View Full Version : Old tool: xda2unlock (now updated)
UPDATE: This tool has been superseded by a newer version. This new tool does not work for Radio version 1.05.12 (see below). The new tool works for 1.05.12A and later. For more information on the new tool see the new thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=6963&highlight=)
==============================================
This is old information. Only use this method for 1.05.12
Despite some set-backs and not precisely the easy tool we want (yet), we didn't want to hold this back.
We are proud to present the new unlock tool for the XDA II!
One of the prerequisites for using this tool is puting the XDA II in bootloader mode.
Unfortunately this will also mean a hard reset of the device: you will loose all current data!
So the advice is: MAKE A BACK-UP FIRST! (And test that it works).
Puting the device in bootloader mode requires pressing three buttons at once:
The Power button, the Action button (also called Navigation pad)
and the Reset button in a hole at the bottom with the stylus.
When you run this tool on your PC, it will run in a DOS box and extract the unlock code from the device.
It will probably not work on Windows 98, but it does on Windows 2000 and XP.
This tool was tested with Radio version 1.06.x. It might not work on Radio version 1.10.x!
It won't unlock the device for you. You can do it through the standard interface.
When you run it, it looks like this:
XDA Developers XDA2UNLOCK tool
This program will extract the unlock code from your XDA II.
For this to be possible, a few steps are necessary:
1. The XDA II needs to be put in bootloader mode.
NOTE: THIS WILL WIPE ALL YOUR DATA SO FIRST BACK-UP!
You enter the bootloader by holding the Power button and the Action button
while pressing the stylus in the reset hole on the bottom.
In the bootloader mode, the display will be gray and say Serial at the top.
2. Next put the device in the USB cradle. The display will now say USB
and the first time Windows will detect a new device.
3. Disable USB in Active Sync in 'File -> Connection Settings'
Now the device is ready to extract the unlock code.
Type YES when you have completed the above steps and want to continue: YES
Communication port opened.
waiting for radio bootloader
reading first block...
reading second block...
Unlock code: 2040248
When you insert a blocked SIM in your XDA2,
you can enter the above code in the SIMLock box.
Alternatively, you can connect to the wireless modem
and enter the following AT command:
AT%HTCLOCK=0,2040248,1
Do not forget to enable USB in Active Sync again!

working on that one. seems to be protected rather good. I suspect that unprotecting it will involve reformatting the partitions. and then reloading them with data.

I am new here, so don't know any technical terms...
When I made a hard reset, then finally the display was not described as below.
"In the bootloader mode, the display will be gray and say Serial at the top."
The display finally stopped and showed a message in the middle of screen, "Tap the screen to set up your Procket PC.", and there was a logo of Microsoft Windowns Procket PC.
Please Kindly tell me what I did wrong....

I eventually got through to a great guy Tony Gilfoyle who knows a lot and is very helpfull. He is worth talking to if you have any problems. He also unblocked a phone for me in one day.

is there a way to lock it back to o2 so theyre none the wiser ?
Yes, you can put the XDA in Wireless Modem mode (application in Programs) and then connect to it with a terminal program like Hyperterminal. When you get feedback from the AT commands (for example ATZ) you can enter the following:
AT%HTCLOCK=1,12345678,1
Where 12345678 can be replaced by your unlock code.

Hi there!
Have read the threads with great interest having just acquired one of the XDA2 machines. I must say that I was in somewhat of a moral dilemma as to whether I should have my machine unlocked.
The reason being you see is that I work for the O2 company and therefore am aware that officially we do not unlock these devices as they are the O2 brands flagship product and we are of course hesitant about letting any other network get their grubby little paws on revenue that rightfully should belong to us.
Having said that of course, when I found out that it would cost nearly 200 pounds to transfer my nice easy number from Vodafone (yes I know....why dont I have an O2 number if I am extolling their virtues?...good question...but that would be an ecumenical matter...lol) I promptly forgot about the ethical high ground and took a quick saunter down the hill to the lower moral suburbs and quickly downloaded this fine piece of software and said a quick blessing for the gifted people who created it.
Many thanks guys and keep up the good work.

