I must admit I am finding accesspanel very useful though just trying it out.

What is the best application to back-up the XDA selectively? I have seen some info on this elsewhere but it seemed to indicate that a new version of software is being developed more compatible with XDA II. Any further info?

My favorite third-party apps (in no particular order):
Agenda Fusion (http://www.developerone.com/agendafusion/index.htm)
tAgenda (freeware) (http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/kohgo/index_en.html)
PocketBible (http://www.laridian.com/ce/catpocketbible.asp)
Pocket Plus (http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/?en)
Total Commander (freeware) (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm)
Pocket Slides (http://www.conduits.com/products/slides/)
PHM Registry Editor (freeware) (http://www.phm.lu/products/PocketPC/RegEdit/)
Check Notifications (freeware) (http://www.scarybearsoftware.com/ppc_cn_overview.html)
eWallet (http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/ew/ewallet.htm)
Frequency Tuner (freeware) (http://www.frequencytuner.solcon.nl/index.html)

I'd go with some of what's already been mentioned plus a couple of others:

- nPOPw to replace Pocket Outlook for emails (Freeware)
- Pocket ICQ (Freeware)
- ScaryBear Check Notifications & Auto-clear (Freeware)
- InsertCredit BatteryBar (Freeware)

- Agenda Fusion (once you've changed the default garish colours)
- Resco File Explorer
- ListPro by Ilium Software
- SPB GPRS Monitor

The weakpoint of WM2003, in my opinion, is Pocket Outlook, which is so empty of features that it's unusable. I replaced the calendar, contacts and to-do list manager with Agenda Fusion, which is just superb, and I replaced the email client with nPOPw.

Try nPOPw for yourself - it's free. Where Pocket Outlook took sometimes a minute or two to connect to my POP server over GPRS and look for emails, nPOPw takes about 2 seconds to check an account. Plus, you can check all accounts manually with one tap in nPOPw. It works slightly differently in concept to Outlook, but it's a better concept, IMHO.

my two cents:
Resco File Explorer
FingerClix
Digital Expedition eXPerience (XP interface on the PocketPC, great!)
IP Dashboard
Pocket TV
etc etc
