View Full Version : Phone Profiles.... Seriously
I just updated my "flagship software" for Phone Edition.
(sorry for the one month of delay time)
Many many improvements, new features and fixes.
Now you can replace the default balloon message of the upcoming phone, use the fullscreen message, see the caller's photos in any size... or turn the Pocket PC completely off into the Silent Profile.
More fixes for the standard PPC2002 and WM2003 Phone Edition versions.
You can customize the view of taskbar with all default icons are still visible correctly. The only solution for Phone Edition.
Plus: skinable interface, icons, images, messages in the full version, just it going to change the name to the Phone Profiles Seriously.
The Lite Version is free update for current users.
Test it. There is a few different O/S now. Be sure it works with your device correctly.
The Trial Version works 7 days without limits.
More screenshots, descriptions on the new Home Page:
http://www.jgui.net/phoneprofiles/index.html
Read there how to customize your images, icons, message.
I open the contest for the best and fun icons for Phone Profiles.
The winners (3) will get the full version. Until the end of February.

My trial of version 3.1 has just finished, so I downloaded version 5 to see what has changed.
The settings interface is a big improvement, but there are two bugs that I've found which have annoyed me. Also, in version 3.1 I had nice small icons on the Today screen. In version 5 the icons are huge! Too big!
Bugs:
- When I click a profile icon, then choose a time, the click goes through the time button to the today item behind it. The profile is chosen OK, but I then have to close (for example) the Bluetooth setting dialog. Grrr!
- Last night I was browsing my offline IE favourites. As normal, every time I opened a stored page, the XDA2 tried to connect GPRS to check the page version. As normal I clicked the 'cancel' button to stop the GPRS connecting, but every time I did this, the machine turned itself off. I discovered this is because I had chosen a Phone Profile (default Silent) with the setting to turn the machine off after every call. This was a major pain in the ass. :) If this setting is going to cause the machine to switch off like this then I'm never going to use it - it's a wasted setting.
At the moment, Version 5 has disadvantages for me. It's not a step backwards, because the settings interface is improved a lot, but I'm not going to use the program any more. This is a pity - Version 3.1 was excellent!
Hope this helps.
Edit: More bugs? I just set the 'Loudest' profile to 'Vibrate: longer' on incoming calls. Wow. It was definitely longer. It wouldn't stop, even 30 seconds after the phone had passed the call to answerphone. I had to switch it off and back on to stop the vibration. Great. :(
Also on loudest profile, with SMS set to 'Sound: normal' and 'Vibrate: normal', I get no vibration or sound at all when an SMS comes in.
Also also :) , I can't configure MSN Messenger alerts independently, which I could in V 3.1.
Damn, my disappointment level is rising!
1. I think it is safe to see the today screen and changes of phone profiles whe it happen - just to be sure "where you are". why do you want to change the phone profle when you are with another settings dialog? if I undestood you correctly
2. you have right, I did not think in this way. I will fix it. In the meantime: just do not use "turn the power off after the call" option, easy?
thanks for you comments

Thanks for responding quickly.
More explanation:
1.
On the Today screen I have PhoneProfiles with the (large) icons visible. When I tap an icon to change profile I get the timeset buttons (15, 30, 60, 90 etc.). The timeset buttons are bigger than the area that PhoneProfiles needs, so on my screen the timeset buttons overlap the item below, which is my Bluetooth headset profile item. When I click the '---' button to select the PhoneProfile, the click activates the chosen PhoneProfile, but also hits the Bluetooth headset item.
2.
I have disabled the 'Turn power off after the call' option. :)
I uploaded the setup file,
problems with vibrate and fullscreen skinning fixed
btw: when you use "longer vibrate" or "pulse"
and you will not answer the call and the caller cancel the ringing
and now you want to break the vibrations
PRESS the red phone hardware buttons on tap the balloon or fullscreen message

are you sure you want it?
I noticed that when I set different sounds sometimes when I hear my phone ring I do not focus and undestand that it is ringing because my mind expects default ring I use.
in the previous version there was an options to random select sounds from one folder and this given me the same confusion as the one above, sounds changes and I do not recognize that my phone ring when I listen music or tv....
any way, of course I thought so and I can add this feature
you can keep photos and sound in one folder with names as your caller phone numbers and the program will use if found photo or sound with appreciated name to number

Hi!
@JGUI: the description and screenshots look very promising. I would like to use this program to replace the CallerId program that comes with the MDA/XDA II. CallerId is somewhat notorious, and seems to cause many problems.
However, I would like to test this feature before I shell out $39... would you consider making a trial version of the Seriously version? You could limit the caller photos to, let's say, three entries. That would be enough to test the feature, and still give enough incentive to actually buy the program!
Also, do you consider foreign language versions? I'd be happy to help you making a German version, if you want!
Best Regards
Daniel
I made the trial,
of course as I made it always for all my software.
this is one setup file for all versions of Phone Profiles currently,
you install and you start to use the trial,
then you can write in settings dialog the password
to unlock to the lite version or to the full "seriously" version
depend what passwword you got.

