Hi, there:
I'm a newbie from china mainland, and I'm using a dopod696 which I think is an oemed xda II. the rom information about it like this:
ROM: 1.66.07CHS
ROM date: 02/23/04
Radio: 1.15.00
Protocol: 1337.25
ExtRom: 1.66.225
and its Pocket PC version is 4.20.0(build 13252)
I have these questions: is it running wm2k3 or wm2k3se and how can I tell? is there any newer CHS rom available?(dopod's technical support is very poor.) can I use XDATools to backup its rom? and who actually built these roms? Microsoft or the device manufacturer?

Hi, Zhoudan.

AFAIK.
You have a newest XDAII (Chinese version isn.t ??) with OS Windows Mobile 2003 Service Pack 1.
WM2003SE is Pocket PC version 4.21.
ROM built by Device Manufacturer (Vendor like O2, I-Mate, Qtekk or T-Mobile), sorry i do not know you vendor (Dopod ???), may be they are sub vendor from O2.
Microsoft is support OS only.

That's wrong. Until now there is no WM2003 SE available for the XDA II.....

WM2003SE is not come out yet, wait untill the end of the year !!.
update to 1.72 rom, you will get WM2003sp2 with benefit increase battery lifetime, bluetooth customization, .....
afaik, not chinese version in 1.72 rom.

i heard O2 will make 1.72 rom which WM2003SE included, but i am not sure :?: :?:

Alex,

Use the attached tool 'ntrw.exe' to extract the ROM image in SD card:
1. Insert the SD card containing the ROM into a card reader
2. If the card reader drive is 'X:\' under your Windows, then run:
ntrw.exe read xda2_166_cht_image.nb1 x:
(where the 'xda2_166_cht_image.nb1' will be filename of the captured ROM, it can be whatever you like)

Then, you can find an extracted ROM file under the working directory.

I have PM you with my email address. Could you please send me the ROM file, please? Or, you might upload it to ftp.xda-developers.com and inform me.

Thanks for your uploaded files VERY MUCH! I have upgraded my XDA II to 1.66 CHT successfully!

The zip file you uploaded is actually the ROM file (I used Hex Editor to open it). You can just rename it to any new name with extension 'nbf'. Then, you can flash it to any XDA II device. (Actually you can directly use that to flash)

Help, I have follow the step from the article your mention to flash the ROM but each time I got the error of :

Section = 1
Not allow
update!....

Please help. BTW can you flash you CHT1.66 into a 128 or 256 SD Card so that I don't need to the CEROM file again.

As the symptom you mentioned, probably it could not be flashed due to wrong file header in the ROM file. Did you first backup your original ROM, then copy the header of the original ROM (copy the first 190 segments with HexEditor) to the new ROM to be flashed? If not, then try again. Following is another article for steps of flashing ROM (flashing steps can be applied to XDA II):
