that is caused by this line

This morning i did the upgrade.
i hadn't any problem to upgrade from the previous 1.60.00WWE NL.
This release seem to work as good as the 1.60.00. Plus, it has a SMS incoming tone.
The only problem (and it isn't quite little...) is that the battery full indicator says 3h57m versus the 7h30m of the previous release i had...
By the moment, i don't think upgrade has been a great idea...

Somehow I changed my device ID in my MDA II...

that is caused by this line
xda2nbftool -sd PH10 -so Qtek -sl WWE -v ms_.nba

The line changes the rom ID to Qtek so it can work on the MDA II with an Qtek ID.

If i use getdevicedata trick it says it's a Qtek. While I have an original Tmobile MDA II. Original Tmobile Rom's won't work.

If there was a way to change my device ID to Tmobile (what it should be anyway), I wouldn't have to use xda2nbftool and change the rom to Qtek right?

Isn't it possible to encrypt the files again with the XOR option?
What is exaclty in the Update.rar? Are these ammended versions of the update procedure with takes the decrypted files instead?

itsme
10-03-2004, 11:58 PM
I was not entirely correct, the device id is taken from the first 40 bytes after the nbf header in the ms.nbf file. ( which is written to offset 0x10000 in the disk-on-chip )

see http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/DiskOnChip

I don't remember if it is possible, but maybe you can write to that part of the disk-on-chip from CE.

What is exaclty in the Update.rar? Are these ammended versions of the update procedure with takes the decrypted files instead?

the Update.rar file contains v0600 of the HimeUpgradeUt.exe tool. which is the one that understands devices with language id 'WWE'.
I am not sure about the newer v0910 which is in this update.
but if that works, you should be able to use the v0910 too, by xorring again.

Many thanks.

Try this:

Works only for upgrade from Dangaard (or Qtek) 1.60.21 WWE to T-Mobile 1.60.36 WWE

1. Download the T-Mobile ROM from the link in this posting
2. You now get a file called RUU160036WWE_T-Mobile_NL.exe
3. Extract this file with Winzip to a new folder
4. Extract the attached file to the same folder
5. Start the conversion and upgrade by double-clicking convert.bat

It's just an automated way of doing all the steps described in several previous postings.

Since my XDA is a T-Mobile for the moment, I'll flash it with the Dangaard ROM this evening at home and try it out.

I used my method with the update.rar on purpose as normally the radio_.nbf and ms_.nbf are NOT encrypted, and this method does!

It's possible that by encrypting, you are locking your extended rom.
But maybe that's not true.

Anyway, it worked for me, and that's what's it al about. Isn't it?

Jos
11-03-2004, 03:14 PM
You're right, I was a little bit to fast.

Modified the file in the original post, it should work now.

Don't know if the HimaUpgradeUt version 0.9.1.0 locks the extended ROM.
Mine was already locked anyway.
It think they just use XOR instead of the earlier password.
XOR is often used as encryption mechanism.

Jos

xkingz

I noticed that my Device ID has been changed back to TMobile again with this rom update. :D

If the XOR method does produce locked extended roms try this:

1. Download the T-Mobile ROM: http://www.t-mobile.nl/global/media/zip/RUU16036WWE_T-Mobile_NL.exe
2. Extract this file with Winzip/Winrar to a new folder
3. Extract the attached file to the same folder and overwrite all files
4. Start the conversion by double-clicking Qtek.bat, IMATE.Bat or O2.bat

5. Now you can edit the extended Rom (MS_.nbf) with http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/ER2003Edit
6. Manually click HimaUpgradeUT.exe to update your rom.

Hi !

I am a total newbe in terms of modifing the roms of these phones...
I have a couple of questions that hopefully someone can help me with.

I have tried to search for possible language problems but I do not know if they all relate to the MDA II/XDA II...

I am waiting for my MDA II to arrive, it is the German version so I would like to upgrade the thing to the new MDA II NL Version(it is in English right)?

Will I have problems with Language ID upgrading to the NL-version, if so can the image be modified so that I can get it to work on my German MDA II?

