Success !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone of you tried this on a Dutch MDA Compact? If it works, I can buy the sim-locked version from T-Mobile and unlock it this way. It's (much) cheaper compared to the I-Mate Jam, which even isn't avaiable yet (from Expansys).

As far as I can tell now, the upgrade from Simlocked (Dutch) T-Mobile English to the new rom worked. I got to 100%, I got to the failed message, and after rebooting, I do now have Ricardo's ROM on the device. It did not unlock the device though!!!

I thought the simlock would be a part of the ROM and if you're able to overwrite it with an unlocked ROM, then the device could be unlocked. Obviously that was wishful thinking... I hope the experts here can still unlock it somehow.

Hi,
i want to say thanks to everybody worked on the english ROM after we failed totally. I want to say also thanks to the customers who didnt returned. I want to say sorry to the customers who returned.
Kta sent me first the mail and he said he did it together with Ricardo. I send him now a compact for free. But because of i think a lot of people worked on it i think its unfair that i dont give the other guys something too. So everybody who posted in this thread will get 2% less for the next 3 orders at nowicom if he send us his xda-dev. nickname in the order.
thanks

I noticed mda compact long ago and have chosen to buy it when it comes to market. With english rom. So I was very unhappy seeing shipment postponed at expansys. After that I agreed to buy german version from nowicom because of promissed easy change rom to english.
But then link with english upgrade didn't show up and I was again in wxpansys waters.
But I also carefuly observed conversation on this thread from the very beginning! Every single post from ordering, phone expectation, mda first impressions, english rom link not showing, and now sucessful rom building and booting.
It was VERY interesting (one could film a thriller :)). Also I was very happy seeing mr nowicom trying to help new customers. So, I was little bit dissapointed to see some inpatient us/uk customers returning their phones (especially now that english rom upgrade is solved).
I must say mr. nowicom is really up to his word offering kta new device. Regards!
After all, I think I will order mda compact from nowicom.
Greetings to all of you guys,

Any help! thank's
@ MADDS and GDA72 - how did you solve this problem in the end?
I've got the latest version of ntrw.exe and I still get the same error.
I'm using Win XP Home.

Who did the actual work?
Perhaps they should both get rewards as Nowicom will sell hundreds of units with this patch.

I sincerely hope Riccardo gets one too. After all, he was the one willing to sacrifice his MDA for the good of us all. OK, KTA did a lot of hacking, but Riccardo had the most to lose...

Count me on the english rom mda compact! :)
This is the ntrw that works
The english rom i used was the one from webpanel.ru
I replaced the first 416 bytes, flashed the sd card and then to the compact rom.
Thank's to all.

7th December 2004, 04:58 PM
So which files should we use for the English ROM, Ricardo's (on xda-dev ftp) or webpanel's?
How many bytes do we need to replace 416 or 200?
Thanks for your help.
7th December 2004, 05:00 PM
And further to my questions above, can I use a 1GB SD CARD instead of 256MB?

Both work, but in my case i made it with webpanel.ru.
I changed the first 416 bytes, some only change 220 bytes.

This is a process that can damage your card (erase the "bios" of the card)
so it's up to you to decide.
It's suposed to work with any card from 128mb up.
7th December 2004, 07:02 PM
madds, thanks for your reply. Doesn't the webpanel file has the first bytes replaced already?
madds
7th December 2004, 07:48 PM
Hi,
yes indeed they already changed these first bytes but it seems that these changes are required due to some changes in the rom.
It's an easy step.
Only copy and paste!

Hy guys,
good to see that it works for you. I should have my Magician from Nowicom on Friday.
One only final question on which I'm getting a bit confused: I hear the ROM upgrade and the extended ROM upgrades....
1. Can you clarify whether there are any further steps that the ones listed in this thread to have everything updated to UK?
2. If so, can you please provide the pertinent information?
Thanks again,

Belgo PDA,use 256 mb SD caed, take Riccardo ROM file, add by HEX editor first 416 byte from your original seved ROM and you will have perfectly working English WM2003SE and English Extended ROM programs. Everything will be in English, everything…. :)

hello, when in insert the sd car on my device (before i copy the rom into my sd card with the ntrw) but my device don't want to flash my german rom.
can someone can help me ?
my sd card is 256 megs
8th December 2004, 04:54 AM
Does webpanel's file has the English Extended ROM as well? I see huge size difference between Riccardo's and webpanel's file sizes.
8th December 2004, 10:19 AM
Sorry but i am a newbee. I have the MDA from Nowicom, downloaded the files but are very scared to do something wrong.
May be stupid but i don't know what an HEX editor is and where to get one.
Also i have no idea how to count the first 220 bytes ??
Thanks for your understanding and help.
8th December 2004, 11:35 AM
The hexeditor is with the files you downloaded (hexeditorfull.exe). That is an installation file. So you run the exe and this will install hex editor on your computer.
You don't have to count the bytes. Start highlighting the contents of the file from the very top (you don't have to understand the conent). At the bootom right corner, the program wil tell you how many bytes you have selected.
Then use the usual copy and paste to replace the header.

