them all available.
BTW, I extracted the nk.nbf file from the exe so you don't have to change radio stacks.

UGH. I think I just blew up my T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone. I downloaded the 4.01.00 per this thread and tried installing. During the radio stack upgrade it said "upgrade failed". The windows app came up with a message that said that I could recover from it by removing the usb cable and resetting the device. The upgrade should then recover. It never recovers though - I get as far as "Welcome to T-Mobile Test Only Not For Sale", with the version information showing as:

Never makes it past that. I tried the hard reset button as well with no luck.
I realize that this is the risk I take, but can anybody help???
Thanks!

Not sure what you can do.
BE WARNED PEOPLE that an .exe install is the RISKIEST way to update your device. Do an SD card method instead.

valheru

Just open the .exe with winrar or winzip, then you just extract the .nb file or more if you wish. Anyone have a listing of the differences with this ROM?

THE RSU (Radio Stack Upgrade) is ONLY for US T-Mobile (900/1900) but you can upgrade all XDAs with the nk.nbf file written on an SD card.
the file is in
C:\Program Files\RUU\english
DO NOT USE AUTOMATIC UPGRADE ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A NON US VERSION

Startup,
You may need to set your ftp client to request 'PASSIVE' mode... especially if you are behind a firewall that is configured to block...
after you log in, and you get a prompt type:
QUOTE "PASV"
to tell the server to use passive mode.
If you are using a windows FTP Client, there is probalby a setting to tell it to use passive mode.
hope this helps!

I tried both of your suggestions and as before, it just hangs on the first command that is sent to the server. In previous cases it was ls -l now it is get <filename>. It responds saying it is executing my command but never comes back.

my card has never been erased on any of the Roms, and on 4.00.21 i hardley ever had to restart, unlike the other Rom verions...too early to see wuts up with this one, but everything seems smooth
RS 6.24 was horrible @ 1st, but for last few weeks i switched bak from ATT & it worked really well, i never had dropped or mised calls, reception everywhere outside my house was fine+ gprs was consistant, now with 6.24.01 gprs never drops, an i have better voice reception everywhere + more bars
the "setup up me email" was pretty lame, useless waste of space
and now u can finally turn off gprs with "flight mode" pretty corn-ball, but it works

I'm just another fool like all of us on here, uploading no matter what new crap onto my $400 phone. As long as it's new, it could be better, right?
The fact that T-Mobile won't release this one yet is giving me pause though... any ideas why they're hanging on to it? What's eating this version of 2003?
Also, I have to say, in T-Mobile's defence... they're trying to release a piece of Microsoft software. Not even Microsoft can do that on time and without significant bugs. How could anybody else. Kudos for them for even attempting it. After all, you already have a working device.

Is the phone connected to the craddle? If it is this is caused by a port call from the OS...checking for updates.
I also noticed that sometimes, GPRS sends a "ping"like signal to the devices that is sometimes perceived as a call and it lights up...

So far 4.00.11 is the best one for me. No SD card erasures, email works np, etc. Although I think the SD card erasures are related to leaving programs open that are linked to your sd card. When the device wakes up it clears the sd card. Also, closing a program ie explorer when it is pointed to your sd card is a problem too. Try pointing your progs to "my device" prior to closing or leaving for an extended period of time and you should not have any erasures. Just my .02.

Hmmmm, 4.00.16 and 4.01 have had no SD card erasures, email works fine in both, my light no longer pops on periodically for no reason, signal is much stronger than before, left programs on forever that point to my sd card.... All in all, 4.01 seems faster than 4.00.16. It has some interesting new toys, even though some are just new names for old things. I.e. Flight Mode=Power Off.