Lets talk about the morality of O2 shall we, I bought 2 contract sims from their online service, the selling point being the ability to access the bill on the web, at any time I was supposed to be able to see how much of a bill was being run up, this was important to me as one sim was for my 13 year old granddaughter. To cut a long story short, I was never able to access the account, I sent numerous emails which took weeks to get an automatic response that did not address the problem, I paid O2 in excess of £1000 in a matter of months without once seeing a bill, I then asked that the service be terminated because of their inability to supply the service they were selling. This was refused by a very bolshie female, eventually I got through to a manager at 50p a minute, he terminated the contract, I then got a final bill which I refused to pay in the absence of any itemisation, something I had never had, they put the debt collecters on my case, after many long and fruitless phone calls to the debt agency they referred it back to O2 as they were not aware that it was a disputed bill. I have no way to contact O2 except online but I have no reference or membership because they have blacklisted my name and address. My granddaughter saved up Mars chocolate wrappers in a promotion between Mars and O2, she registered them onsite giving my address, guess what, they took her wrappers and sent nothing as her application for O2 payg sim services were "not acceptable" owing to a credit search. O2 are in my opinion a bunch of faceless robbers that hide behind credit agencies and premium rate lines. This is the same O2 that were allowing people to register stolen credit cards to topup and refused to close the loophole even when aware of it, they had to make thousands of refunds to innocent cardholders, was their any apology, you have to be joking, the refunds were not given automatically, the cardholder had to apply to get their money back. Happy new year O2, hope you choke on your ill gotten profits.

This is great everyone! The only problem I was having with my XDAII was O2 :P Does this unlock system work with dual sim cards? If so can you be connected to both phone lines (and networks) at once?
cruisin-thru
05-01-2004, 10:23 PM
The dual sim can only use one line, I think you have to switch off radio then switch back on to switch between the 2 sims. The unlock is not affected by the dual sim and will unlock as usual.

07-01-2004, 07:31 PM
in reply to cruisin........What can I say...you have in a nut shell summed up the very sentiments of guys like me who are not faceless and have to try to assist customers like yourself when they come in to see us at the high street stores and what can we do about their concerns?....bupkiss thats what! Some gifted idiot in the upper echelons of the company decided it would be a great idea to seperate O2 retail (us at the high street stores) from O2 online (those faceless robbers who do indeed hide behing credit agencies and premium rate lines) and still call it O2 as if they are anything to do with us lot in the stores. The real kicker is that even we only have the premium rate number we can call to try to sort out any problems and we still have to wait in line. Trust me.....even we have difficulty in swallowing this as it is us poor sods who tend to get the shitty end as we are the human face to this company :x . On behalf of us retail monkeys I would just like to say that we may not be perfect either but at least you can come and give the guy who sold it you a hard time until its sorted. Some days the motto for O2 online should be "caveat emptor" (buyer beware for those not inclined toward latin)
I only hope you are with a better airtime provider now and anyone else reading this......come and see us instore and speak to a human. You may still have to wait but at least we wont bore you with music and insincere apologies every forty seconds :) .

Nope, definately cannot see either on mine.
This is definately in My Device\Windows\Startup ???
I used Remove Programs to get rid of the two O2 applications,
and then used File Explorer to get rid of the V2R directory.
This works fine so long as the battery isnt removed or goes DEAD flat.
If it does, the unit restarts from scratch and loads all the O2 stuff back :-(
Bit of a pain, but I suppose I can live with it.

Thanks for the unlock method it worked perfectly. However after I did it and inserted the non o2 card and it asked for an unlock code,
I thought I would see what happens when I swap sims in and out.
So:
I removed the Orange Sim and put in the o2 sim= NO PROBLEM
I removed the o2 sim and pit in the Orange sim=NO PROBLEM
I removed the Orange sim and put in the o2 sim= HARD RESET
Was this a freak error or did I do this somehow? or should I do a full backup each time before changeing sims?

Ok, can you run the program from a separate command box? Go to startup -> Run and type cmd.exe. Then in the black box go to the directory where you saved the program. For example cd c:\temp Or make it easy and save the progam in C:\. Then type xda2unlock. Now maybe there is some more information as the window doesn't close.

Hello
I have problems when i would unlocking my XDA2. I becomes no unlocking code.
Can you help me??
We can always try, but an explanation of what actually is happening would help. What version of windows on your PC, what version of PocketPC, radio software? Is there an error message? Try to run xda2unlock.exe from a command prompt (cmd.exe).
Did you read the whole thread and tried solutions/problems others encountered?
matrix
19-02-2004, 11:40 AM
Yes i read the other problems.
But my problem is i becomes no unlock code.
When i start the Software comes:
Communication port opened.
waiting for radio bootloader
reading first block...
reading second block...
The phone seems unlocked already!
Thats all.
I have a XDA2 02 brand one locked. ROM 1.60.00Ger
Can you help me now.
Thanks for yours strive in advance.
Are you sure it is locked? Have you tested this with another SIM?
Maybe it is a different lock as this tool only gets the code for the network lock. Maybe we could see if it is another lock.
Do you know the specific radio version? You can find it under settings -> system -> Device information.
Also you could try and collect the information as specified in:

Ok, this might be a newer Radio version that changed something.

