This seems to be the most commonly asked question on this forum "Why can't I use my XDA with PPC 2003 as a modem". Now I have read a lot of posts talking about it and I realize it can be done with PPC 2002 and not 2003. Why? Is it something that microsoft blocked? Has no one written the software or has it just not been included in people's roms? I was wondering if someone can explain to me the logistics why you can't use XDA as a modem or unlock it in PPC 2003. Also if anyone knows of a software I can purchase to use my XDA as a modem I am all ears. Thanks again.

First the instructions on setting up the modem were great, but where do I get the two files I need. Second the "upgrade" is acctually a drastic downgrade. Your link told me I should upgrade to
ROM version: 3.20.06 ENG
ROM date: 07/30/03
Radio: 4.21
Protocol: 32S54

This is very outdated. I am currently running
Rom version: 4.01.00
ROM date: 10/27/03
Radio Version: 6.25.02
Protocol version: 324e4

I don't mean to be condescending, but is the version you are talking about PPC 2002 or 2003? Also Do you know the difference bettween the two rom versions I just listed. Thanks.

I don't know how to set the wireless modem, but I know that 3.xx.xx are 2002 versions and 4.xx.xx, R.xx.xx and A.xx.xx are WM2003 ones! 8)

In first place the ROM 4.01.00 have in the folder program the Wireless Modem?
If they Modem it is there you does not need to do upgrade. You OK

The Upgrade that I'm suggested is the original end last Rom from Asia XDA.

The rom 4.01.00 is the T Mobile vession.

The software you need is in this line [drive]

Wireless Modem
How to use Wireless Modem for USB. - [html] [doc] [driver]

download the drive from this place.

josedias (or anyone that can do so),
Can you post the wmodem.exe application from the XDAII, and possibly a registry snapshot (http://www.geocities.com/s_k_s_k_s_kru/util.html#ss)?
Thanks!

Does the WirelessModem_USB_files.zip works on XDA I and PocketPC2003? I'm currently using the wireless modem from the Special Edition 1.2, but intend to upgrade to the T-Mobile 2003 version, just need to ensure I can still have modem capability. Please advise. Thanks.

That was the original question I asked when I started this thread and I really don't think it's possible. There is no app built into 2003 for a modem.

josedias,
I've already read those instructions. They are all for the XDA II, and they refer to a version of WMODEM.EXE that is not in any of the XDA I ROMS. This version of WMODEM.EXE has the option for USB connection, while the XDA I versions do not. That's why I would like for someone to post a copy of the actual file "WMODEM.EXE" from their XDA II, along with a snapshot of the registry so we can analyze the differences. Then we can use the USB Dialer that you posted. Can you copy this file from your XDA II? It should be in \Windows\wmodem.exe.
Thanks!
Shawn

The file you downloaded was for xdaII.
There is no software for XDA PPC 2003 only PPC 2002

gunsandroses,
The German WM2003 ROMs have WMODEM that (I believe) works with the English versions. However, this version of WMODEM only supports serial and IrDA, just like the English version of the PPC2002 ROMs. I have neither a serial port or IrDA on my laptop, though, so I can't tell you if it actually works with the PC. You can find this German version of WMODEM on this forum.

i have german wmodem programm, but it didnt work. when i started wmodem irda my ir port on pc shows that connection is established, but when i tried to dial the number, according the instruction, my pc says - there is no modem, or it not instaled. so it seems to be that xda didnt recognized as a modem. but when i stoped wmodem the connection between xda and pc stoped too. i dodnt understand why my pc could not use the modem of xda????? my be, when i tune and tweek my xp i turn off some services, that need to be run for that? but my sonyerricson t610 worked great!

this version of WMODEM only supports serial and IrDA,
auburnham,
Why can it only support IRDA or serial connetions? The software gives you the option to connect USB and Bluetooth. Also the instructions listed with the dowload explain how to connect through USB. Have you ever successfully made this connection with a desktop and Serial port? Where did you buy a serial wire? Thanks again.

Ross,
Here is what I see when I run the German WMODEM application:
http://auburnham.com/temp/wmodem_ger.jpg
And this is what I see when I run the XDA II version of WMODEM:
http://auburnham.com/temp/wmodem2.jpg

Although I was unsuccessful at getting the XDA II version to work with the XDA I through USB connection, there isn't even an option for USB in the German version. Do you have different results?

I haven't tried the German version with a desktop, but I'll try that soon and let you know the results. I have an O2 serial "sync cable" I got on E-Bay.

I was using the XDAII software. I don't own a laptop yet so unfortunately I don't have an IRDA port to test the German XDA software. Where did you find it anyway?

2.josedias, what does it mean when your instructions say to replace "a line of code" with the operator's APN name?
Thanks guys

How can I find out the APN of my service provider. I am afraid to call them because i am not paying for my gprs service (with t-mobile america you can connect to wap.voicestream.com for free). Whatr do you think I should do?

Ross,
I found the German WMODEM somewhere on this forum. The attached file should be it.
Use wap.voicestream.com for your APN and see if that works.

Unfortunately I don't have an infrared port or a serial cable. Have you had any luck with your cable?

auburnham

I tried to use the German WMODEM last night with my PC and had no luck. I followed the instructions at the O2 site and it didn't work. I then just tried querying the modem in a terminal, and although the commands were registering in the WMODEM log, I got no response.
Has anyone used WMODEM successfully with WM2003?
