Translate 2003SE ROM 2.20 Chinese--> English

Anyone know how to translate this ROM 2.20Chinese to English...
so we can have wmp10 in our XDA, and other features that is better than 2.06 and 2.02 ROM....

The test version of English ROM made from chinese 2.20 is uploaded to http://mamaich.kasone.com/imate/en.rar
archive contains nk.nba file that should be processe d with xda2nbftool and flashed.

I've uploaded mkrom toolkit used to create this ROM to: http://mamaich.kasone.com/imate/mkrom_220chs.rar (18.5 mb)
Original toolkit is taken from http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/mkrom

To use it you'll need Linux or CygWin enviroment (I use cygwin), Perl, hex editor (I use HIEW). You should place new files to files1...files5 directories. Here is the maximal size these directories can be:
Files1: 655360 bytes
Files2: 1245184 bytes
Files3: 262144 bytes
Files4: 524288 bytes
Files5: 1114112 bytes
Toolkit would not warn you if this size is exceeded and would produce dead ROMs.
Files1 folder should contain mxip_MYXIP_100.rgu file which is a modified registry. CreateEngLinks.exe is a program that runs after hardreset and creates english folders and links. I was unable to patch the initobj.dat and default.fdf files in ROM, so I had to create this program.
cfg\os.nb1 is a "base" ROM image with some files renamed. You should not touch default.fdf, initobj.dat and kernel.rgu

When you run ./a.sh file it would produce a new ROM named nk.nb1. Use any hex editor to place this file to offset 0x40040 of NK.NBA I've posted in the prev. message and modify it's CRC and encrypt:
xda2nbftool.exe -c -u NK.nba
xda2nbftool -x NK.nba NK.nbf 0x20040304

Use this toolkit at your own risk. Addresses in ./a.sh are taken from 2.20.07 chinese simplified ROM and should be modified to be used with other ROMs. You may completely destroy your device if this toolkit is used incorrectly.

for your convenience I just created regular upgrade package out of mamaich's nk.nba file.
PERFECT WORK mamaich... :o)))

It is Country ID and Operator ID INDEPENDENT, however it will change your device to Qtek + WWE after upgrade.

If you don't like that, just edit .nbf files yourself.

Extended ROM is NOT included, because I believe, that anyone can build his own Ext ROM to suit his personal taste...

I suppose it can read/write chinese sms without the use of 3rd-party program?

i upgraded with the 2.20 file, anything runs fine, except, i can't turn on my qtek2020 with any button, neither the power button, nor the application buttons. only way to turn it on is doing a soft-reset or getting an incoming call..

what went wrong with the update??

2. The other 2 versions have only 3 alarms for the clock, and I really miss the 4th one in 1.72 :)

This is the most stable one from all SEs.

To make it more stable, turn off your radio when doing soft-resets and don't install or edit any language registry values! And don't use software that works with them, such as LENG and other.

When I open Programs -> File Explorer -> My Documents, I see some folders with square boxes as folder names. Any purpose for these folders? They are empty. Can I delete them?

One thing I found is that when my phone is off my O2 II will soft reset if I tap the GPRS icon on the Today screen top bar. Is this normal or am I getting a new soft reset button?

Again, when I go to Programs -> File Explorer -> Program Files I see a square box folder. Another thing is that there're two WMP folders. One of them is Windows Media PlayerCS which on opening display square boxes

Next, is if I go to Windows I see a square box folder right on the first line. If you tap on it it'll open with more square box folders and the icons - Help, Calendar, Phone, Contacts and Messaging come with square box names.

I presume all these square boxes are in chinese not properly translated yet.

Well.. The today screen is now adjusted with text size, but all the icons in the start menu, programs, and Settings did not change. I can live with that. I'd like to get Block Recognizer as one of the input methods.. (Old PALM entry junkie.) Other than that.. WORKS GREAT..

I noticed that when starting GB-SOFT tweak and tapping on audio tab or About tab, the GPRS settings tab caption dissapear.
Also if you tap on audio then about tab and after that, you tap on ok, qtek hangs and you need to do soft reset.

Its a BUG! BUG! BUG! On top of that the xda2 will soft reset itself now and then when:-

1) Restore from Sprite Backup
2) Installing new software
3) Start-Settings-Today-Items-OK and close it will result soft reset.