I'm not sure what you mean here, but it could be usefull if you could read the thread in the previous message. Can you try the AT commands?
Another possibility is write the GSM rom to an SD card, but that is a bit involved. Also to get it off the SD card I'm not sure what tools you can use. To write it to the SD card you can do this from the bootloader. Go in the bootloader with a terminal program and issue the d2s command:
d2s 60000000 00300000
SD:Waiting for card insert.........

If you can do this get in touch with me to get the data off of the SD card.
I can image this is a bit involved, but otherwise I can not help. It might be they improved the Radio rom against reading the unlock code.

I have just used the Unlock tool for the XDAII (great job guys) and it works a treat but when I put my T-mobile card in it I can't make any calls, it says call ended within seconds after dialing. I have tried both GSM & GPRS. In fact I can't even find the page to change these settings (if there is one) as I assume there are set as O2 by default. Am I missing something, I'm new to the XDAII and not too technical and I only got it today so would appriciate any reply given in full detail.
Cheers
P.S
setting up a Paypal account tommorrow then the drinks are on me!!!

IT might be dropping calls because of low signal level, there are no settings for that, have you tried it in a different location, my phone on O2 drops out all the time in my local pub but works great elsewhere.

OK It's definatly not the reception and it definatly isn't a problem with the chip , It just doesn't seem to work and when I call the number it doesn't go to voicemail but says "calls are not currently being connected......." etc. Man I feel crap, the only reason I got this phone was because I thought I could unlock it. Has anyone else used T-mobile and had any problems or succsess???

Have you tried another sim to see if it displays the same behaviour. Have you managed to connect a call? Have you ever seen it working, it sounds like a blocked phone to me. Also place your sim in another phone and see if it works there for incoming calls

My T-mobile sim definatly works in my other phone, I tried my friends T-mobile sim in the XDAII and it doesn't work either. I don't think the phone can be blocked as I bought an O2 pay as u go sim and it works fine, receiving and sending calls etc. Is it possible for a phone to be blocked to certain networks and not others???

Hi, what is your radio version?
Else maybe you could retrieve info according to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=4095
Maybe that can tell us. But it sounds quite peculiar.

I am using my T Mobile SIM since Months in my XDA2 and never had any problems. I also have the GPRS Settings and am able to access the Internet. I have notived that the T-Mobile GPRS Speed is a lot faster than O2, maybe because hardly anyone uses GPRS on T-Mobile.
And by the way, GSM is the Frequency/Network used for the Voice calls and GPRS is responsible for your Internet Connection via the GSM Network.
I rarely used to get also the message from T-Mobile 'calls are currently not connected to this number' when using ANY Handset. That is actually a 'feature' by T-Mobile when their lines are very busy. This does tend to happen (luckily not too often anymore) when you are trying to get through to a specific number usually.
If you are still experiencing the T-Mobile problems, what I would suggest is try another Network SIM (perhaps Orange from a mate) in your XDA2 and see if the phone really is unlocked properly. Alternatively carry out a Hardreset (Hold down Power Button and use the stylus to do the usual reset; make sure you backup before as ALL data on the main device will be wiped!) and before installing any applications at all, use your T-Mobile SIM.
All the best.

I've goten this to work as well on o2 xda II, however with slightly different steps
Mu issue was that after doing hard reset and placsing in cradle, ActiveSync couldn't find my xda II. SO I used following steps:
FORGET THIS NEXT BIT - "The display will now say USB
and the first time Windows will detect a new device. " - IT STILL WORKS IF YOU IGNORE THIS STEP (in "")
3. Disable USB in Active Sync in 'File -> Connection Settings'
4. run xda2unlock.exe
;) -thanks a lot guys !!
cheers

This looks like a great unlock method thanks to the xda developers. I have a question. As I previewed the instructions it would have me load the XDA Rom Special 3.17.
I have seen discussion that the Siemens pc2003 upgrade will fail due to the rom unmatch. Is that true?
Do I attempt to upgrade pc2003 first and then load the 3.17. But that would move me to an earlier rom version, owuld it not?
Do I load the 3.17 special rom , unlock my sim and then reload my A.21.02 that the upgrade expects?

