View Full Version : Turn your JAM to ultimate MP3 player
This is the first mod that I am doing to all my PocketPC Phone devices - modifying stereo headset. Original ones are Ok if you intend using them for 10 minutes or so, after that is just a plain torture. Well, at least for me.
Here is the result of my mod. Standard heads are replaced with SONY MDR EX51LP. Paired with this little addon for adjusting bass and treble it creates amazing result. In fact, it sounds better than any standalone mp3 player

Wwoo nice.. talking about torture. I used the ones that come with the PDA2K for 50 min straight now.. Jesus... it made me think the machine it self output garbage. The ones that come with the PDA2K are more suited for calls not music.. I wonder if there's anywhere to purchase something like you did. I don't have time myself for modifications.. I wouldn't mind the mic.. Maybe i'll just find a plug converter and plugin my sony's to the i-mate.. Good job you did.. looks professional
Thanks :)
It took me maybe 15 min to do :)
Of course, adapter will work, but them if someone calls you while you listen to the music you'll have to unplug headset and use the unit itself. In this case, just press a buttom ;)
Another good solution is to buy the SE headset. It works just fine with the JAM including the mic. I may go for the one with the radio on it as well. And that makes the Compact/JAM really complete!!

I would say replace the 2 earspeaker units instead of cut in the middle of the line. Also, both earphone can be reverse to the very begin when need....

I can't post step-by-step pictures since unit is already assembled. sorry. But it's really easy:
1. Take apart this middle thingy by inserting your nails or very thin plastic knife. Meake sure no ti brake 4 little plastic clips, 2 on each side.
2. Take off top part.
3. Gently push wire from headphones side in to give some freedom for the circut board.
4. Lift it up the cisrcuit board and expose soldering points
5. Write down existing coloring of the wires soldered.
5. Unsolder
6. Cut appropriate lenght from Sony or whatever you wanna use.
7. Prepare wires for soldering
8. Don't forget to twist the wire the same manner as the original was.
9. Test headphones with case open and make sure both channels are working
10. Gently close cover
Sorry, was typing this in the rush. Feel free to ask more

I think of attaching a 3.5mm female plug just above the accept/reject button on the headphones so i can plug any headphones + i won't loose my expensive shruce..
but i always face problems in baring the wires of headphones they are very thin and fragile and can be cut easily i don't know about xda II headphones but im afraid that i will end up loosing it..
ID64 what do you think is the most adequate method of baring the wires????

I just rubed it with soldering iron from all sides. Eventially, solder will stick on to it :)

I did it too I did it too and it kicks butt!!!
i took the safe route. The wiring on the circuit board was too complicated for my novice hands so i didnt mess with that part. I just cut the PPC headphone wire and soldered my nice sony headphone wire to that and now it all works... the little remote control thingy and my headphones.
since there's a little join in the wire, it doesnt look as clean as i'd like it to but it works great.
if i learn how to play with circuits or find someone who knows how to, maybe i'll get the 'read' job done too but as far as listening goes, it works like a charm. great idea!

I've tried this, but it actually seems to mangle the stereo. One channel comes through fine, but the other seems to be a mix of both or something. Very weird. (see my other call for help on this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=15049 ). Have you found this problem too?

I have this on my T610. The FM is good on the T610.
Guess what the pouch is able to squeeze in my mini.
Think the FM radio will be difficult to used it for mini as it required a power source and the connector is different.
However, looking at this bluetooth devices that support FM :

2 Bluetooth devices are listed here.

http://members.home.nl/zesmeth/ipod2.jpg
No, it is just my Mda Compact, with the Ice Brando case and a program called nBop.
Just look for this program on the net, you can still find it somewhere. It turns your S100/Magician into an actual working Ipod. Together with the new headsets they are shipping with the MDA, it really looks like one. :D

Not in Holland. Hong Kong.
Just go to http://shop.brando.com.hk and look for Xda mini accessories. It will be shipped to the Netherlands and it arrives in about 3/4 days. I later discovered that there are also metal cases for my Compact. I mights order one, because the sillicone one I have is fine against scratches, but it is not enough protection for a big fall.
It seems to me that the microphone unit is a one-time assembly because there are hidden hooks. When I slightly tried to open it using a very small screwdriver, I noticed that there appear unpleasant defects.
The question is: If anybody can suggest the method for opening the microphone unit?