Thank you very much for your help.
One last question : i am used to have my menus in English but my T9 language in French in my other Smartphones SPV 200 and SDA. I cannot compute in another language than English, but need too much to write in French.
Now with the German OS i have the luck to be able to choose my T9 language from English, French, German and some other languages.
Can anyone who installed the English ROM confirm that the language choices in the Intelli Pad T9 are still available, or is it now exclusively English ??
Why is the MDA not as easy to change OS languages and T9 languages than the SDA, this was done in one second, isn't it the same Windows ?
Thank you again.

I am in waiting for the Dutch T-Mobile MDA Compact. I have read this topic and I understand that it is posible to change the OS to other language. In this case, from German to English.
However, I am still wondering if this can UNLOCK the MDA Compact (could use any SIM)?
Can any one make it clear to me which part decide the SIM will be locked or unlocked: Bootloader? or ROM? or anything else? Who lock it: Manufacturer? Provider (T-Mobile)?
If it is in ROM, could we make a back up from a "SIM-locked FREE" machine then restore it to the SIM-locked machine?
Wiz
8th December 2004, 05:08 PM
Harry, as far as I know, the "lock" status is contained in the radio part, and not in the ROM.
If you order a Dutch MDA Compact, your operating system will English, but teh MDA will also be locked. Until someone here develops a new XDA unlock tool, we can only wait I'm afraid (or pay 120 euros)
8th December 2004, 05:21 PM
OK, I am not a chicken, now that i know that French is available in the T 9 I go for it...first problem, no problem to transfer the ROM to the SD, put the SD into the card reader...file does not exists...ntrw read geman.nb1 g:....Could not open German.nb1 -- The system cannot find the file specified
What now ?? Completely lost ans scared even more than before, who can help please
I was told by Nowicom that the operation was so easy and done in a minute, am I that stupid.

Nope jpa, you must copy the header of the german ROM (MDA) on the header of the english ROM (Ricardo).

Hi everyone,
I am still stuck at the first step! :((
I disabled the USB in Active Sync.
I power+photo+reset on my Compact (German from Nowicom).
I have a 128mb formatted SD in it.
I connected my Compact and launched romupdate.exe.
I selected the USB port, but alas, all I get at this point is a window in romupdate that writes CLIENTCLIENTCLIENTCLIENT and on which I cannot write anything.
Can you please tell me what could be wrong?
Thank you.

Y'all are a motley bunch of characters...
I bought a Magician (MDA Compact) in Germany the other day and I've been using it auf Deutsch with my US-based T-Mobile SIM ever since. I want to flash it to English but before I do I would like some feedback from some users who have already. I'm gunshy because my MDA III has that first Imate english ROM and the Bluetooth stack is a POS! It wastes the battery in my Ericsson HBH-30 in notime! And, it sounds like crud to boot! Back on my new Magician it again works like a charm.
What is the radio version when using Ricardo's ROM? My current (standard) versions are: (and they are totally stable)
ROM-Version: 1.01.01 GER
Rom-Date 10/21/04
Radio-Version: 1.00.10
Protocol-Version: 1337.36
ExtROM-Version: 1.01.120 GER

I must be the most unlucky guy in the world.
After all the help i received from the nice guys on this forum i managed to copy the German ROM, get it on the PC, replace the first 220 bytes, get it back on a SD and back in the MDA...now it locks on SERIAL V1 since ages, refusing to do whatsoever..
I am not computing expert BUT there has to be something wrong with the whole thing :
How can a German ROM of 240 MB be efficiently replaced by an English 121 MB ROM ?? Are we loosing the half of the fonctionallity ?? Where are the other 120 MB gone ???
Can someone explain ? Meantime i will re-format my SD for the 5th time, copy the new ROM on it and keep trying.
I guess that learning German would have been faster than flashing this thing !!!

1st thing : don't format the SD card. You must use the same SD card to save you german rom and after to put your english rom with ntry without formating your SD after the 1st step.
Conerning the size, this is not a problem as there is more blanks on the english rom.

