View Full Version : Pocket Plus and Xda II Lockups (1.66 ROM)

We have noted some strange locking up of our Xda II's over on the MTekk forums requiring a hard reset. We have a number of threads running at the moment but the main one is here (http://www.mtekk.com.au/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3658&start=10&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=).

I have been in touch with Spb about this and they inform me it is actually an HTC and MS issue. Below is their email response.

Hello David,
We do our best to fix this problem ASAP. We work hard with HTC and
Microsoft now on this problem.
But this problem occurs not only with Spb Pocket Plus but with other
programs too.
We have feedback from HTC and Microsoft about that (sorry, I cannot
disclosure more
details since it is information obtained from our partners).

So I am not sure we will be able to fix it in Spb Pocket Plus - probably
HTC will fix it in their ROM.
Spb Pocket Plus does not use any undocumented functions that can cause
such behavior.

Probably we will disable running Spb Pocket Plus on these devices at all
until HTC fixes this bug in ROM

Pocket Plus 1.x is not available online now but I can send it to you if you want via e-mail.

If you bought Pocket Plus 2.x and can't use it, you can always ask for refund.

If you have any questions, please, don't hesitate to contact me.

It appears as though this issue could also be happening with version 1 of Pocket Plus on the 1.66 ROM (and some 1.72 ROM's too).

Thought you guys might like to know. Generally I find Spb products to be good, but it appears as though Spb are being blamed for this issue. I think this email help point the finger in the right direction.

Hi djwhyte

This is some strange stuff as I've been running Pocket Plus 2.0 for a few months and have recently installed 2.1 (just for the hell of it I think its only a VGA update from what I can see)... but have not had any problems on my XDA II before, hear are my details of my device if this helps:

ROM Version: 1.66.00WWE
ROM Date: 02/20/04
Radio Version: 1.08.00
Protocol Version: 1337.18
ExtROM Version: 1.66.165

The only thing I could think that I MIGHT be doing diferent is that I do not use the today screen pluging (I use all other features like repeating allarms and task mannager!) At the begining I did use the today screen and do not recall any problems as well I've taken it off because my today screen was getting to cluttered with other software I am running.

Not sure if this is going to help you but have to tired installing Pocket Plus with NO other applications installed after a hard reset? It might be a conflict with other software or even a totaly other product causing the problem? Not sure hope this can help you!

Regards
Fudge!

Hey thanks for info guys.

I will have to try without the today screen pluggin and see if makes any difference.

Boybi, your wifes Xda II which is on the 1.66 ROM, does it have the today screen plugin enabled?

is the Today Plugin the one where you can put battery and memory bars, and put some icons? if yes, then its enabled.

I was wondering what was the lockup caused by. I uninstalled the SPB GPRS and SPB Pocket Plus and now it's ok. No more lockup. I had to hard reset, but couldn't initial find the problem until the trial expired, weird. I guess that's why I bought it.

djwhyte

I find GPRS monitor is OK!!

I have a feeling the Today plugin is the cause as I have had no such crashes since I installed it again with the today screen disabled. What part of it I don't know though.

Boybi, which icons, sliders does your wife have enabled on the plugin?

One thing to note on this, is that SPB update their software silently and don't tell ya about it.

So get the latest build of PocketPlus and try again.

Ooooh Sorry Boybi, I hope I didn't curse you but that sounds like the lockup.

I have been running sweetly for three days without the Today screen plugin for PP2. How long did your wife have the Today screen showing before it locked up? Days? Weeks?

Cheers,
Dave

DJWHYTE,

im using pocket plus ver 2.1 on a 1.66 ROM XDA II, just installed it 24 hours ago, no problems so far.

All featured ITEMS enabled, Today Plug-in, File Explorer enhancements, Pocket IE enhancement, Looping Alarm, etc..

Im very disturbed by what I just read in this thread, although I have experienced 1 LOCKUP, it happened while SPB Pocket Plus was NOT YET installed.

Can anyone please advise HOW LONG was the average time FROM installation of pocket plus DID the LOCKUP occur? and what your POCKET PLUS version and ROM versions are?

Certainly would put most of us at ease.