Hi JGUI, I downloaded the trail and it look good.
One thing i miss is that whem receiving a sms I can let the red light only flash for 5 minutes up to one hour. I would like to see it flash without limit. So only when I read the sms the red light can go off.

And 39$ it is a little bit more expansive when you see that Crazy kart :D only cost 15$

JGUI:
I downloaded the Seriously version and like many of the features. However, I am trying to figure out how to set all of the features you describe. Your web site has broken links all over the place... and, moreover, it's difficult to find this software without knowing the exact link.
REQUESTED FEATURE:
It would be VERY nice to be able to "schedule" profiles to turn on and off. For example, I'd like to have silent scheduled from 10PM-6AM, then have the default turn on from there...
Thx, JS
broken link?
I think it works fine:
www.jgui.net/phoneprofiles/ (http://www.jgui.net/phoneprofiles/)
scheduling profiles? hmmm? I think it would be "too much".
you will forget your settings between just 4 profiles, scheduled and normal changed, very soon! and you will be wonder that your phone works in unexpected way...
I tested scheduling, my friends too....
We think that the simple tap the icon and change the profile temporary or continuously, it is the better solution...
But I'm still listening comments, awaiting... let's see what others will say...

Well, I would find that a useful feature. You could, for example, program it to go to the "quietest" profile each day from 10pm to 7am, when you're asleep.

Love the software, a request though. If I want to have a picture ID for someone who has let's say 3 or 4 different numbers I need to have the same picture in 4 different files with different names (one for each phone number) in the picture/rings folder.
This is not so good to say the least....
Can you come up with a more clever scheme of doing picture ID?? Say somehow bonded to Contacts like the default Caller ID app???
the following changes are upcoming, almost now:
- set one of profiles to be automatically activated when you connected the external power (cradle or just wire) {the question is: when then you will disconnect it should back to the previous profile (the last one used just before you was connected) or to the some default profile?}
- set one of profiles to be automatically activated in the specified time of day and day of week (some schedulling as users asked me)
assign only one photo and/or sound to the Contact with more than one phone number? hmmmm? maybe I want to see different photos when some caller's from my Contact call me to recognize what device/line she/he is using now? or maybe not?
please let me know more your opinions
new_to_imate

I'm not saying the should ONLY have the option to "assign only one photo and/or sound to the Contact with more than one phone number", but rather that it should be one of the options, since making several copies of the same picture/sound file and renaming each according to the appropriate number is a big hassle and not everyone need this much flexibility (especially at the cost of complex setup)

I think most useful will be group assignments. As you can see on Nokia phones:
- on managers phones there is ringing tones and pictures assigned for groups
- on lowend (phones for teenagers) there is everything assined to each contact.
I prefer groups(categories) assignments. I want to hear one tone for all my friends, another one for family and another for workmates. Same with pictures.
So let the one contact assigments and please add categories one.

I join the other forum members in wishing for a scheduled on/off option. Additionally I wish for Pocket Outlook integration. I spend half my work day in and out of meetings. I find myself turning sound on & off at least 5 - 6 times a day. Why??? All my meetings are in Outlook and I mark my time Busy.
If there was a profile that "watched" the Calendar DB and whenever it hit an appointment with a user definable flag (ie Busy) switched to the user selected mode (ie silent or vibrate only etc) and at the end of the appointment period switched back then this would be all the profile management I would need...
Additionally I must say, the software is buggy.... It was buggy with prior versions and is still buggy. With all due respect to JGUI, he does a great job in the creative compartment but perhaps not so well in the QA compartment. The dialog boxes are not very intuitive & standard either which adds to the learning curve. If I was him I would open up his software for a mass beta on this forum, recruit some QA volunteers and keep them well fed with free licenses and fix the code before going any further...
Just my .2 cents. Don't mean bad. Just want to see this promising software mature. Thanks
Any way... I'm also working with special popup interface