Can you name a few of the new items?
-Well, there is that "Flight Mode" bit for starters, I did notice that my PPC seems to run a bit slower when that is engaged also so I think it might lower the CPU speed to lessen the RF output and such.
-There's this Syncrologic thing that I haven't tried yet. Microsoft Reader comes pre-installed finally.... granted I never do use it yet.
-The memory manager seems to be more aggressive now and keeps my memory running properly for a change insted of having to go in and adjust things myself.
-Thave a wireless Ethernet option in the settings/connections window that lets me go in and configure my network adapters.
-I have a new ring tone.
-There is this T-Mobile My E-Mail thing for the Today Screen. (Additionally to the normal T-Mobile thing)
-The low Battery Warning event now is in the Sounds & Notifications and has "Display message on screen" as an option along with flash light and vibrate and play sound.
-One thing I'm not sure if this is the same in the older roms, but if you use Check Notifications and have sat any reminder alarms your notification events go through the roof! mine went from a normal 7 to 19 by adding just one. :evil:
-Outside of that, haven't had much time to see more. 8)

Syncrologic looks to be just a html file advertising a business connectivity suite.
Set up email is useful for about a day, then you'll want to go into setup and get it off of the Today screen. The email is much more useful now, you can configure the inbox to query the server on a schedule regardless of whether the PDA is on or off.
"Flight Mode" is nice in that it's more explicit in stating "Phone is off."
I'm hoping to see 4.01.00 in a Kitchen soon - there's a few other apps I'd like to squeeze into the ROM.

Everytime we do a cold or hot reset there is a signal sent to TMobile or AT&T( you can actually place yourself in the receiver list: HINT: in the registry) . So it is possible that they send some kind of SIM or SMS to check out the new radio stacks we are all using...
I just thought of something but it would not be cool for us users, but a killer app for the providers! :lol:

I've been using the new version 4.01.00 ENG, radio 6.24.01... a few observations:
The setup MyEmail option on the today screen goes away after you actually set it up(I did). And it's not bad, but a little slow in sending the notification SMS's. And t-mobile's servers seem a bit flakey.
Mine is also in need of an old priest and a young priest. It's always turning on for no aparent reason. I have noticed that it seems a little better when I let it turn itself off, as apposed to hitting the power button, but it'll still do it. Another thing to note... Before I did the upgrade, it was doing this as well. So it was happening to me under the original ROM/RADIO as well. Not sure about this one, but it is very annoying.
pIE rocks now(thanks WM2003)...
I can't disconnect the GPRS whenever I want to anymore(without soft-reset) the option just isn't available. I don't really care about this, especially with t-mobile's unlimited data package, but it's just kinda weird.
The whole thing seems to run faster.
Overall, I love it... By the way, I did the .exe upgrade, and worked great :)

Hold down the red phone button for approx 5 secs and it will shut down GPRS connection.
Anyone seen an update for the T-Mobile release date? Do you think the delay is caused by the auto power on issue that is being discussed here?

RoM Version: 1.03.00 UsA
ROM Date: 09/24/03

macudc, thanks for that, not sure how I missed that... :)
Nossie: The update to pIE was part of WM2003, not neccesarily this update. This is just the first time I've used WM2003 on this device. Before I just thought it was the t-mobile connection, but now I know that page high load times were also due to a crappy pIE.
As for what they actually updated, I don't have the changelog, but I'm sure you can find it...
Now, due in part to macudc's wisdom... My XDA is not constantly turning on all the time now. Anyone else notice a difference in the frequency of the auto-wakeup's when GPRS is on or off?

this indeed is weird ... when you've flashed the ROM ?
also the 4.01.00 is built in 10/27/03 so it's a month older than yours.
btw. ... how's the MMS working on it ? (they have a little proggie just for the MDA) :wink:

I've been using the new version 4.01.00 ENG, radio 6.24.01... a few observations:
I can't disconnect the GPRS whenever I want to anymore(without soft-reset) the option just isn't available. I don't really care about this, especially with t-mobile's unlimited data package, but it's just kinda weird.
Easy fix for this:
When you want to disconnect GPRS, press and hold the "Red" phone button (for lack of better words). After a few seconds it turns the GPRS off.