With my previous 1.66ITA it worked for about 3 months without troubles (PP 2.0 first and 2.1 later) .

After the upgrade to 1.72.04ITA no chance to install it anymore; it freezes and the only way out is hard resetting.
Spb team says that they are working on it... hope so, otherwise I will claim for my money back.

My experience up to now is that PP is white or black: it works or not, at all. In your case it works, so I would not worry too much...

Good, now I can sleep better knowing my XDA 2 will still turn on tomorrow when I wake up. Thanks DAVE.

Any other observations out there?

I may DREAM better if there are, hehehe. :D

Ever since I installed the Spb PocketPlus ver 1.x and onward I have had that problem. It occurs rarely but often enough to annoy me (1-2 times/month). It seems to make no difference if I disable the Today screen. I have removed it now. I don't have much other software on it, except for Destinator 3 and a painting program. I won't return to PocketPlus until the issue is solved.

The italian localized 2.1 will not work on the 1.72 ROM, to make it works you need to install the 2.0 and after it the 2.1.
No problems at all

Maybe this could help. A few weeks back i installed spb pocket plus 2.x, it locked up on me the third day and i had to do a hard reset. So i reinstalled the whole thing, removed any programs that came up on my activesync ADD/REMOVE list on my desktop.

I reinstalled pocketplus, with the today screen plugin enabled, BUT i disabled the CLOSE Button in the pocket plus options. No problems for the past 2 weeks.

I also noticed that, with the CLOSE button enabled on the pocket plus, my SMS messages get sent more than once. Although the close button is very handy, i just disabled it, and put an icon for Running Programs in my SPB plugin.

May i ask others to try this, and see if it works for them. I also asked my friend, who is also using an XDA2 to do the same, since he made 3 hard resets in 4 days. After that, no problems also.

Other apps i have are:

Real ONE player
RingtoneX
Pacman
Atraware games
Microsoft games
Microsoft entertainment Pack.

Thanks

I don't think there's any problem with Pocket Plus. I've been using different versions of Pocket Plus with the today plug-in for many months now and Pocket Plus is pretty stable. My XDA II ROM is version 1.60. The problem is with ROM version 1.66. If there had been a problem with Pocket Plus, then all or at least most ROM versions should have been affected. But that is not the case. The problem occurs in ROM version 1.66 even on devices without Pocket Plus. So the only logical conclusion is that the problem is with ROM version 1.66, not with Pocket Plus.

djwhyte
9th September 2004, 05:35 PM
Ermmm....Spb admitted the problem and I (personally) have only seen this problem in 1.60.

I am not bagging Spb. I think they are a fine company and infact I praised them just yesterday at MTekk. If you read the email I quoted you will see this problem is being caused by the Xda II firmware, which was obviously changed for the 1.66 release!!!

Dear i3oyi3astos, I have this problem too!
After installing Pocket Plus 2.0, I realized every time I send an SMS, it goes twice (amsot 70 or 80% of the time), and I found the solution was to disable the "close" feature.

Note that this problem appeared the next day I installed the Sbp Pocket Plus 2.0. However, my brother-in-low had the same device (Imate), and he installed Pocket Plus too, and he got the doublicate SMS problem after about 5 or 6 days!!! then he disabled the "close" feature to solve the issue.

Any idea how to keep the "close" feature and avoid doublicate SMS?

Forgot to mention it earlier!
My Rom Version: 1.72.00WWE
Rom Date: 15 March 2004
Radio Ver: 1.14.00
Protocol Ver: 1337.24
ExtROM Ver: 1.72.810

However, even if I install Pocket Plus after hard reset with no other software, still this doublicate SMS problem is there!

I have two XDA II (rom 1.66) and both have hard reset and battery drain in the past two days (one was even on the charger)... I am glad to find out that it seems to be Pocket Plus. I currently have it installed on both units but will uninstall as soon as I finish this post. Thanks to these forums for quick answers... I hope XDA or Spb gets this fixed soon.

Hello to all..

Used for two or three months battery pack pro and all are strong and safe, never hard reset...

After that i change for pocket plus 2.0 and after 2.1 and the strange hard reset problem occurs...

This happened in the summer holidays and till two weeks ago i was confused because i try to install one software after another and the xdaII continue to hang, two o three times a week.