My MDA II is sim-free so I guess I will not have any problems using my O2-subscription but for the fact that I will not have any GPRS-settings automatically installed.
Can the O2-software that handles the GPRS-configuration be used on a MDA II phone?

Translated from the dutch TMobile site:

Improved in this version:

* Optimal GPRS transmisson (E-mail, MMS, etc.)
* Improved Bluetooth functionality (manually activate serial Bluetooth profiles for connecting with external Bluetooth devices).
* Improved contactlist for sending SMS-messages (contacts with multiple phonenumbers now have extra option to send SMS message).
* Better SMS functionality (send SMS to multiple persons at once, with notification when succesfully delivered to all).
* The "+" sign will be saved if sending SMS to contacts with international phonenumbers.
* Saves *31# (show own number) and #31# (Hide own number) when used, in call history (could be usefull for redialling).
* Improved videostreaming
* Security updates for MSN Messenger

Use the mod patch I posted earlier (only works with Qtek - Dangaard ROM).

To change the boot image, you need ER2003 Edit, can be found here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/ER2003Edit

To change the extended rom with the boot image, first patch the rom by running convert.bat from my earlier post. When the upgrade program starts after the conversion, just click cancel.

Unzip the attached file to the folder with the ROM.

Run decode.bat

Modify the rom with ER2003 Edit

Run encode.bat, the upgrade starts automatically.

There was a little mistake in the encode.bat.
It would not update the extended ROM.

I posted the correct version in the previous posting and it's also attached to this message.

For those who created a customized extended ROM, just download "decode extended rom.zip" and only run encode.bat from the zip file.

Dear All,

After reading through this topic thoroughly, I have the following question: would it be theoretically possible to include every application you want on the device ROM as long as you have the correct .CAB file and the CAB file is less than 16 MB's big?

For instance: I have this file 'gps.ppc3_arm.CAB' which was included with an older version of Tom Tom Navigator, when you run this file on the PDA, a simple GPS Utility is installed. If I would include it in the 'ms_.nbf' (after decrypting it) with ER2003 and update the 'Config.txt' file in the same 'ms_.nbf' by adding the line 'CAB: \Extended_ROM\gps.ppc3_arm.CAB' somewhere in the middle, then this file application would always be included in my PDA, correct?

If this is true, then I am strongly thinking about creating my own ROM with Tom Tom Navigator embedded. All the essential cab and ini files combined take up about 4,7 MB... With a map stored on an SD card, the application would always be available and never would dissappear from the PDA...

Take care,

Araaf

Well, I'm a little confused here.
Please answer a few questions.
1. Is this an official T-Mobile ROM upgrade?
2. I own the MDA II, with 1.60-ROM, Radio-1.06.01, Ext ROM-1.60.06. I see a lot of help with how to convert this ROM from other devices, XDA II, Imate, etc, how about the MDA II?
3. Is there a Dutch or other English equivalent, or is this ROM Upgrade available in English?
4. I have read that it improves GPRS, Bt is better, SMS is better, anything else?
5. How to I get an English Version of this ROM upgrade?
6. Do you feel that this ROM upgrade is worth the bother of the hardreset and reconfiguring of the device?

6. The 1.60.06 is pretty stable, if your MDA II is working ok, and you feel no need to upgrade then don't.

Youre welcome.

Thank you,
I was not aware that the T-Mobile Germany would publish a English (WWE) ROM.
Have you upgraded yourself?
Is the GPRS back to always on like the original ROM, 1.30?
That would be a reason to change for me, even though I have the utility that was published to correct this.
If the GPRS works better and faster I would be also interesteD.
I have not read what the BT fixes are. Is the headset profile fixed?
I cannot read German or I would read for myself.

Sorry for being a bother, but with the new ROM Upgrade, which I have just downloaded, is it a simple process to get the ROM on the device?
I see that a window comes up stating to continue so I assume it is self explanatory.
I'm not comfortable hacking around, unless I have good instructions.

Ed,

If you own a T-Mobile, it's straightforward.
Hacking is only necessary if your device has another brand.

Just open the downloaded file, make sure your MDA II is connected to the power and don't use an usb hub.