My MDA is working great apart from Mms and sms although Qman here tired to help me a lot.
As for the MDA mms program, all my German programs are over written by English programs so I do not have the mms program you are quoting.

I spoke with a T-mobile rep yesterday who said it should be availiable in the next 60 days. I also spoke with my Microsoft account rep who passed me a few more details (I've sent her a query as to whether I can share the information, hopefully more later) which I can't share completely at this point (It was about a radio issue of some sort which now appears to be solved), but hopefully will have permission to share shortly and gave me a statement which was somewhat more agressive than the T-mobile persons schedule. Nevertheless from both sides (Microsoft and T-mobile) I am now hearing very similar responses so it shouldn't be too awful long now before we see the official release of the upgrade.

something different happened to my device, its not exactly a SD Erase, but half (maybe more) of what was on my 64mb card is gone, and what is left doesnt work, anything that was installed by me, doesnt work any more, only files that were originally on the ROM work now.
...in check notifications i had about 90-95 events...and none of them were duplicates, b4 i was going to do a hard reset, i wanted to delete most of them an see how things run, but now i cant :mrgreen:

Just finished speaking with a contact who informs me that the latest 'problem' was with the radio stack, not communicating properly with nortel hardware. supposedly there is a cross-talk issue with the 6.24.01 stack which results in poor performance. They apparently have it fixed, clearing the way for a release... we'll see.

As much as that might be true, I'd still like to. Everything appears to be working, I get SMS and it says 'message sent' when I send one... but apparently that's just a warm & fuzzy illusion since nobody gets my messages.

intersting....(pass the pipe)... see ever since i even upgraded to WM2003 the whole "SMS Message sent" felt a lil off to me
but my device is not workin like yours, mine will say mssg could not be sent or sumthink to that affect; but in actuallity it does get sent, because, i'll get a responce.
but one thing i recently noticed is: wen im actively using a GPRS connection (loading web pages/downloading files etc etc) i wont get any of my mssgs (sms/ voicemail) till after im done loading wutever it is...im not to sure about missing calls while online, but i think it goes straight to VM, but i know on other instances, i WILL get a call threw

Well, this might explain some of the connection/echo issues I've been having since I've installed the newest update. Currently running 4.01.00 with RSU 6.24.01. Seems that people hear an echo of themselves when talking to me more than 50% of the time, yet I hear nothing. Kinda curious now. :)

No problem receiving calls when GPRS is active. Given that there's no obvious way to turn off GPRS (the intent is that it's "always on") one would hope that you could receive a call while surfing.
Of course, you can't surf while you're talking - the GPRS session suspends while the phone's off the hook.

Hmmm.... An interesting one this one. (Passes pipe back) I found I am the one hearing the echo usually and mostly to others with a PPcP.... I usually have to have them turn the volume down or I have to turn mine down if they hear an echo of me. (Easy fix is to use the hands free headset) The AT&T single earpiece one is great! :lol:

Upgraded my XDA to ROM 4.01.00, RS 6.24.01 from ROM 4.00.21, RS 6.24.00 without a hitch. Used the .exe to do this, had SD card as backup if upgrade failed.
Peformed some checks, everything ok. Installed half my usual programs - ok. GPRS speed still consistent with RS6.24.00 results (~40K-45Kbps).
Need new T2TDisk driver from PocketPcTechs though. Have 128M memory upgraded PDA. WM2003 handles these type drivers different than PPC2002 did.
TMO Internet still doesn't connect, VPN does.
So far SD card has not been erased.

WM 4.01.00
RS 6.24.01
CRAP. Things worked nicely for about 2 weeks, I had minor issues with echoes on phone calls, and occasional SMS messages not going through (even though I received the "message sent" notice). I was pretty happy and hoped the official release would fix these last two bugs. (which weren't present until 6.24.01.
Starting this weekend though it has all gone to CRAP. The device turns itself on randomly. Virtually every call will have echoes or just drop on me. Random reboots have started as well. With all the dropped calls today, I came so close to hurling it across the room just to watch it shatter.
CRAP. I as much as I love the PPC:PE, it is the worst PHONE I have ever used. As a techie, I am used to this and can handle this, but I would never recommend this device to any of my end users. The issues I have had with it would drive them nuts.

