As AT&T converts its old analog and TDMA 850 MHz network to GSM850, they have ceased any upgrades to the GSM1900 network originally put in place. Since the XDA/SX56 doesn't operate on GSM850 this means that your reception is as good as it will ever be. AT&T will apparently let you "upgrade" to a 850/1900 phone with fewer features - no smartphones on the upgrade list.
It could be worse. You could have paid top dollar for a new Motorola MPx200 GSM1900 Smartphone. On the other hand, Amazon just now offered me the SX56 as a "featured recommendation" for $550 with a $200 rebate...
