View Full Version : XDA2 volume slider hack
Des
1st June 2004, 01:27 AM
if you want use side slider on your XDA2 for something else then changing sound volume now you can do it (with some restrictions):
This utility unmap volume slider on MDA2/XDA2/iMate (and probably other PDAs).
Disclaimer:
By default side slider change system volume and can not be used for something else (only exeption is some games).
What it do:
This prog remove mapping of side slider on changin volume making possible to use it in other programs (scrolling pages in Haali Reader for example).
Installation:
Copy file unmap_volume.exe to "/Windows/startup" folder
soft-reset device
Uninstall:
delete file unmap_volume.exe from /Windows/startup
soft-reset device
How to map this slider in other programs/which programs are supported:
Side slider generates virtual-key codes 0x75 (equal to "F6" button) and 0x76 (equal to "F7" button). If your programm can use this buttons then it can use slider.
Is it possible to run programs by slider (like by ordinary application buttons)?:
No, maybe this feature will be implemented later.

This sounds like a useful trick - I never use the volume control, except accidentally while on a call  . Can anyone say what applications they've found to use this hack? I don't have a lot of extra software on my machine - how many of the built-in apps could use the slider to scroll? Perhaps one line at a time in Pocket IE?

Very nice Thank You!!
Ive managed to change the registry entry in WMP so I can use it to change tracks.
To make it truly useful though it will have show up in the button assignment window.
Thx again

unfortunately this hack can be used in very few apps (see readme.txt) but v.2 is coming soon :)
Main feature of v.2 is driver, that remaps unstandart vKey codes (0x75 and 0x76) to the standart "application-buttons" range, wich make possible to use "volumeup" and "volumedown" buttons like calendar/contacts/camera/record button. the code I've at this monent is not 100% stable, and configuration interface is far from user-friendly, but it is quite workable, so final version will be released shortly.

Just a question, Des. What registry settings are you changing or removing? A friend of mine has a PocketLOOX which has sliding buttons to be used for Up and Down - I would be keen to find out what settings he has got in the Registry...
Des

farnold this hack isn't registry tweak so it dosn't change, create or delete any registry keys. unlike PPC2002 in WM2003 handling of keys with vKey codes 0x75 and 0x76 is hardcoded in shell32.exe and current version of hack just rollback RegisterHotkey() maked in shell32.exe

i don't use microsoft reader so i can't tell you exactly, but if MS Reader is able to bind desired actions to application buttons (calendar/contacts/camera/record but NOT joystick/action) then most probably that you should be able to use volume slider in it (with next version of button remapper).

Hm, I think I will be left out then... I would think that SCROLL FOREWARD and SCROLL BACKWARD in MS Reader are nothing but JOYSTICK TOP and JOYSTICK BOTTOM ...
But that makes me thinking as well... you mentioned that you change something in shell32.exe... the PocketLOOX has a similar slider which does nothing but scrolling... maybe someone knows which function is required???

you mentioned that you change something in shell32.exe...
no i don't change anything in shell32.exe
let's make things a bit clearer: there is no problem to make volup/voldown dublicate joyUp/joyDown, but I'm not planning to include "per application profiles" in this version, so such remapping would be systemwide.
ps: why peoples are using M$ reader ? there are lot of e-book readers (iSilo, mobi pocket, uBook, Haali reader) that are (imho) much better than M$R, and there are converters from drm'ed .lit to open formats (plain text/xhtml/XML e.t.c.)... so WHY ? :)

No worries, mate - even I didn't say it, that's all I want the sliders to be used for in any apps :D

Because it's just the best program for reading a lot - I mean "best" when it comes to things like display quality, fonts and so on... and I don't have a problem with DRM, but probably 1,000 free eBooks in lit format... that should be enough for my life

er.. WTF?
BTT: why not add to this tool to allow the slider to be mapped to custom keys? PageUp/PageDown would seem like an obvious choice to me, making it instantly compatible with the majority of readers, but others might want it to be mapped to other keys. All the same, PocketQuake could have PgUp/PgDn mapped to weapon changes :D
I have to say I find the In-Call volume control indespensible - some phone calls come through quite loud, while some come through very quiet.