Hi...
Do you mean that we (non T-Mobile & non US users) could use this latest ROM by upgrading thru Wallaby/ SD card method? Could you please list the file names to use? Thanks a lot...

I have sucessfuly upgraded to 4.01 using the XDAtool by copying the single nk.nbf file to the XDA ROM. I did not change the radio parts and still use the 'original' O2 Radio stack version 4.21 (coming with the ROM 3.20). But I noticed in the Device Information, my Asian O2 xda is recognized as a 10B device i.e. 900/1900.
While the phone/ GPRS are working fine, I still want to have the ability to choose between GSM900 / 1800. Could someone please explain how to manage this problem?
Again I'd like to thank XDA Developers for all their hard works and also to other visitors who have made this forum is such a pleasant place to browse through..

MrDollyMaker, thanks a lot for your advise.
I tried to use the SD method.
Firstly, I tried to patch my Wallaby5.17 without any luck. Now, the problem got worse as the xda won't boot sucessfully. It stays on the white opening screen with the TMobile-test only message. As I mentioned, my radio part is gone. So, on the screen there was only the ROM version (4.01.00), then both the radio stack version and the other figure are blank.
What's the best way to solve this? Shall I try to use the bootloader fix? If yes, could you please additional advise?
THanks again.

I had a similar experience, the white openning screen staying on effect. What I did was I used the OSImageTool to re-write the 4.01.00 rom image to the SD card and rebooted through Wallaby 5.15 and it successfully booted. I am not sure, but you may have to use Wallaby 5.15 to do this.

Hi chad, thanks for the suggestion.
The thing is that I could not even patch the Wallaby 5.17 or downgrade to 5.15. I used both methods: osimage tool as well as xdarit to write to the SD card. It seemed that everything was running fine as I got the message that it was sucessfully writing "xxxxx" blocks. But then I got no response each time I inserted the SD card. I went further trying to use the psdwrite (my BIG mistake), I lost the whole harddisk in my laptop (yes, with all those important data). I can't think of anything right now... first lost the xda then now all those data in my hard disk.
It's been an expensive and really painful experience for me.
Nevertheless, I appreciate what this forum does for us. Esepcially, many nice people willing to share n sometimes help alot.
I was wondering if I could contact you and perhaps could ask you to write the wallaby patch/ 5.15 to my SD? I noticed you stay in Bangkok, perhaps I could give you a ring or you can email me at andhy@loxinfo.co.th. cheers...

I'm thinking that it won't make much of a difference, but I too have experienced the most latest greatest version turning to shizit after a week.
It seems as though I had the same problem with 4.0.16 but not positive since I had a few 3rd party apps installed.
Anywho... upgrade to new software, thing runs great for a while and then gets funky. What I found is that for a while it seems to run normal, till at some point it starts leaking memory. Now when I soft reset and watch the memory usage after running some apps and closing them, I never get anywhere near the original memory allocation again. This doesn't seem to happen for the first week or so, but after that memory starts filling up.
And no, it's not temp internet files, or new 3rd party apps, or the OS changing the memory allocation, or anything else. Identical usage of applications causes this thing to start happening after a week or two.
Sounds weird but since I don't run anything 3rd party, I can't figure out what else could be going on.

Yes, I noticed this too...... Along with the Notification Events filling up. (Yes I use Check Notifications and the auto-boot-fix for notifications too). Every day, new notifications show up as
Application....................................... ...........................Notify Type.....Event Status........Event Type............Arguments
\\/Notifications\NamedEvents\SCRIPT:0x000nnnn0.....CN T_TIME.......InActive..................NONE....... .....Cannot Process
Where "n" is some number or letter.
Currently I have been unseccessful in finding what Application(s) is(are) making this event entry in order to figure out how to remove it. If I go in manually and remove it out of the database, it immediatly goes back in...
I am certain this is some part of the memory leak as well as the slow down that eventually befalls the unit after about a week and other odd problems that some people report after about a week.
I'm currently at 57 Total Events. Once I reach 80 or more I start seeing odd problems that I have to hard reset to rid myself of them. I started with about 25 or 26.... I have added no new programs, nor removed any, nor changed any sittings.