Got the same problems:
- CallerID pops up and blocks the PPS-Screen
- individual pics and rings for callers don't work
MDA2
Perhaps a bug? I placed the rings and pics in a folder on the device, named them as (i.e.) +49172334455.jpg and +49172334455.wav (this number apears when a call is incoming in exact this way --> +49172334455 - so I think, I got it right?!) In settings I set the right folder (with pics and rings in it) ... so what could I've done wrong?
Help would be very appreciated, cause I bought the full version at PocketGear (over 30 bucks) and this SW doesn't do more than all the others, without proper configuration of individual rings and pics (means: it's useless until it works as promised).
Thanks in advance,
Bastian
Used SW:
- Agenda Fusion 5
- some today plugs
(but I disabled them just for debuggin' and it did't work neither, so I assume, it's a PPS problem)

I've had numberous problems with this software--I have a hard time swallowing $39 for software that has so many problems.
Here are some:
- when a call is missed, caller id pop-up window doesn't go away.
- fast, intermittent vibrate is erradic
- when I click on START, the screen disappears
AND,
Not to mention trying to UN-install it! Impossible without destroying your PDA. After "forcing" the uninstall b/c files were in use and there is no way of unloading it, it retained whatever settings were left the last time; in my case silent with no vibrate--my vibrate never worked again.
I think the bugs should be fixed before new features are added. Baseline this puppy!
POSITIVELY NOTING, however--I love the software concept. If everything worked consistently, I'd pay $49 for it! It's not the money, but the quality!

I tested the old "MY|PHONE|PROFILE" but decided not to purchase it awaiting a more stable version . Well yesterday I decided to purchase the new "Phone Profiles Seriously" as it seemed to be a be more mature version. BIG MISTAKE. I wasted not only US$ 35 for that piece of cr*p, but got my SD card erased (boot sector corrupted ?) .
Here is what happened, I installed the new version .. started testing it .. seems working fine. Played around with the options .. still ok. Then I see that it hangs sometimes, so I decide to remove it from TODAY Items. Whoop, XDA restarts and card is erased. I never had a card erase issue with my current ROM&RADIO version (have it for five months now) or with any earlier versions. :?
I tested the Procedure above and it restarts every time; not sure if it erased the card again cause it was already empty! :(
So be warned, back up your SD card if you're thinking about testing this software.

I have 2 new tips for features:
If it's possible, it will be great to have one more button in incomming phone call dialog to enable Bluetooth + enable BT headset. I don't know if it is possible to enable it during phone ringing, but if so, it will be great, because I can leave bluetooth off, on only when I need it, I have the option to turn it on.
Also the original Today BT headset switch with anoying dialogs about turning BT first, will be great to replace with one button on Phone Profiles Bar enabling both in one step without question dialogs.

I have found the following problem with JGUI Phone Profiles 5.5
When I switch between the various profiles, sound for SMS and E-Mail is disabled despite having set a sound in Phone Profiles.
If I check the setting in Phone-Notifications, the check mark for sound for these elements has been disabled.

Also, I can't set the LED to blink for an unlimited period.

Wiredup and renegade seem to have had difficulty in uninstalling the software. There was a bit of a special procedure to uninstall properly in version 3.1 but that option seems to have disappeared out of 5.5

I just tried to uninstall PPS, but I seem to have the same probs here. I'd have to clean the registry manually, but there's still the PPS Volume setting activated (Quitest Profile) and I can't turn it of. Perhaps I've to reinstall everything. :(
Don't get me wrong, JGUI, but if there's no possibility to clean up the mess in a proper way, I'd really like to have my money back. I'm a student and 35bucks are 35bucks :) But I still hope you can solve those problems. If I could help you in any way (perhaps testing), say a word.
Perhaps we can try to get it workin' on MDA2/XDA2 devices with installed T-Mobile sw - there might be some folks in germany, who'd really like to get the sw, if it would work (cause the t-mobile sw is some piece of s*it ... but at least it works ...).

JGUI:
Today, I disturbed a couple of collegues by a loud melody playing when I received an SMS.
I would really love this software to work on the XDA II - or in my case, and Orange M1000.
Enhancements wanted:
Take a look at MiniGPS for the Symbian platform (Nokia 3650 etc). This really usefull piece of software monitors the GSM cells you are logged on to and enables you to execute events when you enter a cell or group of cells.
My Nokia phone automatically enters the 'pager' profile when I am about 500 m from work, and switches back to normal when I have left work. That way, I never distrub other people i our open-office workspace.
Functionality like that would be the final touch for your app. There is a bad need for phone profiles for the XDA II and your app looks like the most promising.
I would be happy to test and report straight back if you update the app. And I WILL buy it when it works.

