After all my desparate requests for help and numerous re-upgrades I finally downgraded back all the way to 1.52!!
And guess what: I have sound again, no hardware problem!! I think this proves that there is a very nasty bug in Widcomm.
After bumping into this huge stone for once, guess what: I'll try to upgrade again to 1.72 ha,ha.
P.S. Do not restore your latest backup, because the bug is still in there, but the one before.