I have the O2 version.
When I tried it as instructed after I run the programme it stops (finishes) but the pda screen still showed black as in SIDS post. I removed it from the cradle , soft reset , entered sim No. and it worked fine.
Maybe thats all you need to do, although the instruction issued does not say a soft reset is needed, I assumed that the pda would return to normal after the programme was run.

Dear W4XY,

The current unlock tool xda2unlock should work fine for this version. If you don't want to hard reset your device to unlock it, then I'd wait a few days for our new tool. The new tool will unlock all radio version and won't need a hard reset.

Help please. I have unlocked the an XDA2 using this software which works fine and very simple to use. When I put a Vodafone sim into the unit it appears to work with full signal showing but displays "dialing" and immediately displays "call ended".
The unit is using Radio vers 1.05.12 and was locked to O2 - any ideas would be welcome.

Hey Y'all
I used the new unlocker with no problems at all.
Thanks very much :D
Can i ask though, that i have 2 o2 sim cards in, using the Ghost sim Dual Sim.
One Sim has free texts on it & the other has free calls.
Now because both are on the same Network, i am unable to tell which sim is currently activated without trying to ring the phone first, & if it rings i know which is activated.
Is there any way to input something onto the phone or thesim, or some way of seeing at a glance which o2 sim is currently activated.
Many thanks

Planning on buying an O2 XDA II. Be in London only 2 days (Mon/Tue)
Will be using it on different networks like O2, Etisalat (UAE) and Vodacom (South Africa).
I have downloaded the tool xda2unlock.exe in anticipation of my new purchase and need to unlock the network lock.
1) will this tool work?
2) is there a specific process that i must follow to load the software to the device? and where can i find it?
Your help appreciated.

You can click on sim manager and look under "own numbers".

Hey cruisin-thru
Thanks for that, yeah, kinda new that one, also i can put a pin code on one of the cards so that is another way, although, it doesn't sort the main problem.
If i want to return a call or aq text, the only way i can find out which sim is currently active is to either go in & out of flight mode or to go into sim manager.
It would be great if you could maybe change the o2UK sybol on one of the sims, so that it would show something diferent, then you could see at a glance, as soon as you activate the phone, which sim is active.

Hi,
I recently bought a xda2 from ebay for 200 quid. When i picked it up, he showed me it working at the time (pda funtionality), so i was all set to throw xdaunlock on it when i got home and throw my vodaphone sim in.
Seems the phoned was IMEI locked, because im not able to make call's.
It's a great pda, but basically i know i've been had
Anyway...reading on the forums, i see the manipulator can change the imei on an xda1 (at your own risk) but theres no xda2 imei change program. I know its a good thing that locks are in place so that stolen/lost phones can be blocked, but thats not the case is it... for virtually every other make/model of phone their are imei change programs.
Yeah, i know i shouldnt be doing it, but otherwise my well earnt money is throw away... and i dont want to pass this onto someone else through ebay, in the way i got done.
So, what im asking is... If anyone, does know of a way of doing it for the xda2, it would be much appriciated by me. Or, if someday a program comes out here/annywhere that can do it...if you email me about it, i'd be chuffed.
Thanks for listening....
For now, the xda 2 can sit in the drawer with my old snes and collect dust :(

Well, theres always one, and today its me, downloaded the software, disabled activesync, set the xda2 to the bootloader, put it in its cradle and it displayed USB on the screen, ran the software, typed yes, and the message I get is, " your XDA seems to be unlocked allready" put a vodaphone sim in and it asked for the unlock code. My RS version is 1.17, is this the reason ? ROM version is 1.72.00.
Is there any way around this ? is it possible to downgrade the software, get the code and then upgrade again ?
If so, where can I download an ealier version of the XDA2 software ?
Thanks a lot

I have a O2 XDAII with the following :
Rom Version : 1.03.00 USA
Rom date : 09/24/03
Radio Version : 1.05.12
Protocol version: 1337.12
I ran the xda2unlock.exe and got the following results
....Now the device is ready to extract the unlock code.
Type YES when you have completed the above steps and want to continue: yes
Communication port opened.
waiting for radio bootloader
reading first block...
reading second block...
....
Unlock code: 2121128
When you insert a blocked SIM in your XDA2,
you can enter the above code in the SIMLock box.
Alternatively, you can connect to the wireless modem
and enter the following AT command:
AT%HTCLOCK=0,2121128,1
Do not forget to enable USB in Active Sync again!
Press enter to close....
After introducing another sim and entering the code, I got the message 'invalid unlock code, 115 attempts, please wait for timeout'
This code does not seem to work. Obviously, there have been other attempts been made before.
What are my options ? Will I have to upgrade ? How ?
This unlock procedure does not seem to work for me.
Any help will be appreciated.