Alright folks, this is the skinny:
1. this guy is promising the world but hasn't yet baselined his product.
2. I haven't seen an acknowlegement of the software deficiences, just new features
3. his website didn't work (links), now it has been redesigned and NON of the links work AT ALL.
4. he hasn't been available to respond to the problems we're experiencing--your end users are your asset and someone willing to test your software for free is even more valuable (and some of us have paid for it!)
5. he stirred the same comotion on another board
To be honest with you, this makes me want to gather end user requirements using a Systems Engineering approach and write the software myself! The concept is awesome, but the software is worthless.

I would be interested in this software if it could do the following
I am using a dual sim (mobileplace.co.uk) so i can switch between personal and business lines.
Switching between sims is a pain. This can be done by turning the radio off and back on again (and more quickly by changing the profile to flight and then back again but a single button or two buttons as a Today plugin would be really useful.
Button 1 would turn the flight profile on and off with one press
Button 2 would turn the flight profile on and off Twice with one press
I'm happy I can announce the upcoming 5.7. version. This Friday.
Added:
- you can set one of profiles to be automatically using when you put XDA to the cradle or connect the external power
- you can set the feature to back to the previous used profile before you use the above feature
- you can customize the indicator of the currently selected Profile when you use icons from external file, this indicator can be in any size and with transparent background of course
Fized:
- some operating in WindowMobile2003 system for volume controls
In the meantime, I'd like to share some trick: if you use iconskin.bmp as your external icon's file with empty area with color 255,0,255 in a whole area this will make PhoneProfiles icons completely transparent. In this case you can organize your default Pocket PC Theme background as you icons for PhoneProfiles, in any size.
This is an example of this trick + the new feature of customized indicator of the currently selected Profile.
http://www.jgui.net/phoneprofiles/today_matrix.jpg
PLUS:
there is "sexy monkies", some kind of "adult" icons to free downloading and using as your PhoneProfiles icons
  :o
check the Home Page of PhoneProfiles
okay, this is the theme I used on the above preview
Enjoy! :P 8)
I play with the matrix concept to amuse myself even more. :o
http://www.jgui.net/phoneprofiles/today_matrix2.jpg
I decided to use not only one indicator for every profile, but four separately: one indicator for each profile's icon.
You can make both iconskin.bmp and checkskin.bmp in the same size and checkskin will cover iconskin in the area of one profile to indicate this one is currently selected. Transparent background works in both files in the same way. The scale of one profile icon and indicator is automatically resized.
Fine!
Now I really like my Today Screen and PhoneProfiles.

So please get things done or tell us how to get our money back. As I told, I can wait and I'm willing to wait - if those bugs get disposed of once and for all and the sw is working as described.

To JGUI,
Stop making fun of your customers!!! We paid A LOT of money for a highly bugged piece of software. Stop playing with your features and start fixing the bugs or give us our money back!!!! :x :x :x :x :x

Hmmm, this piece of software looks very promising at first sight, but after reading those complaints about the lethargical commitment of the author regarding the several (severe) bugs, I'm quite reluctant to spend my good money on this software...
Funny, I have no complaint. 5.7 works fine, and has features I was waiting for such as the possibility to choose whether one wants to have the volume level for the phone and ppc sounds connected or adjustable separately ....

I can't test it, was greeted with 'Trial Period Expired' after installing 5.7
It is becomming a bit of a farce - what a pity, I would gladly buy the basic version if it worked.
The program looks so promising.
JGUI, how about removing the expiration function entirely, it appears that a number of customers has payed for buggy versions, maybe you should trust us to pay if it works and we use it.
I would

Hey... Can someone explain what the feature in JGUI Profiles "System Wakeup and turn the power off after the time in seconds" is for.
I've noticed that since I've been testing the program every little bit, the PPC turns on, then after the usual 1 minute timeout it goes back off..
I assume it's this setting. What is the purpose of this? Is there a way to disable it? Seems like it would kill the battery much faster.
Thanks in advance.