Ti uveren chto hochesh upgrade to T-Mobile 1.72? Is it already official release or you want to try BETA? If BETA - run from there ;)
Better find I-Mate 1.72 (official) - the fastest ROM i tried up to know...
As of how to upgrade - use http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/ER2003Edit to change the ROM Carreir ID to what you need for each of the roms included. More details can be found if you search the forum (ili mozesh poslat mne pm i ya postaraus tebe pomoch)

There is a button underneath a person's post, which says "pm" on it, like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/templates/XDAdevelopers/images/lang_english/icon_pm.gif
If you click this button it will send a "private message" (i.e. "pm") to the person who wrote the post.

i have too less free time to make remapper finished, but those of you, who can't wait can use this quick'n'dirty hack and wait for normal release :):
--------------------------------------
FOR USE WITH HIMALAYA ONLY
TESTED ON 1.66 ROM
--------------------------------------
Disclaimer:
this is NOT v.2 of volume slider remapper. this is patched original hardw.keyboard driver from O2 XDA2. it is modified to produce 0x26/0x28 (instead of 0x75/0x76 in original) vKey codes on volume slider, making it acts like JoyUp/JoyDown.
Advantages:
ability to scroll with slider in 99% apps (yes, it works with MS Reader, Pocket IE and so on).
Disadvantages:
slider completely duplicate JoyUP/Down and can't be used for anything else.
Installation:
copy keybddr.dll from this archive to /windows folder. preform soft-reset
Uninstallation:
rename keybddr.dll in /windows folder to keybddr.dl_ (or anything you like). preform soft-reset. delete keybddr.dl_ from /windows folder

Des, you legend!!! Good stuff... it works excellent!!! Even on my 1.60.44 ROM version...
Just one thing for others who want to install it. When you attempt to copy keybddr.dll you'll get error messages saying that you cannot overwrite the existing file. I got over that using the following steps:
- renaming the existing keybddr.dll to keybddr.dll-old and ignoring the error message displayed
- copying Des' keybddr.dll into the Windows directory
- soft reset

I can confirm that this works with the XDA1. I managed to change my PocketMVP key settings in the registry to use it. On the XDA1 only 0x75 is mapped as it only has one volume button.
Great work Des hope you can figure out an easier way of assigning this key to actions in a future version.
If anyone can figure out how to unmap the Phone keys that would be great too. :D

just unmapping (as you've asked). fyi phone buttons produce 0x72/0x73 vKeys (this is vKey codes for F3/F4 buttons, according to M$ docs).

Des,
If you could manage to map the phone buttons and the volume to the range C3, C4, C5, C6 then a simple registry hack will mean they can be assigned to progs in the control panel buttons dialog. ANy chance of giving this a go?

Hi Des!
I have been trying to get all buttons working under linux. At first I thought they were all connected to TSC2200 which in turn fires GPIO 7. But this is only correct for contacts, calendar, red and green. Power is connected to GPIO 0 directly. All other buttons don't do anything one could see with HaRET.
Does your research on the volume button indicate something on their hardware representation?
Thanks in advance

I've made my own version of volime slider hack. Unlike Des's it allows to map program execution to these buttons. Assignment is done through the control panel. Only program execution is supported. Commands like "close window" are partially implemented.
The other difference of my program is that when "Phone" application is active, these buttons behave like usual (i.e. modify volume slider).
This program should work on any PPC 2003 device. Other OS versions are not supported.
File can be downloaded from http://mamaich.kasone.com/imate/AddHotkeysImate.rar
Installation instructions:
Extract archive to \windows\startup folder on your device and reboot.
Uninstallation:
Rename \windows\startup\AddHotkeys.exe to AddHotkeys.exe1 (i.e change file extension), reboot. You'll get message that AddHotkeys.exe1 cannot be run (its ok). Then delete \windows\startup\AddHotkeys.exe1
I've uploaded a set of small programs designed to be assigned to these volume buttons:
http://mamaich.kasone.com/imate/keyaddons.rar
Closer.exe - it would simulate pressing on Ok/Close button in a fullscreen window
SimUp.exe - simulates pressing joystick up
SimDown.exe - simulates pressing joystick down.
To install you should extract these files to "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\" directory (or any of its subdirectories, i recommend creating one). If you are using an non-english OS you should extract to the localized directory, like "\Windows\Меню Пуск\Программы" for Russian. To assign these programs go to control panel -> buttons, and map these programs to any button you like.
P.S. if you are using "unmapPhoneButtons.zip", you should run that program before my AddHotkeys.exe.
2 Des: I can give you my source code if you are interested.