By the way, the update is published on the Dutch T-Mobile site, not the German one. Though the site is in Dutch, the upgrade is in English, since there's no Dutch version of Pocket PC Phone Edition 2003.

I upgraded to the new T-mobile 1.60.36 on My Qtek.
Now i want the Qtek 1.60.21 ROM back, but get also the Country ID error.
So i looks like this T-Mobile Rom changes my Operator ID to T-Mobile?
How can i get the original 1.60.21 ROM back in my Qtek?

Jos,
I get it the link is to the Dutch site, now it makes since.
Have you upgraded?
I suppose T-Mobile continues to leave the GPRS not always connected. I heard that this was their policy now, for fear of too much traffic. The good fellow Gorg, has that little app. that takes care of that anyway, and I hear you can interrupt the Ext. ROM loading by soft reset and not load all those unnecessary apps.
Interesting that there is little mention of this upgrade on other sites that have postings on the device.
Wish I knew more about the mentioned fixes on this thread and if there is actual improvement on device performance.

I have the ROM version 1.60.00WWE, Radio-1.06.01, which is the higher rate you list, but the lower 1.10 Radio profile-does that come with the new 1.60.36 ROM upgrade?
I thought the site said the GPRS is better?

Ext.Rom is only version number changed
Radio Version 1.10. Is Not Best.

Radio vote 5

I have now successfully upgraded my MDA II with the new rom.

I would also like to add the O2-specifik apps in the extended ROM.
I could make a custom-rom bz adding the O2-custom-files and remove
the T-Mobile files by using er2003Edit.
Can I use the HimaUpgradeUt.exe that came eith the new ROM and remove the NK.nbf and Radio_.nbf files to onlz update the extended rom.
Or will this generate errors?

After the upgrade you can also reach the extended rom with this atached file.

Run it on your pocket PC, and do a soft reset.
After that the extened rom is visible from the explorer.

Now you can edit it just like you would with ER2003edit.
After a hard reset it will automatically install your own made Rom.

Good luck.

Georg,
Few more clarifications: If I install the ROM 1.60.36 Upgrade will I automatically get the 1.10 Radio Version?
You state that the upgrade changes Ext. ROM only. If so why are they claiming the BT fix and GPRS enhancements? Unless this can be accomplished through the extended ROM.
If the Radio comes with it, and you give that a bad rating, and overall you give it a neutral rating, I would say that this upgrade is not worth it. Especially when considering that I would have to spend half a day getting my device back in order.
Thank You,
By the way your GPRS Tweak is great and has made me very happy to get my GPRS back to Always On, which was taken away with the 1.60 ROM

Hi,

Well the upgrade includes the actual OS-upgrade, The new 1.10 Radio-stack and the T-Mobile extended ROM.

I am pretty sure that you can remove the Radio-stack-upgrade from the upgrade to stay with your current one.
Can somebody verify this?

I will soon try to cook my own Ext-rom so that I get the O2-specifik GPRS-settings and stuff.

I did use the wxr.rom viewer patch metioned earlier but my ROM seems to be write protected so I must customice and ext-rom using the er2003Edit to make changes to the ROM!

Why do you think the radio 1.10 ROM is worse?
I have seen a disconnect button when you tap the communication icon on the task bar.
But I know now that is not a funtion of the Radio 1.10 ROM, but something in extended ROM.

I went back to my original Qtek 1.60.21 ROM.
Because i had a crash within a day, and i can't delete files with the File Explorer in my \windows\Startup folder.

I made my own ROM from the original 1.60.21 ROM and the radio Rom 1.10 from T-Mobile and some add-on in extended ROM from T-mobile such as, GPRSMonitor_WWE.sa.CAB and Clearvue.sa.cab.

Thanks to all who wrote the info in this GREAT forum. :D

Yes (No if delete file Radio_.nbf)

The fix is already on 1.60.00 ROM and EXT.ROM 1.60.21.