I'm happy I can announce the upcoming 5.7. version. This Friday.
Please please start to fix the bugs instead of adding new features!
I installed 5.7 and the problems as described by several people in this thread are not fixed ...
JGUI? Are you still alive? No answer to support-mails. No fixes for the bugs ...
jake
I am here.
Just sometimes I work with another projects. But I read your comments and add as many fixes as I can do. I hope I will give you update before the end of this or the next week. I just work up with fixes for XDAII too.
If someone observe that the power turned down after installation. Just try to switch the power on by the hardware buttons several times and then go to the phone profiles settings and uncheck "power off" options for some profiles.
 and for your interests my friends,
currently I work with the project, below you see the example of using...
exactly I made this photo yesterday.
(its a GPS software for the larger screen webpads, I made it, because - at least for me - it is not fun to navigate with the small ipaq screen, when I'm driving for longer time.)

I think he's on another planet, folks.
I gave up on PhoneProfiles(Seriously!) a couple of weeks ago. I'm not paying $30 for that buggy software. JGUI has a long way to go before his software is worth that amount.
I'm sorry, really.
But I use my phoneprofiles for weeks and months without special problems with my device (t-mobile) and I have many customers who do so. I did not lost my sms alerts, phone rings, speaking volume.
Please make (or check) all phoneprofiles settings. Some fixes work with some device only when you make your own settings at least one time.
As I written: the problem is in the manufactures of phone edition devices, because they added non-standard drivers. As I got comments from users I add more fixes in response to different changes made by manufactures.

can you please fix the problem with the expiry date - or better remove any time check.
I am still interested in buying, but only if and when I get a version that works.
Graphics are very nice, it would be a pity if this program did not make it to the masses.
I believe testing a previous version caused the present to expire - which means that you probably left something somewhere on my XDA II even after a uninstall !

Hi JGUI
How big is your program?
I got a serious problem with phone memory.
Can it be installed to storage card?
Thanks.

Can't wait to see your reply.
Install the trial version and run okay.
However the photo display function is not functioning. I guess its because I save the photos in the storage card.
Anyway, the other functions are fine and the size occupied is not too much.

Hmm. I'm testing the prog for some weeks now and still it causes more problems than working in a proper way. Sometimes, the PDA turns off and last week those strange offs killed my SD-Card.
It may be, that those failures are up to the individual software of my provider - but it only occurs, if PhoneProfiles is installed. So I really would enjoy an upcoming fix.

Nice try, but that is one of the buggiest software apps I've ever experienced. It took me all of 15 minutes to look at it and decide to unload it. Maybe I'll give it another try later, but man, that software should not be released at this time and certainly not for sale. I don't mean to be rude, but I expect much more stability from a commercial offering.
looks like JGUI doesnt care about his customers :)
JGUI - I suggest you purchase or borrow a Nokia phone, notably the newer ones like the 6600 or the 3650, and see how their profiles operate.
Here's the list of things you should do:
Fix the bugs
Fix the bugs
Fix the bugs...
then when that's done:
Add new features.

I downloaded the lite version and was quite happy. So I paid $29.99 for this software and I fully regret my decision. Here are thebugs:
1) No matter which profile I select, the system volume (not phone volume) always turns to minimum (1 notch above zero) automatically.
2) I've never managed to run the features of :
i) customised ballon message
ii) caller's photo
iii) caller's ring
I've followed 100% of the instructions as on the website. BUT it never works!!! No matter how many times I tried.
I've sent message to JGUI and www.pocketgear.com and only got the reply telling me to upgrade!
What a joke!
Any way I can get refund? No, I think.
I think JGUI simply doesn't care their customers (which I do not feel I am treated like a customer at all)
ONCE AGAIN, I sincerely hope nobody would be the next victim.
Important news: I decided to break the developing of the next 6.0. version. Because I start to make a totally new version 7.0. compatibility with the specification of Window Mobile 2003 Second Edition. This new version is rewritten and improved. Due many requests I will make two separate versions again: lite without skinning of the upcoming call message and in the lower price and another "serious" with more settings for skinning. I hope I will update on May or June to this version.
For all users of 5.0. or 5.5 current versions, with problems of sound volume: please use the slider of settings: alert, to manage the volumes when you change the profiles.
Thank you.

Don't want to be funny, but $29.99 for a tiny mobile app that doesn't work properly, not to mention the fact that everyone is bug testing and reporting for you free of charge, sounds very much like the author has trained at the Bill Gates software academy.
A full price PC game (on average 15-20 developers per game, 1-2 years in development, Massive hardware costs etc etc) costs not that much more than this tiny little app.
Well thats my 2 cents worth anyway

While installing PPSeriously error occurs : Cannot find PhoneProfiles Traybar (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and all the required libraries are available.
What is this JGUI ?
