View Full Version : New XDA-developer donations system introduced!

Donate to XDA-developers today (http://forum.xda-developers.com/donations.php)

This site is growing like crazy. All of us generate gigabytes of traffic per day, and we use a sustantial part of a rack-mounted server. It's not the most expensive thing in the world, but it has reached a point where I can no longer pretend it costs absolutely nothing to run. Looking at the not-so-distant future, we may need our own server, pay the going rate for our bandwidth and maybe even hire people for some freelance odd-jobs. I'd hate to see this great community suffer because it lacks some source of revenue.

Banner-ads, 'special XDA-developers offers' and a more commercial approach would be the obvious solution. Face it, our community is a commercial wet dream: Early adopters, buying lots of expensive gadgets, and then telling all our friends how cool they are. I'd really dislike going that route, I prefer an honest site, loving technology but free to publicly say something sucks when it does.

This brings us to the only reliable and independent source of funds: ... you. You can donate some money to help make sure this community can continue to grow and prosper. For every ten Euros (around USD 12.40) you donate, you'll get a small http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/stars/star.gif above your name with every forum posting. To avoid clutter, there's a bigger http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/stars/tenstar.gif for every ten. Can you think of better way to show off your wealth than to show you care about your community? Donating is easy, and you'll be done in about as much time as it takes you to read this whole page.

Check out our donations page to learn more (http://forum.xda-developers.com/donations.php)

'tenzin' from France donated 10 Euros, and promptly got a star. Check out how cool that looks on your postings:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=19889&highlight=#19889

I'll make a page that shows all donors in one spot later on.

Glad I can finally do something in return. Donating 50 Euros seems like a lot, but believe me it is only a fraction of the money I would have lost if this place didn't exist. I recovered one wrongly upgraded "XDA-brick" after reading postings on this forum, and my job is to write code for this device. If all I had was 'Source O2' I would have long gone insane.

I hope everyone donates a little to the cause, and you guys become insanely rich. Thank you for being around...

Peter

Hi developers ...

Great idea to keep this wonderful site up. I tried using Paypal but couldn't as my country is not listed. Is there any other way to donate ?

Bummer... Hold that thought though: I'll see if I can hook up a second payment service that covers more terrain later on.

Peter Poelman, why is it that I cannot give you a beer? ( the beerbutton is missing under your posts )

Peter Poelman, why is it that I cannot give you a beer? ( the beerbutton is missing under your posts )

This was fun to think up and write. Please use it a lot, because it will generate some money and help our site grow. As your bartender, I can't be drinking along. It's OK though: I don't drink in real life either. And trust me: I will get plenty of kicks watching a true micro-economy develop here.

Peter Poelman

But maybe I should change that, because more people are complaining, and people that do frequent bars are telling me that people do actually buy the bartender drinks...

when you are going to change it ??

The "marquee" scrolling banners with donors and beer transactions above each page have somehow disappeared (at least in my IE6). No clue, the HTML looks fine, and I haven't tinkered with it. I'm working on it (if anyone has a clue please let me know...).

So the banners will come back, and your donations are still most welcome.

I would like to donate as well but i can't do that by paypal. If you are interested i could do that by Western Union, so just drop me a PM with your details and i do that.

Keep the good work.

Would like to donate but my country isn't on the paypal options. Please advise when an alternative pay system is in place. Cheers.

same with me - the country I am living in (at least for now) is not listed at the PayPal. Will wait until some broader coverage money transfer system will be added to 'donations'

I don't have a landline and I can't get the page to accept my mobile number. I think I'm getting it wrong so could someone please tell me the format for country code and mobile number. The site has been very useful to me and I'd like to donate.

Great site from where I've learnt loads - have taken more than I've given - don't want it to be a commercial site - so it's great to give a little back. Keep up the good work !

Happy to throw in my $14 US. Great site. Thanks to all contributors of information ... and money, for that matter; this site deserves support if you have a few extra euros [or dollars, yen, lira etc.]. You've certainly helped me get more comfortable with my Hermes. :D

i'm extremely grateful for everyone here, but especially the site. I've learned some much about my devices, and other people. I normally donate to herald and Kaiser rom cooks, but I plan to donate more frequently (if and when I can) to XDA. I already donated today and earned my star next to my name. Suddenly feel like one now. Thanks XDA. I'm looking forward to seeing my name on the XDA's list of people who have donated..

Hi,

can you point out the motive that doesn't allow you to make the donation through PayPal?

PayPal you are subscribed to?

Hello.

I made a donation (50€) yesterday (20/09/08) but I forgot to do this:

"Note: When you're finished with your paypal transaction don't forget to click the "Return to merchants homepage" link on the final page. This is how we register the stars you recieve for your donation, so if you don't click that link you don't receive stars"

Can I receive stars now ? Can I see my name in XDA-Portal ?

Thanks in advance.

the donations for this site is to cover the servers Cost, bandwith and etc.. and the donations asked by members here are for there hardwork they have done for us, what do you think, cooking a rom is that easy?, making an SPL or HSPL is easy?, they too have real life

if you dnt wanna donate then dont, there are many other websites that provide Sim locking, no need of getting your temper high

Why u dont ask a quarter star or 1-point of star per 2 euros ? Just donate if u love to see this site live forever or contribute in other way & forget the star
Thanks and sorry. Just my humble advice :o

On the screen where you go to make a payment, it asks for your info like name, credit card number etc., there is a drop down where you choose your country. When I went to pay, the text was in a different language so I looked for USA and could not find it.

Hi Mods & Admins,
I have a complaint, I really do want to donate to this great forum. But I have a problem, I do not own a credit card. Why can't you just give us an address where we can't send a draft (and in turn get a shiny little star beside our name)?
Its just NOT fair

I've a problem here as I do not trust Paypal -- their support services & terms & conditions are cruddy.

Can send you an internet-derived document from www.paypalsucks.org

Can you not get funds via ordinary merchanting internet services? If I buy elsewhere, am not obliged to use Paypal but instead can use ordinary debit card.

Am willing to contribute.

No need to use credit card, you can donate by debit card so no problem!
In turn you get much more than a star!!!
You get all support, help, advice, apps, etc this great site is giving us all every day since long time, so star is not really important:eek:

pay the going rate for our bandwidth and maybe even hire people for some freelance odd-jobs.

I would love to help with a donation of money but I just can't right now. What I can offer is free service for the odd-jobs freelance work you may need. If my skills fit your needs consider the job done.

Please feel free to contact me via private message to see if we match up.