FAQ , guide ,HELP,manual , instructions to use UNLOCK XDA2 , dos and donts !!!
Tried this tool, this is just a treat, will not take much of your memory, efforts or time !!! Great tool and easy to use.
Before you use it make sure you have correct software for your radio version.
My configuration was
ROM Version: 1.72.00WWE
ROM Date: 03/15/04
Radio version: 1.17.00
Protocol version: 1337.28
ExtROM version: 1.72.181
O2 sim card was in XDA II when i tried this, (it says on forum that we dont need to keep sim in )
I used the second copy of unlock xda program which you can copy to XDA via active sync and run on XDA by going into file explorer and clikcking on it.
It took less than 30 seconds and showed message all was successful, tried T-mobile sim and hurrey it was working, can call outside, can receive calls, can browse internet , will try various sim cards now and will let you know. There was no speed issue with my use of internet after
unlocking, I checked various things including call history etc , there was no impact. all programs were ok , memory status was ok as it was before unlocking. So all well ......
**** ALSO NOTE THAT THIS TOOL WILL NOT UNLOCK YOUR XDA IIs or XDA III ******
Now for those who are trying this for first time follow these instructions :-

should get Successful message ( if you have followed above instructions and checed your RADIO VERION.)
7) AFTER YOU HAVE DONE THIS, CLICK ON O2 ICON AT THE TOP, AND TAP LINK "TURN OFF FLIGHT MODE", THIS WILL TURN OFF YOUR CONNECTION AND LITTLE CROSS WILL APPEAR NEAR CONNECTION ICON.

I have Radio 1.05.12 and have tried everything possible. I have run the bootloader program to obtain the unlock code. I have run 1.05 & 06 unlocking programs which say the phone is unlocked but when i put a new sim in and enter my code it rejects it. It is now over 100 times that i ihave tried to do it. What can i do next?
Any help would be appreciated - i dont have much hair left to pul out.
ps - trying to unlock it from O2 if that makes a difference.

Just put this file on your device using a memory card or active sync and run it. No formatting or doing anything...
Just makes your unlocking code 8 zeros in 2secs!!!
It makes it even stay unlocked after a Hard Reset.

Hi,
When i run the tool on my XDA IIs, it appears like it goes on reading the first block endlessly. I almost waited for 1/2 hour. This may be because when tried to put the XDA on the bootloader/hard reset the screen dint grey out but windoes mobile screen came up asking me to tap the screen. Am i doing something wrong. Please let me know asap.
Thanks in advance.

I have tried all of the software for unlocking the phone yet when i run the unlocker, it seems to unlock the phone, ie i get a signal but when i try to make a call it waits for a few seconds with dialing out and then ends the call.
Can anyone help.
The unlock software unlocks the phone and asks for the unlock code of 8 zero's to be put in, it returns with the prompt that the phones unlocked yet i get no service.
Thanks.
ps sorry its an XDA2s so if theres any for this model i would be greatful. Thanks

obtained a used Xda II from Ebay (on the cheap), but it was locked ... no problemo, as this xda2unlock program worked perfectly from my 64 bit XP machine to the Xda II via the cradle.
wanted to look at the source code, and tried the source link (http://xda-developers.com/xda2/xda2unlock.zip), but it failed ... is there an updated link somewhere? if you have a link, please send it to cryptonomicon.REMOVETHIS@ANDTHIS.phreaker.net
thanks in advance for any clues !!

Hi Im fairly new here, anyhow I used the new unlock tool which worked perfectly until the end of the second block read then states (not precise text) "Your PDA would seem to be already unlocked" and finishes. But when I restart everything and insert the new sim (virgin network) network locked - and it asks for the network code. What am I missing ? My current setup 1.72.00WWE, 03/15/04, 1.17.00, Prot 1337.28, Ext rom 1.72.187