Now i stop using spb, for battol and till now (1 month till now) no hard reset.

Last thing is i tryed with different roms version, from 160, 166 and now 172 and for me the problem is only for this last version...

better waityng for a solution, or do a accurate bK.

my friend's 1.66rom XDA2 still keeps on hard resetting and the battery drains fast despite not installing pocket plus after the hard reset! can it be the pocketzenphone? this together with sprite backup (which incidentally also installed PocketMon) are the only 3rd party apps installed in her XDA2!

My XDA II has both Pocket Plus and PocketZenPhone installed. And I have never experienced any problem. My ROM version is 1.60. It used to be an earlier version (I can't remember the exact version number). But I never had any problems then either. I have used all Pocket Plus versions from 1.3 to 2.1 and never encountered a single problem.

As I've mentioned earlier, I had no problems with Sbp Pocket Plus at all except that it sends double SMS every time I send a message (only if "close" feature is on).
I did not have Hard reset problem until now. I have been using it for the past 4 or 5 months.
Note that I am using Sbp Pocket Plus 2.0 (not 2.1), the only difference between them (as far as I know), is that the newer version supports landscape view for Windows 2003 SE.

This happened with my imate 4 months ago when I was updating it to 1.72, at that time, it was not responding even to hard reset. I had again done the update process to 1.72 which took about 45 minutes, then my imate was OK!
I guess my first update did not go well, or something went wrong, and phone did not respond at all. You might need to do the same thing even the cause of this problem is not related to upgrade!
Hope this helps.

I'm using ROM Version 1.72.01GER and also had several hardresets. Annoyed by that I found my way to this forum. I just deactivated the close button and the memory-cards free space indicator in the today screen of pocketplus 2.1. Hope this will solve my problem (recurrent lock ups and the sms problem). At least I now know, why the space indicators haven't been available in version 2.2 of spb-pp ;) So far so good - I'll keep an eye on that.

Just to add to the confusion - my device has displayed the hard reset behaviour twice in the last week after running fine for a couple of months. And guess what, I don't have Pocket Plus installed. I have never seen the duplicate SMS problem, so that has to be a Pocket Plus/xda2 feature.

I read elsewhere that it may be caused by a today plugin that monitors the free space on your SD card. In my case, this was Battery Pack Pro (1.1.1), which I haven't re-installed. There doesn't appear to be a reason for needing to do the hard reset, in both cases I wasn't doing anything on my device and realised the thing had hung when it would just not turn on. I did notice that the phone LED still blinks until you attempt a soft reset (which gets you nowhere), after which the entire device appears dead until you pull out the battery. The last time it did this, the battery was so drained, it would not power my SIM card until it had charged up a little bit. Bluetooth was switched off.
Since not reinstalling Battery Pack, it appears stable. However, I think it's unfair of me to say that as it ran fine for two months before. I'll give it a couple more weeks to see if the problem really is down to that. I miss Battery Pack lots though - need the icon launcher, need the battery meter, quick access to alarm clocks, etc. etc.

Rom was and always has been 1.66 when this was happening. For testing, I should have stayed on 1.66 I know, but I upgraded to ROM 1.72 two days ago. I don't feel that the ROM version is the issue though looking at everyone else's experiences.

So are we coming to a consensus yet? I don't think the make of software is the problem, more trying to access some bit of the hardware is causing problems.

Can anyone categorically say that they have removed this feature from their today screen and are getting no problems (with either Pocket Plus or Battery Pack)?

I'd like to but it seems I wasn't getting any problems until recently. I'm scared to do it now because I need my phone for business and can't spend yet another day out of contact and with no GPS. Maybe I need to sort out Bluetooth syncing then I can bring my laptop with me and recover!

rgds,
Alex.

I have has this problem (Power out, lock up, then only hard resest) before with Pocket WinC (Using wifi-SDIO
card).
My girlfriend and I each have Pocket plus on 1.72, she does not have this hard reset battery drain issue, she also does NOT have an sd card. My amateurish conlcusion is that this has something to do with softwares that monitors/ works with the sdio slot. I have disabled the montior and will report back if this fixes the problem.