Noway! From here it might be concluded that some of your Today items are WMSE-incompatible i.e. can not process selectability message. Try removing them from Today's Registry

As for GPRS, this is only a 3rd party faulty program, not the core of operating system. And i'm working on turning the usual "G" back now...

I use the default Backup software in my O2XDA II and there's no problem at all. As for the other above 2 items I do not have such soft reset problem.

Yes, I do face this problem. If not hang then some of the programs in the 'Settings' menu doesn't work at all

Does anyone have two squares when KB is available? You can even move these two...

And one more... I was trying to bind my HBH65 and was pressing answer button and finally each time i pressed the button my handset draw circles near G icon. Any idea? Does it mean we can use handsfree profile or headset button?

1. when i want t o write a text on sms, the text is very small..can you fix it to back to default

What are the main differences between this rom and the 2.02 rom from dcs, i have no problems with 2.02 at the minute apart from the bluetooth today plugin keep disappearing, so am a bit reluctant to upgrade again if i'm gonna lose more functionality <-- Hope i spelt that right :)


I know that this is supposed to be an official release of SE but their appears to be a few shortfalls in the translation still (especially the keyboard and transscriber input (which i've just discovered and love)

Oh sorry, just one more question.... I'll obviously have to change the operator id in the rom to Orange using dcs's batch file, can i use the radio 1.18 from 2.02 and keep boot loader 1.02 or will this update change the boot loader to 1.06.

1st can someone post a pic of the keyboard in use, is it coloured or just like the one from wm2003. (seen pics of a coloured keyboard?)

- Bluetooth stack won't work with serial connection (it tries and tries but no way to sync with pc)
- Not all is translated (helpfiles, connections and some folders)
- And most important, the danish letter ø, is not present on the keyboard ;-)


All in all, stable but lacks functionality too much. Better of with the old one, and danes should not consider upgrading.

There is no additional software, due to the fact that there is no EXT ROM in the package. You have to download and install one from another rom. Simply extract the files, and move them to your Device and run the Autorun.exe file.

Please, if you do not know what you are doing. And how your device WORKS, read about it in the forum BEFORE you do an upgrade.

It was not possible to fix everything yet, coz it looks, that in some parts of OS, the font spec is HARDCODED... :(

However, this .cab will improve the look of translated CHS ROM + it will make your keyboard a bit nicer. Some UI speed improvement also included...

Put it into your EXT ROM or copy and run it manually.

I mean,not address book appearing on the screen, but phone numbers were appearing when you type recepient name in To: field

Well, just tried it, didn't like it so went back to 2.02 but kept my original ext rom from 1.66.... working a treat, just need to extract the best bits from the other orange rom from djms.....

Screen brightness can be adjusted by going to Start -> Settings -> System -> Backlight -> Brightness and you can adjust it for use with On Battery or On Power

I can adjust it from 0 - 100% without problem

ok.... this is how I tested....after I found the Infra not able to activeSync when I was on Biz trip....

I'm on ROM 2.20.0.7 (Windows Mobile 2003 SE)

1) Hard reset device.....
2) Verify that ActiveSync Infra Works (YES)
2) Apply SE2EN..

Straight after this....the ActiveSync Infra will not work

Is that isolated enough to justify that its SE2EN that cause this prob??
Hope someone has a solution ..... :)

BTW, after using since its release there're quite a few other small issues besides those already mentioned with this chinese-english translated ROM.

For a start, I'm experiencing drop connection to my bluetooth headset which I've not experienced before with english version of WM2003se and v1.72 ROM.

2nd, if you set the font size correct on the Today screen through "SCREEN" then the font size becomes too small for text messaging. Conversely, if you'll to set the right size font for text messaging then it'll become too large on the Today screen. Also, font size in the "PROGRAMS" menu is a bit too big.

3rd, after having the SDIO WiFi cab file in EXT ROM, its difficult to get the first time connection without a few soft resets. Subsequent connections
then becomes easy.

4th, all the square boxes I mentioned in the earlier posts are indeed chinese characters not properly translated because after installing CE Star Suite all the square boxes turned into chinese characters.