The latest version of SPb Pocket Plus has a built-in fix for Duplicate Events bug (can be executed at startup). It seems to work better than others I've tried. In the last few weeks of heavy use, the number of problems has not gone up noticeably. Thery're all there, just not getting worse :-)
One thing driving me nuts is the "Deus ex Machina" bug, where XDA turns on by itself, with no apparent reason. It's not related to third-party software, since it still happens after hard reset. It's also not related to GPRS, since it happens with or without the SIM card in.

I have been as lucky as you are, as firstly I lost my important data backups two months ago due to HDDs crahses in my PC, then I was too busy to do any backup (stupidly thinking my notebook would not do funny things).

I have been as lucky as you are, as firstly I lost my important data backups two months ago due to HDDs crahses in my PC, then I was too busy to do any backup (stupidly thinking my notebook would not do funny things).
Secondly, I have not been able to fix my xda. Still trying to get a flashable GSM ROM image in the SD card (stuck in the notorious 1% screen of RSU upgrade).
I have been playing around with my xda since last Sept and this is the first time I encountered a serious problem ( I have put an eternal curse on TMobile ROMs :lol: )
Nevertheless, as you rightly said, this is a great forum with great people...
cheers.. and wish me luck!
Andhy: GOOD LUCK INDEED! ... what ever it's worth. I managed to get my XDA working only after my provider chaged the Radio ROM. It seems that the Radio ROM can only be re-flashed a certain number of times, the service centre here in Shanghai was babbling something about activating a password or something like that. They have not been very helpful, OTOH it's my own fault that I can not speak Chinese, although I doubt that I would have been very patient with them if I had understood them :lol:
After my XDA came back, I re-flashed it to a clean 4.00.11 ENG and 3.25 Qtek radio, that was so far the best combination for me here. My provider is China Mobile and everything is just fine with that combination, SMS, GPRS and all. Of course the XDA is not the strongest phone around :wink: but it's a lot of fun to have it, it also keeps impressing the laymen and layladies :D OTOH I prefer my Sony-Ericsson Z608 for serious phoning, got it just a week ago after I've lost my NOKIA on the black Friday, December 12th ... oh, I forgot to mention that besides screwing my XDA, writing to my MBR (PSDwrite!) I also managed to lose my NOKIA :twisted: well, tough things seldom come alone ...
One more time thanks to the Developers and all here on the forum, let's hope with our help it can remain free and fun!

I delete all the Tmobile stuff from the Start directory so that might be why I don't have that annoying backlight thing! (I also have the Flashman links deleted as I don't backup my address book and databases to ROM... I use outlook for that)
could you share with us, what Flashman is for? is it safe to delete it from Start Up menu?
if this is the solution, I might go back to 4.01.00
thanks

It's listed some place in the forums.... One of the flashman is for contacts list the other is for your appointments. IT is what automatically backs them up and restores them.

This is the first time I heard that there is a limit to re-flah the GSM ROM. Can anyone confirm this ..please?
I agree about the xda being impressive and I also like my Sony Ericsson T610 better for serious phoning...
I just managed to get a nother working xda to back up / copy the GSM ROM to my SD card. However, the patched Wallaby 5.17 did not show a GSM to SD "menu". Therefore, it was not possible to back up any GSM ROM thru 5.17. I believe almost all XDA distributed in Thailand are coming with 5.17 Wallaby :cry:
Funny thing, I just a new thread saying that it is not possible to flash write a radio/ GSM ROM. If this is true , it confirms your comment.
I wished XDA developer guys could comment on this ...

