http://www.xda-developers.com/XDAtools/
the different guides here should be plenty of help
here is something i copy'd from this site at one poit
Ok here you go, its a little outdated but its what I still use:
Qman's how to use XDArit to write nk.nb1 or nk.nbf to your SD card aka the Bootloader Method!
1. Place XDArit and the nk.nb1 or nk.nbf file in the same folder and start XDArit.
2. Select your SD card (disk drive) from the drop down menu.
3. Select Write to SD
Notice that the Windows CE box is already checked so just click the browse button at the end of that window.
4. Select your (nk.nb1 or nk.nbf) image and then Open
Notice by default XDArit will open looking for a *.nb1 file but if you're going to use a .nbf file you'll have to manually change the "Files of Type" to *.nbf
Notice that nk.nbo / nk.nbo was automatically added as your boot-loader and its check box is unchecked so leave it that way and click OK. XDArit should start writing to the card.
When XDArit has finished writing the image put the SD-card into the XDA and hold the power button and soft reset. You'll be taken to the below screen:
SD DOWNLOAD
Card Type:
CE OS & BOOT
Press action to Download
Or
Press REC to Exit
Press action to download and it will start the download/restore from the SD card.
Follow the on screen instructions once its "Completed" which will consist of a "Soft Boot/Reset".
BTW the above is based on using XDArit version 1.0 which can be download from the software section at:
http://www.yorch.net and a PCI USB 3-One Travel Flash reader P/N FPT-D bought at Fry's.
The 4.01.00 ENG version is here ftp://tmobile:rom@130.39.48.102:21 ..
but be careful as it contains the upgrade for RSU and I 'm not sure
it supports 900/1800 or not since it's TMO upgrade.
If your device has no Radio problems (GSM),
my advice would be to down load the file, use Winzip or WinRAR to
extract the NK.nbf file which the ROM upgrade, put it on SD card and flash your XDA using the bootloader.
PS: if you are sure that your network is 1800 MHz then do NOT use R6.24 for RSU upgrade.
Good luck
anyway i would get a sdcard and a sdcard reader the price is not all that high for any of them

not sure prob the latest 4.01.00 ENG
and be very sure that it were only the rom and not the
radiostack i were upgrading since i seem to recall that 4.01 is US gsm
but i'm not sure i'm upgrading untill i get more tired of messing with 2002 and what applications i like
then i can complain more about the applications which i really really love and need but dont work with 2003 :P
plus people still report issues with 2003 deleting their sdcard for no reason
so if you give it a go be sure to not have infomation on your sdcard which you dont have back'd up so you can get them back if it mess up

its very fast and seems extreamly stable :) v4.01.00 is stable but is soo slow and seems to make tomtom 2 run slowly as in takes about 3 minutes to start up ect...
get the vA.30.07 rom from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=5492&start=25

On your xda you have 2 things,
the rom, thats your operation system, now pocketpc 2002, you wanted to update it to windows mobile 2003.
And you have the radio rom, this is the "operation system" for your cell phone part of your xda.
If you update to A.30.07, the windows mobile 2003 beta, you leave your radio rom in tact, so you can continue making calls :P
Also, watch out for those updates what are programs,
because the also update your radio rom,
better use a .nb1 file with xdatools

Hi,
reading with interest,
Zetec is asking most of my questions for me - but one that I'd like to add:
Does the ppc2003 upgrade allow you to control the phone and the pda volume separately (as per the xda II)?
Thanks

yes, I have one slide bar for the phone and one voor the os (music, alarms, etc)

yup dual volume controls :D also on v4.01.00 it has a tab called band showing 1900mhz or 900mhz this means you then have to loose 1800mhz (but can be brought back in bootloader) on the vA.30.07 there is no tab like this so in other words no need to go into bootloader so you wont loose your 1800mhz :D
so vA.30.07 is great for countries using 900/1800 :D

gazzaman2k,
I updated the rom last night everything is working just fine, very nice and it runs very smoothly as well.
I have put Tom Tom 2.24 and that seem to work as well, and the speed is great:)
Just one question what gps driver is best to use because i'am only getting a couple of bars on the gps status???
Also on the phone side i'am getting on my desktop an AT&T WIRELESS tab??? is that right...
And finally what can i use for closing programs from the desktop, making sure they close by tapping the X in the courner of the screen. Because when i close a program they still remain in the programs running under memory tab...
please let em know
Thanks alot
Zetex;)

