Messenger in Win2003 SE

do we need to install the update for the msn with the 2.06 win2003se version?

i have the v2.06 and 1.18 version's on my xda2 and can't conect to the messenger, but i have internet(ex. google.com, etc).

I didn't have to.
remember that the messenger service sometimes goes down at the most inopportune moments..