I'm going to be getting an MDA Compact in the next few days and am studying up on how to do this. I'm confused about one thing. After you copy the German ROM from the SD card to your harddrive, do you delete the German ROM off the SD card before copying the fixed English ROM onto it or do you leave it as it is? Is it overwritten?
9th December 2004, 09:17 AM
no, you overwrite.
2tired
9th December 2004, 09:26 AM
So I assume that you would have to rename the English ROM before it is copied to the SD card to have the same name as the German ROM so that it would be overwritten?
Another question, how is everyone's English ROM functioning so far? Any problems?
jpa
9th December 2004, 09:29 AM
no, you don't need to rename it. Ntry will do the job.
English rom worls fine.

After connecting your MDA to the PC through the USB in boot loader mode and having your SD card inserted into the MDA, you run romupdate.exe.
3. Then choose the USB connection in the connection settings of romupdate.exe window and click on ok. After that a terminal window will popup in that window.
4. Type d2s and press enter. Your MDA will start copying the ROM to the sd card. The screen of your MDA will be dark (no light), but you will see it counting up to 100%. When it reaches 100% it will say it is calculating the checksum. Give it some time till its done and it will say checksum ok.

After trying many times, I finally got to the point when I flashed the English ROM to my Jam in Bootloader mode.
I get "Checksum failed - Flashing failed" as I am supposed to, but now I cannot Soft reset!!
I tried everything, Soft reset, Hard reset, taking the battery off but it wont take me off bootloader mode.
Everytime it takes me back to the dark screen with Serial V1.00.
What should I do at this point?
Thanks.

for french guys who have difficulties to understand english I sent on the ftp server a french doc with all the process to flash the english rom (with screen capture). go to the Magician directory and download MethodeMajCompact.zip
http://www.nowicom.com/dl/mda_compact_upd_en_2.zip

I made a backup of the english ROM which is 64MB the exact size of the ROM its better than the ROM listed in the ftp. If you want me I can upload it to the ftp. If I compress it, it will probably be an around 30MB file with the full English ROM.
So let me know if you will need this file.
Also I managed to get a copy in .nb1 file format of the extended ROM so if any of the Developers could help us decode this file then we will be able to make our own version of the Extended ROM like people with XDA II's managed to make one.

It looks like the imate JAM started to ship today. Why not start off the extended ROM exercise using the imate's extended ROM.
Also, if we use the imate JAM ROM, will that remove the T-Mobile splash screen when we switch on the phone?

I have succesfully flashed the English ROM onto my German MDA compact.
Everything went fine, there's only one problem: Bluetooth is not working anymore. When I go to Settings, Connections, Bluetooth: it says "There is no Bluetooth hardware installed on this device". Also, it seems the ExtROM is missing. At Device information, there is noting next to 'ExtROM-Version:'
ROM-Version: 1.01.00 WWE
Rom-Date 10/21/04
Radio-Version: 1.00.10
Protocol-Version: 1337.36
ExtROM-Version:
Did I use the wrong ROM file? (I think it was the one posted here) Or should I install the ExtROM separatly?
Hope you can help!

Ok we already managed to dump the iMate OS and Extended OS ROM part and flash it to our MDA Compacts.
BUT the iMate JAM has also a newer Radio ROM which is version R 1.01.00 instead of R 1.00.10 that our Compacts have. And also the G part of the ROM (does G stands for GPRS??) on imate JAM is version G 1337.38 and not G 1337.36 as on our compacts. So can anyone tell me how could I dump these 2 parts of the ROM so we can have the full upgrade????
Please hurry as I won't be able to keep the imate JAM any longer!

I ordered an MDA Compact from blueshop24.de, and I can recommend it to everyone. They deliver prompt (24 hour), have a good e-mail support and a good price. I paid 444,90 Euro + 16.90 euro shipping costs.
The unit I received was SIMLOCK FREE and with a German OS. It worked 'out-of-the-box' with my Belgian SIM card.
Then I upgraded the unit to an English ROM and encountered some small problems. I list them here, maybe usefull for other upgraders.
- I only have a 512MByte SDCard, this works fine.
- You absolutely need NTRW V2.0. The version available from FTP, is not 2.0. I googled to find V2.0.
- The Hexeditor on FTP, does not accept the 512MByte file created by NTRW (when using a 512MByte SD Card). I used another hexeditor I already had on my system. Any editor will do.
- Reading and writing the SDcard with NTRW does not work if the cardreader is already attached to the pc during booting. If so, it will result in a Windows API error: 'can not lock file ....'
Just connect the cardreader after booting, then insert the SDCard. This was a problem for me because my cardreader is build in my PC. I had to find my 'old' external SD card reader.
Result: a perfectly working English OS MDA Compact for 445 Euro.
I now start installing my GPS and Alturion software. I will use this small marvel as a GSM and GPS navigation system.
If anybody would have a Dutch version of the OS, please post.