att wireless in today... u seeing it because this rom is from them and they force it in there, no biggie go to the today - items screen in the settings and uncheck it it will be gone,
as for the programs remaining in the memory that is how the OS has been for a while get aversion of POCKETNAV from Scott seligman woreks well to move around the OS and helps u close unwanted proggies
http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/cestuff.html
also the GPS thing isnot a driver issue it is WM2003 feature ( or drawback u may call it) that the signal meter is poor... it is only the display that is poor the signal strength when u see one single dot is about 40% (i tried the trial version of ipdashboard which will tell u in numbers what the strenght is) so just live with it....
hope it answers most of the ?'s

yeah windowsCE have always mixed the alt tab kind og closing with normal closing i asume that it's to make loading faster if you often use the same stuff
it's a good custom to force programs down once in awhile because if you played quake 1 or 2 and then pacman and the deside to listen to mp3 it's going to sound crack smack and pop :P

Zetex, glad to hear the upgrade went succesfully!
Did you use the SD card method described earlier in this thread?
Is your UK 02 phone the version with the 32Meg Rom or the 64?
If it is the 64, does anyone know if the beta ROM fits into the 32 Meg version.
Any news as to whether the final version has come out yet?
Thanks

xdardd,
hi m8,
my xda is a 64mb version, i used xdatools to put the rom on to my xda. The xdatools is a fantastic creation and work very well...
my phone is ok, but i want to find out how i upgrade to stack v4.21??
i'am sure someone will let you kow shortly concerning the test rom running on a 32mb version. as far as i know it will do.. but iam no expert. One thing i would say is back up your rom just in case...
hope this helps m8

zetex
2nd February 2004, 11:29 AM
I can confirm yes it killed it by upgrading the radio stack from v4.20 to v4.21. it was working very well after i updated the rom to wm2003.
To other people don't update the radio stack.... if you do you will kill your xda like i did. My xda no longer even powers up and allows me to go into the bootloader:(
I have contacted the service center in the UK, and they have told me it can be fixed under warranty. I explained to him what it was doing (no longer would turn on)
I did'nt tell them it was my fault, they took my imei no and the seriel no and they told me the xda comes with a 2 yr warranty and mine would be repaired under warranty...
I asked what happens in cases like this, they replied we would first check the battery if that is ok we would them replace the mainboard and test and return...
I thought (to myself) well it won't be the battey so if they replace the mainboard it will be as good as new and they have promised to have it back to me by thursday of this week, fantastic service..... that if it turns out like that and they can't tell that i broke it, if they can then it will be at my cost probably...
I think O2 customer service could learn a trick or two from the Xda service center... of how to treat customers...
anyway i will let you all know how i get on.....
Thanks

Thanks, for the great xda-tools. After i read a lots of stuff about the upgrading xda from this site then one night, finally i'm confidence to burn my rom with xda-tools rather than using the xdarit for unix or something else that really complicated.
I have 02 xda PW10A1 and this is a step by step guide for upgrading your own 02xda from MW2002 to MW2003 :
1. Download xda-tools at http://www.xda-developers.com/XDAtools/
2. Burn your own ROM at www.yorch.net
3. Install xda-tools then backup your original ROM to your hardisk.(incase there's a problem)
4. Get Ready to burn. PLUG YOUR POWER ADAPTER to your craddle (CHARGING MODE).
5. DONT MESS WITH THE PROCESS, its about 5 minutes to finish. Just stand still watching these progress bar reach 100%.
6. When it finished, disconnect the PDA from the craddle.
7. Hard Reset it.
That's it. It's working like charm. The box will displaying 'Test Only, Not For Sale'.. but who cares :)
After reading the forum about the high risk to upgrade the Radio Unit and who has a lot of problem with the RSU upgrade, i upgraded my box with tools from official site of 02 from version 4.20 to 4.21.
Conclusion : The WM2003 has minor improvement but its FASTER than WM2002.