I've never experianced the SD erasure, but I've been using StorageTools by Softwinter.com. I set it with "Backup Fat" Enabled and default name (Storage Card).

You are correct, they are not in ROM. I believe these are the Outlook messages. They contain the messages and the attachements to the meessages in out outbound (not too sure about the attachments). I believe the number of files is related to the number of folders you have but I can't swear to that either. If you use email, you definitely need those files.

As are the speed dial table and message log (which are all writeable entities). I think the boot process must check for non-existance of RAM versions and copies a virgin copy out there if one doesn't exist.

Several of those files deal with the SMS system of your XDA as well as some of the phone functions and calls to the system. Without them, the XDA would not be able to transmit and recieve anything. I'm quite confident that they are not what is waking up the XDA.
I have them and mine still isn't waking up.... Strange. I'm trying to determine what is so I can duplicate it and suggest a fix.

Anyone has a clean 4.01.00 ENG ROM/IMAGE/ETC ?
Without the T-Mobile crap ?
BTW, is this the most cuncurent Windows Mobile 2003 version ?

I was wondering those of you who have been messing with the backlight issue, could you give us an update. Did removing the t-mobile files fix the backlight problem? I have downgraded from 4.01 but would like to go back if you have figured it out.

Also, what is the current 'TMobile Line' regarding a release of a WM 2003 version?
I haven't heard anything in a while... Anyone have any news about a true release version from TMobile?

looking at your signature i see u are with the ATT network have a question for u.
i cooked mine 4.00.05 at yorch and am having probs that it does not pick up a network easily when i look in the pref networks i see tons of other providers which dont make ne sense for me to have... butt he ptrob is when i softreset they come back even i had removed them... also the strength is low... presume because of the A version that i got from yorch. and when i try switch bands to go to 1900 wont let me (keeps showing an error message)
any suggestions to some other version i can get to workon the ATT network here.
was wondering if i get the 4.01.00 from tmobile if it will be any better for me

The extra settings make no difference. As long as the right carrier is available you are okay. Why would you want to switch bands? Going to another ROM may or may not make a difference. However, people have noticed that even though it APPEARS to be a lower signal, reception was actually better.

the reason why i am thinking on switching bands is because it takes a while for my sx56 to find network while on the orignal 3.17 it used to work ok, used to get a network almost immediatly. not sure if the pw10a1 issue from the cooked rom makes some diff here.
and also sometimes the dummy likes to hang on to TMOBILE for kicks and then when i select ATT in pref network picks up back with ATT
where did u get the 4.0.11 rom (if i may ask) and are u happy with it on the ATT network.

So you saying, the last version without bloatware crap is 4.00.11 ENG ?
And, the one million question, do have a location where i can find it ?
btw, if you wanted you can upload it to my ftp server,
located at ftp.weezer-dc.net @ port 1234 (important)
login with username "look"

Than just drop the files in the folder "upload"

Positive. Not sure where he gets his data from but 4.00.11 is real and is the latest non-bloatware ROM available. I have all of the ROMS from 3.17 on. Keep in mind that just because 4.01.00 is Tmob, you can disable these programs from running and therefore not take up RAM, just ROM. I don't believe 4.00.11 is available for download anymore since Jeff Summers site went belly up. If you are not cooking a ROM, I would go with 4.01.00.

I'd love to but I have a problem with just sending ROMs to people. Never know who you are really sending them to if you know what I mean. I was going to pay to host a kitchen outside of the US via a friend of mine but no one could/would help me with the code. I have all the kitchen files but I cannot get the kitchen to function on my own.

My ftp works perfect and already 5 roms online.
There is always someone on my warez ftp server,
so it is your internet connection/settings.
Please be sure you login with pocketpc and use as password xda (lowercase, this forum convert it to uppercase but it has to be lowercase)
The host or ip is ftp.weezer-dc.net or try 82.161.56.6
And use port 1234, if you use port 21 you entering my ftp server for hosting clients, and there you not gonna find warez :P
Hope you will be able to download the rom(s)