Thank You,
I will not be upgrading to the 1.60.36, unless I hear something more positive down the road. I'm surprised that this ROM upgrade was even published.
When are they HTC, T-Mobile) going to provide a real upgrade, that seriously fixes the BT Stack and provides other worthwhile enhancements?
Oh well, perhaps the new Motorola MX will have it more together.
This is not to say that I do not think that the HTC 2003 PPC Phone is not a great device, because I do. In fact this is the best device I have ever owned. Just spoiled and would like better support for the device.

Test speed download rate over GPRS

Radio version 1.10.00 is maximum speed 43Kbit/s :(,

after record back radio version 1.06.01 is again maximum speed 54Kbit/s

I actually upgraded my MDA2 with a Radio version 1.10 yesterday and my speed is average of 47 Kbit/s. (thats according to GPRS-monitor) and last night around 3 AM(PST) my speed bumps to 90Kbit/s once and another 73 Kbit/s. So I guess the speed is depends on the traffic of how many people are using at that time. And today mid-afternoon my speed is only 43-48Kbit/s and when I do the speed test I get 50Kbit/s....(using Performance testing(string))

USING this site: http://performance.chello.at:81/

Bluetooth is still not fix I am still using Pocket Bluetooth to connect to my PC(using USB Dongle).

I have had atleast 3 soft-reset yesterday thats after I install some of my program and seing some unusual thing.

So far everything seems to be stable right now I havent had any problem yet..

GPRS still not always on.. And Thanks for your software George my GPRS is now always on....

TO: George, I realized that if I set your software to like 2:30 h:m, it doesnt work for me even on my 1.60 ROM(before the upgrade)

Well I also upgraded my XDA2 to this ROM from Dangaard QTek 1.60.21. This ROM seems fine to me. The last soft reset that I had was three days ago during the installation process. The only thing that bothering me is that when I install an app the shortcuts will only show in programs folder after a soft reset.

For GPRS performance, it does not really matter since I am billed per kb.

Regarding bluetooth, I still have problems sending/recieving files to other devices like SE T610. On Qtek 1.60.21 I can send and recieve files from N3650, with this ROM I can send but the can no longer recieve files.

Overall this ROM is stable I think I'm gonna stick to it for a while.

I have never had such an unstable Rom, it has to be reset constantly and not because it slows down but because it just freezes altogether, very annoying when your on the phone. The best rom I ever had was one I got off the Club i-mate site last year, I can't remeber the details but I have this: ruu15283wwe.cdl... I have the file but cant load it now I have the T-Moble rom on the phone. I get "ERROR 120: COUNTRY ID ERROR" is there any way of getting this rom back on the phone, it was so stable and the radio was the best ever.

Hello,

After going through this whole thread, i have some idea of how to upgrade but i'm still not sure if this can be done. i currently hold this rom:

Rom Version : 1.03.00 USA
Radio Version: 1.05.14

and would like to upgrade to the latest T-Mobile 1.60.36WWE BUT with the radio version of 1.06.01 cuz as Georg mentioned, 1.10.00 radio rom that comes with 1.60.36WWE kinda sucks. Anyway i can do this?

If not, how do i just upgrade from O2 XDAII 1.03.00 USA to 1.60.36WWE? can someone point me to the correct zip file that you gurus made? thanx a million.

Walt,
Read Georg's post just a couple above yours. He has re-evaluated the 1.10 radio and finds it just as good as the 1.06.
My recommendation to you, for sake of simplicity is to just go ahead and upgrade to the new 1.60.36 ROM upgrade.
If this is not the way you interpret his post you could always just upgrade to the 1.60, which is what I'm running on my MDA II. I chose not to upgrade because there does not seem to be enough enhancements to upgrade. Wish they would finally get a ROM upgrade out that would fix Bluetooth, and other features that would be a legitimate upgrade. I have had my device since 11-03, and you would think that they would at least have the BT fixed by now, I mean it is not like the technology is not out there.
There I go bellyaching again about the best device I have ever owned

Excuse me for being dense...but I assume that all these posts do not relate to the newly announced WM2003 Second Edition?

If not, anybody have any idea on if/when we are likely to be able to upgrade our ROMS. This looks like a much more exciting/useful upgrade than 1.60 (or am I missing something and Second Edition got snuck into 1.60 ROMs??)

