View Full Version : An attempt to make English 2K3 SE

I've partially translated OS to English. Here are the screenshots:
http://mamaich.kasone.com/imate/se/CEZoom0.gif http://mamaich.kasone.com/imate/se/CEZoom1.gif http://mamaich.kasone.com/imate/se/CEZoom4.gif

To translate I've used an ugly hack. I've taken the english modules from XDA3 ROM, patched them, renamed to *.0409.mui and edited registry a little. This is not an optimal approach. These files can be made much smaller by removing the unnecessary code/data sections and keeping only the resources. I'll do that later.
I've uploaded my backup made with xBackup to http://mamaich.kasone.com/imate/CompactFlashBackUpNew.rar (9,477,907 bytes)
The translation is not finished. For example Camera and Album applications are still chinese, most of registry is still in chinese.
I've found 2 problems in 2K3 SE. Sometimes in bluetooth settings the "turn on bluetooth" checkbox clears or sets itself, and the default font size seems to be larger than in 1.72 ROM, so some windows look ugly.
To install this backup - extract archive to SD-card and run \windows\xBackup from File Explorer.
edited: now contacts are working and QKeys does not cause problems.

Does this mean I can restore from the provided backup file and my device will be using Mobile 2003 SE? Is everything functional to this point? What happens if I do a soft reset, and if I do a hard reset? Tell me if this is correct- soft reset (will still se 2003 SE), if hard reset (will revert back to original Mobile 2003).
Does this allow me to go back to the original state when I bought the phone? By doing a hard reset?

This is some REALLY EXCITING NEWS!! However I would like to get the imput of some others using this before I jump in and start restoring other people's backups, I have learned from the Bluetooth Widcomm thing floating around here with my Qtek 2020 that I could never uninstall the thing and too many hard resets made me think twice before jumping the gun.
But I have a question, how does restoring a backup CHANGE the ROM version when we normally have to go through a drudging 45-minute ROM update by FLASHING it, but here it would be an update in only 3 minutes, I am unclear to this - can someone please enlighten me? But great work!! Keep it going!!!
After all of the translations and trials are finished, I assume that there will be THE ENGLISH SE ROM posted here that will enable all of the users to therefor FLASH their ROM to the SE? I am confused...
- Cheers and Kudos!!

you have to first upgrade to the chinese 2003SE rom and THEN install the backup above to get it to english (but not the complete os...)
Jeff
2nd December 2004, 11:46 AM
@JaToAc: Thanks.
I assume that I will find the Chinese SE ROM here in the forum somewhere once I look a bit. Here come the NEXT questions:
If the Flash to a chinese SE ROM doesn't go well is there always the way to revert back to my 1.72 EN without any devestating effects?
Shall I wait a while longer to have all of the translations and imput bugs updated before FLASHING?
After the ROM upgrade, what information can I backup i.e. programmes from my sprite file from my 1.72 ROM? IS this possible? I dont think so... The PIM data yes, but nothing from the 1.72 ROM including the programmes is restorable, no? Someone can comment on this?
If this is the case then THIS IS THE SE UPDATE that everyone has been looking for!!!
The holy grail?!?!? Mama always said that if it is too good to be true then it probably is...
Guess I am still sore about that Widcomm incedent...
Just my .02
Damn! I ask a lot of questons, no?
- Cheers

Hi all,
for everyone, who want to test this rom and go back to previous one (e.g. 1.72, 1.66 etc.) withouth dala loosing I have one tip.
Sunnysoft backup manager can save all contens of your device (all files, registry, databases) to backup file on SD card and restore it.
I want to see my XDA with SE, test it, but still wait on 1.72 for a while
1. I did full backup by Sunnysoft Backup Manager
2. I flashed to this 2k3SE and did some testing.
3. I flashed back my previos 1.72
4. I restored all files, registry, etc. form backup made by Sunnysoft Backup Manager
I have my device directly in same state as before testing. :)

No, this is the official russian localisation program created for PDA2k(MDA III), so with some fixes it works fine on XDAII SE.

I don't have any issue, everything working perfectly.
I also have experienced that when starting CAMERA it will revert back to standard layout for the display, but that was the same with the original chinese ROM so that is not caused by your change.

Hi Guys!
Since this WM2003 SE upgrade will erase the contents of my XDA II, will my backup with SpriteBackup restore all my links/connection settings/programs/etc after flashing and application of the english patch? Or will it cause conflicts since some parts of the backup are from WM2003 and not WM2003 SE? Also, will the Widcom BT stack be restored from my backup or is WM2003 SE already using Widcom?
Thanks!

I think that restoring programs would cause problems with 2K3SE OS. Photo Contacts is not compatible with SE, some other programs also hang. And Widcomm stack should be reinstalled from scratch. WM2K3 SE contains an improved BT-stack that supports PAN, COM-port and headset.

Hi,
you have to move the backup file into /Storage folder (in case you don't have an SD card)
xBackup can be found in Start -> Programs

If xbackup is located under start, programs......ity's gotta be one of the chinese icons....which one is it? i reconize most, but for the life of me i cant figure out which one is xbackup!
Also the backup file is a little too big to fit into the storage directory.

Just checked for you - the xbackup icon is like the Buttons icon in the Personal Settings menu (the orange mobile device icon), but it has two grey SD cards next to it. It should be the last one in Programs, unless you've got any other apps with an 'x' in them.
