Don't know what happened, but as far as I can tell we were out of the air for about 15 minutes about ten minutes ago. We never had this...
We manually killed all the apache processes on the webserver and then restarted the daemon and all was well again. No easy-to-be-determined cause in any log files. We'll stay on top of it to see if anything like it happens again.

We just experienced another hang, this one took a little longer before I found out: we were down between 09:38 and 10:27 this morning.
OK, we need to do a more extensive post-mortem, and figure out what's going on here. Expect more news soon...

a few weeks ago I noticed a similar hang, while I was using the site, 5 in the morning orso. I also could not find anything then.
but our apache version is quite old - june 2002. maybe we should upgrade to 1.3.29 or 2.0.48 ( oct 2003 )

Debian still thinks what we have is new enough, but they're a little conservative as that goes.
I'm somewhat reluctant to install Apache and not do it using the Debian dpkg mechanism, but if you wanna have a go at it, be my guest... :)

You mean it happened to a webserver you run, or it happened to you while visiting this board?
If it happened while you visited here, do you remember times it happened? The hang we've seen doesn't seem to 'fix itself', but we'll have a look at the logs...

it just looks like the box is off.
not even a 404.
have you tried the apt-get update ... fixed allot of the apache problems i had on my box. for example cgi didnt work for some reson after the update it did.
have you already checked the apache homepage if the problem is documented ?