And before someone asks it, this is the way to upgrade from an O2:

Works only for upgrade from O2 (any version) to T-Mobile 1.60.36 WWE

Grtz,

Jos

Dear Jos,

After following your instruction, is that meant the upgrade for my O2 xda2 will only change the ROM to 1.60WWE and all the other settings will remain O2 (No T-mobile features, just O2???)

No, the O2 stuff will be lost.
If you want to keep that, you have to decode the radio_.nbf file with this command:

xda2nbftool -x radio_.nbf radio_.nba 0x12345678
xda2nbftool -so O2 -v Radio.nba
del radio_.nbf
ren radio_.nba radio_.nbf

After that, you copy the radio_.nbf file to a folder with an extracted O2 ROM and run the upgrade.
In this way, you keep the O2 and Asian stuff.

You also could decode the extended rom (the decode file is somewhere on this thread) and use er2003edit to modify it with the O2 stuff.

I tried to do only a radio upgrade with deleting the files ms_.nbf and NK.nbf. The upgrade started, but my XDA II got stuck in the bootloader, and I had to do a complete upgrade to get things solved.

You use the wrong convert file. This one is for a conversion from i-mate to T-Mobile, not for Dangaard (Qtek).

Use this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=311, should work.

Thanks Jos,

Is the original 1.52.00WWE available in this website?
I may also need for downgrading after this upgrade if anything happens to my device.

Thanks again.

Chris,

As far as I know, there is no update available yet from O2.

But you could make a backup from your current rom to a sd card.
Take a look here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=6392&highlight=backup+rom) and here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=4608&highlight=d2s).

Thanks very much Jos,

But I think I have to give up. The procedures are so complicated.

I would like to wait for something similar to OSImagetool for xda1.

And before someone asks it, this is the way to upgrade from an O2:

Works only for upgrade from O2 (any version) to T-Mobile 1.60.36 WWE

Grtz,

Jos

I tried this using your instructions. I get the following error when i double-click convert.bat:

WARNING: this does not look like a nbf header, possible you provided the wrong password

WARNING: checksum is not ok, possibly you provided the wrong password

Then it gives a bunch of unrecognized language on the command dialog that was opened up.

Then it asks to connect the device and hit any key to upgrade..

once the window for upgrade starts, it gives me a COUNTRY ID ERROR!!

I just purchased an O2 XDA II and I have the following in the device version:

ROM version : 1.52.00WWE
ROM Date: 10/23/03
Radio Version: 1.05.14
Protocol Version: 1337.14
ExtROM version: 1.52.82

Under identity:

Model NO. PH10B

Any suggestions on how to upgrade and get rid of the error? Also, when i click convert.bat, it says it is converting from Qtek to t-mobile ROM? :( :(

Thanks,

K

Kophosh,

Make sure you get the right upgrade ROM version from here (http://www.t-mobile.nl/global/media/zip/RUU16036WWE_T-Mobile_NL.exe).

The text about Dangaard is a mistake in the batch file. The conversion parameters are correct for O2. I uploaded the modified file with the right text to the forum, it's also attached.

You're the first one with problems.
Please try again and make sure you first extract the rom update to a new folder with Winzip.

I tested it out, works fine here.

Jos,

Thanks for your help. I think it was the ROM that i had downloaded earlier. It was corrupt.

Also, Jos, I have T-mobile here in the US. Thus, I don't want to hack into the ROM. But I would like to get the themes for the O2 ROM, such as Today's THeme, Dialpad.. etc.

How can i add those to my extended ROM? I have downladed the Extended ROM viewer from this post.

Thanks,

Kohposh

Thank you Jos, I finally did it !
How can I keep GPRS always-on ?
I deleted from extended ROM all T-Mobile specific files but I still don't have the always-on function. What should I do ?
Thanks,

No, it's not possible.

The ROM's are encoded. This is different for every version of HimaUpgradeUt.exe.

You can find more info here (http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/projects/xda/xdaii-update-format.html).

I have no idea where these files are in the windows directory. I know it can be done by changing the extended ROM.

Maybe someone else can help?