mamaich, that is just marvelous!!! I installed it and it's just a beauty :D :D :D
May I ask you if it would be possible to have some more of the small programs you added:
- TAB as in pressing the tabulator
- BACKSPACE to delete the character left of the cursor position
- SIM LEFT
- SIM RIGHT
That would bring me as close to a single handed use as I can imagine...

I mapped volume button to my XDA1 and it works too , but after i tryed
to set programm to imitate up-down control like Software Action Control
from http://www.tillanosoft.com/ce/sac.html, it works only with down press, imitation of "up" don't works becouse this programm calculate some delay of pressed button to imitate "up" . To Mamaich : Will you able to test your programm with delayed pressed "Press&hold" volume button ?

2 iggy: when phone app is running, the volume slider adjust volume and ignores programs mapped to it. This is by design. Later I (or maybe Des) will make it change volume only when the call is in progress.
2 k_dima: currently long pressing of buttons is not implemented. As far as I know Des is working on it.

Thanks mamaich for the answer. What I was hoping for is a combination of your hack and des. With des's hack the volume button XDA does not control the phone volume even in phone mode (that is great for me because the XDA only has one volume button so if you volume is say 4 or 3 and you need to lower the volume you first have to raise the volume to get to a lower volume (this is really stupid). Second the location of the button means I am accidently every time. So I like that the volume button does not work at all and I like your hack where I can set it to another piece of software (but yours still control the volume while in phone mode. Any possibilities.

For Your Information
I have just installed Battery Pack Pro(BPP) and it conflicts with the volume
slider mapper application addhotkeys.exe.
BPP has a new app called Power buttons enbaling mapping of a tap and hold on each of the four main app buttons. However when the addhotkeys.exe is added Power buttons app displays the 6 buttons shifted out of secequnece. Thus
Displayed button acutal button
Calender not mappable
Contacts not mappalble
Camera Calander button
Record contacts button
up camera button
down record button
I couldn't work out how to change the registery keys to put them back in the correct sequence and/or enable the volume slider mapper. So I uninstalled the addhotkeys hack and then deleted the keys 40c5 & 40C6

i've made my own version that works fine on my wallaby (wm2003se).
it needs some more improvements so you'll have to wait a couple of days for the final release :)

It's done. You can assign any prog to Volume Button on wm2003se.
On Wallaby you can use both properties: VolumeUp and VolumeDown - os gives different codes for button push and release, so you can choose what action should run programs :)
Test it and give your opinion :)

I uninstalled http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus_t.html and mapped the up volume to your program and it only would adjust the volume still.
I have an new PDA2.
I wanted to use your program because http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus_t.html runs in the background so I can not use my ScreenLock program to save batteries and keep accidental things from happening while it is in the case.
The screenlock needs two buttons to be pressed before it unlocks.

this software is for wm2003se from the kitchen, because it doesn't support volume buttons (they aren't mapped to anything).
i plan to add some config to change the code of any button (not only volume) and to assign any progs to it.
looks like netfront does'n like the Preview button when posting here ;)
http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus_t.html runs in the background so I can not use my ScreenLock program
it doesn't work, because it's running in the background? i don't get it ;)

If an alarm goes off while the screen is locked while the other program for buttons and volume slider is installed, you can not unlock the device by pressing the record and Calendar button at the same time. The only way to unlock it is to reset.

Cheesus,
Sorry to be ignorant, but I am not sure how to load the MapVolumeSE.exe. I have an SX66 with WM2003SE. I copied the exe to the My Documents folder on the device and tried to execute it but nothing happens. Will it work on the HTC Blue Angels? If so, what the heck am I doing wrong? Thanks.
