this sounds promising.
If we can assume that all roms are based on 1 original (and I can't be;ieve that one is chinese . . .) there MUST be a Himalaya WM2003SE WWE rom around . . .
Now if only someone can post that one . . .

I think like you edsub.
It mean that all XDA2 can use WM2003 SE.
but from other post, most of people said O2 won't release W2K3 SE
may from business trick for sell other device such as XDAIIs or XDA III

The device like xda II, mda II, qtek version, dpod version and other has the same hardware. If that one can use SE perfectly, surely we SE can also be use to XDA II.... i know 1 member here who uses SE he showed it to me in the pix and its tru... but he dont want to share cuz he promised to Microsoft that he will not distribute it...

Sorry, but if you name it Dopod 696 it's XDAII with Windows 2003 (not SE) you can see this link http://www.dopod.com/gb/product/696_1.jsp
and this is 696i (T-Mobile design) http://www.dopod.com/gb/product/696i_1.jsp

Could anyone confirm this please?
buzz_lightyear
30th November 2004, 12:01 PM
The language of the ROM is CHINESE. It is not any customisation from some .cab. The OS is just built as CHINESE OS. However, if you want to try it, here's step by step:
Steps for upgrade:
1. make SD ROM backup of your XDA II
2. using Winhex, save the content to PC
3. using Winhex, copy the first 412 bytes from the header of your backup file
4. using Winhex, paste them over first 412 bytes of the chinese ROM backup binary file and save it
5. using Winhex, write chinese ROM backup file onto your SD card
6. put the SD card in XDA II and enter bootloader mode (wait a bit)...
7. press "Power" to flash...
That's it. At the end of flashing, it will complain, that "checksum failed", but just reset and....
...I have WM2003 SE running on my XDAII!
I'm not saying too much details on how to do this and that, because if you are NOT an EXPERIENCED USER of winhex, XDA II bootloader, YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE, HOW TO FLASH XDA II, THEN:

1.02 I think (displays Serial 1.02 when entering bootloader mode).
I used romUpdate tool to flash the SD backup, then WinHex to extract the 412 bytes and copy them onto the .Bin file from the dopod.
Then flashed this back to the deviced, ignored the CRC error and reset.
Works fine.

One hint for english translation. This ROM contains lots of files named *.0804.mui. If you delete them, the corresponding modules would become english.
Most of them are inside ROM, so we cannot delete it -> we have to patch ROM. For example we can search and replace all strings ".0804.mui" with ".0804.tmp" in ROM, then reflash and look what happens. Or you can overwrite these files with zero-length files, theoretically this may help and would not require reflashing.
I cannot check this myself now - I don't have a card reader near me to flash this ROM. And reflashing using HimaUpgradeUt.exe brings us a device stuck into bootloader. This is maybe due to a fact that chinese ROM is larger than English (1FC0000 bytes in chineese and 1F80000 in English) and HimaUpgradeUt erase/flash only first 1F80000 bytes.

I've made an update that can be installed without SD-card.
http://mamaich.kasone.com/imate/chineese_se.rar (18460034 bytes)
To install it - extract this archive, enter bootloader on your device and run HimaUpgradeUt.exe.
The nk.nbf also contains the 1.06 bootloader, it was not updated on my device. But I'm not sure, so those who have 1.02 bootloader - be careful, program may update it to 1.06 version!
The extended ROM is not included into archive.
And one note. It seems that my device started to work a bit slower after installing this ROM.
P.S. I'm trying now to remove MUI files from ROM, I'll post what I'll get.

Hi mamaich,
it looks to me, that my device was a bit slower on the first start, but after that it is a bit faster than 1.72 ROM... and I'm overalll quite satisfied with it...
We will also need to replace all of .html files and install standard fonts, which are in chinese as well. But that is not a big issue, I would say.
I'm not quite sure at the moment, what can be done with SIP, however additional SIPs can be installed...

Amazing, but how did you transfer rom image file into .nbf ?

when I try to upgrade it say upgrade to ver 1.7x ?
Is this correct?
It shows 1.72 because I have not fixed the version number in NBF-header. After upgrade you'll get 2.20 OS.

Hi mamaich,
I got the Nbf file and your recent file Radio_118, but what about the extended file? So shall i merge all these files together in order to flash the new SE Rom or can i just upgrade the file one by one?
Last but not least, can someone pls confirm whether we could downgrade it back to 1.72 or 1.66 back after upgrading it.
Thanks for your valuable finding here.

I think I can answer this question: as instruction says:
To install it enter bootloader on your device and run HimaUpgradeUt.exe.
That's it. It will upgrade Radio only. Do full backup before, since device will be hard reset. I just did it and it works fine

Yesterday I've successfully downgraded my device back to 1.72. GSM Rom can be also downgraded. I got the Nbf file and your recent file Radio_118, but what about the extended file? So shall i merge all these files together in order to flash the new SE Rom or can i just upgrade the file one by one?
Extended ROM should be heavily edited to remove chineese customisations and update MMS client to MMS client from XDA3. It seems that chineese MMS client is not working.

Hi mamaich,
Thanks for your fast reply. Anyway i'm still unable to figure out few things:-
1) When i opened the NK.nbf rom using er2003edit, the operator's name shown CDL. Hence, is it possible for me to just change the operators's name to O2 and save it by using the same er2003edit without using the xda2nbftool.exe? FYI, I'm currently running 1.72WWE imate O2 rom version wif 1.06 bootloader.
2)If i just upgrade only the NK.nbf and Radio_118.nbf file, would i need to manually put in the SE Extended_rom.exe (which was uploaded by u recentely) later on by using the xda2unlock.exe?
3)Like u said the mms client is not really working, would it be fine if i just replace your SE Extended_rom.exe wif imate original 1.72 Extended Rom?
Would there be any clash btwn a chinese rom and a english rom?
Thanks for your clarification.
Well Done!!!

Probably you can use er2003edit to change operator name. I prefere to use command line xda2nbftool.

You should use Extended ROM Unlocker to unlock ROM, place chineese extrom ant then hard reset.

This should be tested. I'll try to install XDA3 extended ROM to imate.

Hi mamaich,
Thanks for everything. Nevertheless do u think is it possible for me to recook the rom by adding cab files extracted from 1.60 Asia rom like PegasCE-sdio.2577.cab and ClearVueV2.4.380WWE.sa.CAB and also telco setting like Maxis.cab, O2ASIAMaxis_AP_20040211.sa.CAB ?
These above mentioned files are meant for gprs and mms setting for my country.
Do you personally think this could work if I add them in to the Chinese SE Rom by doing a hard reset after copying it using the Extended ROM Unlocker?
Anyone has tried it?

To install extended ROM you should install "Extended ROM Unlocker" tool. "unhide" ROM, reboot, than "unlock" ROM. New folder would appear on your device with the extended ROM contents. Delete all files from there (you may backup them if you whant) and extract RAR archive to that folder. Do not run any CAB file from that folder, do a hard reset and these progs would be installed automatically.

Hi mamaich, can you change the version 1.72 to 2.20.07, and language from WWE to CHS, and repost again, please.
As lots of user in China is using Dopod 696, and the language is CHS, and using nbf is much easier to upgrade, thanks