Hi FOSA. Normally, if the network provides GPRS, you see a big G there. If you see two arrows + small G, you are conneted. If you have cross + two arrows, GPRS is not available...

Well even if I've installed it, my ActiveSync via BT doesn't work yet. I Knew this tool, and using it on WM2003, it allowed me to choose a profile to assign to BT device I was pairing. Now, on WMSE 2.20 I can't do it. Window where I should set profile, appears for a little while, and than it desappears, without allowing me to set com profile.
ActiveSync can't recognize BT connection...

Please if you was able to set it give us a little help by writing a tutorial.

2.20 is using BTDUN.dll for BT dial-up networking, and

I understand that after bonding BT, the 2.20 users are presented with a screen that has 4 checkboxes for Headset/Handsfree, ActiveSync, Dialup-Networking, Serial.

2.02 and 2.06 ROM do not have that. Can the 2.20 users share your experiences with the various BT settings?

I am using 2.06 merged with 2.02 registry settings only, and I'm experimenting with 2.20 BT stuff. Insofar, I didn't experience better BT using 2.20 BT registry settings nor files.

Therefore, I have moved back to my merged BT settings.

Btw, one more thing:

In 2.02/2.06, there is one more entry not discussed under SIN's posting:

The devices actually bond each other, is the ActiveSync part of the procedure (under Setting-BT-options-ActiveSync) the one that gives the message that you should "bond" the devices, in an endless loop.
The PC "sees" the XDA, but it reports that the services are not found in the device. Just registry? The checkboxes however are there while pairing the devices, so it makes no sense. Seems something deeply tied to ActiveSync profile itself.

This is for configuring iPAQ for BT ActiveSync. I've verified that it works for me, but then again, I'm using 2.06 ROM. Perhaps you can try.

I have tried a few combinations now myself, firstly the headset didnt work, now the headset does work, I cant get active sync to work at all, comes up with a message saying it cant find any device now. I also tried the BT Tools, and this didnt help either.

yes, i have the problem! it also occurs with GS-player.. :( i going to try to overclock the cpu a bit... maybe that solves the problem till this 'bug' is fixed :)

I noticed that when starting GB-SOFT tweak and tapping on audio tab or About tab, the GPRS settings tab caption dissapear.
Also if you tap on audio then about tab and after that, you tap on ok, qtek hangs and you need to do soft reset.

after lot of MUI research, editing, hacking, reverse engineering etc... I have some GOOD news, BAD news and MORE BAD news... :)

So for the good news
.mui files contain:
localised strings, DIALOGS + FONTS, registry entries, bitmaps, MENUs + FONTS, icons, and other usefull stuff.
That means, they are quite customisable using some resource editor.
Well you can change the whole look of WM2003 if you like
However...

...for the BAD news
Those .mui files, which we are using in CHS ROM are so badly done... It looks to me, they are unfinished or just done half the way or so... Text strings are not aligned with combo boxes, fonts are hardcoded all over them, sometimes there is System font used, sometimes Tahoma is hardcoded...
Just grab ResHAcker somewhere from the internet and take a look yourself. I would suggest to look at shellres.dll.0409.mui. You can see, how much work must be done to change all those things in there...

...and for more bad news
I couldn't get the files needed for Transcriber off of the XDA... they are in the ROM and I found no way to copy them out. dumprom doesn't help too much coz it dumps corrupt ROM files....
If anyone can find the way, how to "unlock" ROM files protection, please let me know...

Dumprom dumps _correct_ files. These DLLS you are talking about are XIP, so that they don't contain relocations (that are useless for XIP DLLs). That is why they look like being corrupted. You cannot get a working version of these DLLs from any ROM. The only thing I can recommend is to find someone who has a full version of PlatformBuilder and ask him to compile the required DLLs.

I can see many help file just saved in \windows folder.
some system folder such as 'program' 'startup' still in Chinese.

I wonder why we cannot simply overwrite those files and rename system folders? maybe we have to change some registry items.
To compare with hack Rom file, it is much easier to write a eVC/eVB/script program to do these.

For those chinese strings stored in resource, can we search unicode chinese string and replace them to English?
Is it hard because chinese words is usually shorter than english in unicode?
such as 'Work settings' occupies 13 characters space but chinese only has 4 characters?