Hey guys,
I've been struggling to get my MDA compact upgraded from German to English as well.... it's driving me nuts.
I've downloaded the complete ROM, which afterwards from looking at this thread I find out has the wrong version of ntrw. Weird enough, when using this version, it does say 2.00 at the start though.
The first time I made backup of my original ROM is worked fine and seemed to write the ROM through romupdate to my SD card. I wouldn't 'read' though to a .nb1 file on my HD. It gave a "File not found" error.
After this, my SD card wouldn't format anymore. Not through my PC; under windows or DOS. Formatting under DOS says "no good medium or track 0 is damaged. The disk is unusable. (more or less...it's in Dutch) This makes me assume the bootsector has been fried. I used a Sandisk 1Gb Ultra II SD card. I got this @%# about 4 hours before frying the damn thing...
I did try taking the header from the German ROM supplied in the Newicom version, and pasting the first 220 (and later 416) bytes to the English version. I wrote it to the SD card, which did seem to work, at least it didn't give me any errors. But after a hard reset, it just hangs on Serial V1.00, while according to the procedure it's supposed to ask me to Flash the ROM...
So there's a few questions I have now:
- Is there any way to fix my bootsector of my SD card... or is this final, and do I really have to go through the trouble of exchanging my card...? I have also tried storage tools, which seemed to format the card fine, but I really don't think it's been fixed at all.
- I seem to have now downloaded the correct version of NTRW (it now does read the ROM from my SD card), but the SD card is already screwed. I got it from this thread. However, is it actually the wrong version of NTRW which fried my card, or when I return my card to my reseller trying to get a new one, is there a chance I'll fuck up the bootsector again (I'm going to try to switch it for a Kingston 1Gb card without ultra II, because I keep hearing al these bad stories about Sandisk...)?
- Is there instead of Newicom's English T-Mobile ROM, an English 'clean' I-Mate Jam version available anywhere yet? Otherwise, I'll have to start cracking open the extended ROM as well, after flashing, getting rid of all that T-Mobile stuff I don't need/want. I'm seriously done with flashing and cracking... I just want to start using my MDA Compact...
Any help would realy be appreciated... I'm so tired of this crap...

Thank you.

while surfing the web about information about changing my MDA Compact from german to english I came to this great forum. At first I want to say thank you to all the guys who made this possible.
After reading through this thread very carefully I managed to get my MDA to english without any problems, this is great!
How about building a new ZIP including everything, like the one hostet at the nowicom-server but with the right ntrw.exe and everything? Would't it be time for a FAQ?
So please tell me if I should create a new package and upload it to the forum ftp.

I copied the English rom to my sd-card using ntrw. So far so good (I thought).
But then when I hard reset my device (camera+on/off+soft reset) I get the dark screen with the text Serial on it, but nothing happens!
So I figured the ROM wasn't properly written to my sd-card. Thus I wrote it again (again with ntrw). But the same problem: the flashing doesn't start after the reset...
Anyone out there who can help me???

Hello everyone,
I'm new to this board and I read nearly all threads about MDA. I bought my T Mobile MDA Compact 2 weeks ago from Germany. Yesterday while I was trying to change its language to English its locked. I installed Windows 2003 SE then device restarted but not open anymore. Now I can not open it. When I try to open it on the top of the screen it writes "Seial" and at tthe bottom it writes "1.00 Version". What should I do? I need immediate assistant; can anybody help me to make my MDA Compact working again?
Thanks

Device Info:
PM10A 0 A
GERR
T-MOB101 *
1.01.01 0 1
1.01.120
1.00.10 GER
Now I do have the following (Dutch?) ROM:
MA_DT_WWE_DutchRetail_11100_550_11100_Ship.exe
by Dangaard
With the following files included in the exe:
- UI.dll
- RUU.dll
- RUU.conf
- ROMUpgradeUt.exe
- radio.nbf
- nk.nbf
- ms.nbf

Mastah-Gsi,
yes you can upgrade with the ROM you have. You need to replace the ROMUpgradeUt.exe with the attached file though. This fixes the Country ID error you would encounter when using the original ROMUpgradeUt.exe. Just replace the file in the temp folder and run the copied one manually. It may not work the first time, just run it again and it will work.