It is a great work! I am a chinese working in the UK. I need english UI but sometimes need some chinese software as well. This ROM is perfect for me except bugs :P

1- the squares appearing instead if the folders
2- the miss of the transcriber. I tried to install the versions 1.5 and 1.51 from MS but it is not working. Do you have a solution to install it?

1) This version It is working well, But it has an amount of folder without names?? The help menu is not translated to English?? You have to create your "My ISP"
to be able you connect yours GPRS operator.

I think there is a problem with your extended Rom. Because I have 2.20.7CHS translated version installed on my XDA-II and the recording button can be assigned to the recoerd though i have it coupled with Screen Rotate. I had also installed the same Rom on a friend's mobile and today I especially checked just for you and there were no probs with assigning the record button to the recording function.

Hi,

Anyone encounter poor battery life after installing the ROM?
Seems like my battery couldn't last me 10 hours (with BT turnoff, normal usage) while last time using 2.06/2.02 ROM, I wouldn't experience low battery warning for 36 hours at least.

for your convenience I just created regular upgrade package out of mamaich's nk.nba file.
PERFECT WORK mamaich... :o)))

It is Country ID and Operator ID INDEPENDENT, however it will change your device to Qtek + WWE after upgrade.

If you don't like that, just edit .nbf files yourself.

Radio version: 1.18.00

Extended ROM is NOT included, because I believe, that anyone can build his own Ext ROM to suit his personal taste...

Hi yougotabig_what,
You have to change the operator, e.g. O2, Qtek, CDL　(default), etc. by using Windows Mobile 2003 - ROM Editor tool.

I found new problem. Media player is some kind of broken. I get strange sound from it and the songs go faster or slower. I downgrade to 2.06 and everything was fine. Does any one have idea how to solve this problem? :shock:

yep..media player few times is going slower and slower and you hear cracky sound! (the cracky sound persists in games,etc.. your device become really slow!) this is coused by PocketDos installation and other programs..there are some conflicts!
I found no way to correct this,Uninstallation does not solve.
So I had to Hard Reset and till now I verify all apps I install and then do backup.

Okay, I just installed the wm2003se 2.20 and it seems to work grand except for two things so far, one of which is a HUGE PROBLEM:

1. A minor problem; the screen flickers slightly? Even in Portrait mode, especially at the bottom of the screen, but I could live with that.

2. This is the major problem!!!: I can read NO SD CARDS! I have tried two, and everytime I insert them, my XDA2 freezes and I have to soft-reset and remove the card. This is a HUGE problem for me, as I always use my memory card and also have a backup on it which I absolutely need to restore!
If I can't solve this problem, I won't be using this ROM:(

Does anybody know how to fix this problem? Thanks so much in advance, as I really, really want to use this ROM!

Please, read the forum and check for the modified HIMAUPGRADE utility to upgrade to ANY ROM without the hassle. It's the easiest way if you don't mind your device "id" after upgrading.

follow the following instructions:

1: download the translated english wm2003 SE 2.20.7

2: save it to a new map

3: open ER 2003 Edit (this is something that changes the operator name )

4: if it wants passwoord then open ER 2003 Edit passwoord en voor every .nbf files there is a paswoord and full them when it asks for the paswoord.

5: save the file and it wil be saved in the same map and if it asks a paswoord then u know u have it !!!! (the paswoord u entered)

6: when u done this for these file s bellow then start the upgrade again !

As a non english-native speaker, I can ensure you that it's almost 95% translated.
Some help files and some other parts are not translated, and you'll find some "odd" things along the way, but as far as menus, keyboards, apps etc, the job is very well done and consistent, and that is a fair compliment to Buzz_Lightyear and his excellent efforts.

If you want/need some of the unique features of 2.20, this is the way to go by the moment...

Buzz what happened to the Transcriber,Dictionary, and the fonts, have you figured a way to solve the hardcoded ones?

I read the previous post and even I installed the translated one that's thanks to whom contributed and uploaded the rom to it servers "Thank you guys" because I can't access the ftp I'm behing a firewall.

It's the most SE stable i've seen so far ;) but it has some issues I wish they could be solved by you, are you are looking forward for the Magneto and stoped working on this ROM?

About activesync it's solved using the Broadcom-Widcom, thanks for whom worked on the hack as well :)