Ditto here, I'm willing to buy this...for a reasonable price of course.
I have not soldered anything before, and I made it. You can surely do it yourself, just follow ID64's steps.
Just be sure to use a plastic knife to not leave ugly marks on the mic cover, just like ID64 said (i used a normal knife and it made some ugly marks)
And dont touch it with the soldering iron (i know, I'm very clumsy hehe)
Otherwise it's a piece of cake, just do it slowly, I thought I had for sure broken it considering the amount of times i missed and so on.
As long as you put some soldering paste on the tip of the iron and stroke the cable tops with it it will be much easier to attach them to the soldering points.
Good luck!

I did a similar mod to my stock wallaby headset. Not too dificult.
BTW If you are having too much trouble with the fiberous wire found in most headphones/handsfree setups and you can't get solder to stick to the "wire" then use a lighter to burn off the enamal coating. Be careful, wherever you see fire on the wire, is where it is now bare. SO, light just the end of the "wire" on fire and blow it out when it burns back far enough. Paste (aka flux) the burnt section and tin it like normal.....
IT"S NOT MY FAULT IF YOU SCREW SOMETHING UP!
It just took me a long time to figure that out, and thought some of you all might want to know!

Noob post - but just to make sense of it all (I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one).
So you're taking the provided handsfree headphone/microphone set that came with the JAM/XDA Mini/etc, chopping off the headphone part, adding any headphone set you really want (the Sony's or the iPod white buds if you so desired), soldering it to the circuit board in the microphone and you're good to go. The result would be stereo headphones attached to a working microphone (and this added bass/treble control???) that you can listen to MP3s on AND have phone conversations on without adjusting any cables. Is that correct?

Well lets assume some of us do not casually happen to know what a soldering tool is, let alone to posess one. How exactly would you do this? Can someone post a step-by-step for a non-soldering expert with list of (readily available) tools/supplies needed. Thats what we are lookng for rather than "dude, I did it too. Okay!!"

I know exactly what you mean.
Although I can do this soldering exercise, from experience I realise that on most guides, people give instructions like they expect everyone else to be at their level of technical knowledge/ability and most of the time, these guides are not well written. The issue here is that the writers seem to forget what it was like when they were new to the subject.
This causes mistakes, stress and confusion.
This is not a response to this thread/guide but a general observation from trying to wok with many guides on the internet.
I think you'd like a step by step guide in simple English and with pictures for each step.

A few things.
HEY YORK!!!! I accept large and small non sequential bills as payment. Any legal tender, preferably US$
And to the bitter people who got sarcastic all too quickly.... yes, we can, and will explain it. It is far easier to be general, and allow those who do not know whatever to ask for further details than to just go all out and explain anything/everything in great technical detail. Not angry, just retorting
EDIT>>> I completely changed the post, and made a wiki page describing how to do this for the lamen. Check it out HERE (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=handsfreethatdoesntsoundlikecra p)
And many thanks to ID64 for bringing up the thread and generating so much info exchange!!!!!!

I'm using PocketMusic. Yup this is the link http://www.pocketmind.com/pmfp.htm
There's another player called Pocket Player, http://www.conduits.com/products/player/ ,but i prefer PocketMusic coz it supported Winamp skins & more stable.
What is that ?, Do you have a link to that Software ? :).
What it the best MP3 player on the market ?.
Like Media Player, but lacks that you cannot use your thumb on the screen to handle it, and it doesnt support fastforward, otherwise i like it.
And agree with that the iPod skin really sucked !, whats the purpose with it ??, the nPod player was OK but had no playlist functions :(
Another successor...

For those people who want to have better audio, but don't want to sacrifice the plug of an expensive new set of headphones, this is what i did:
i had been wanting to do this for ages, but when the earphones of my handsfree died after a year of cycling, i just cut the wire above the mic/answer button of the handsfree of my XDA1 and soldered them into a normal 3.5mm headphone SOCKET. so now i can plug whatever earphones i like (i have an old pair of Sennheisers and my current one is a noise-cancelling Philips) into it, and even a cable to connect it to your home stereo - which gets unnerving for guests when the music stops for your phone to ring. LOUDLY :)
well anyway, Pros:
- keep expensive headphones intact for use with other devices/applications
- make XDA audio more useful with ability to connect to home stereos, car players that have an audio-in, etc.
- retain mic and call pickup/end buttons (dancing like the iPod silhouettes one moment, talking to mother the next, all with same headphones)
- amazingly better audio
- if you botch up the soldering job, its a $1 socket, not a $$ headphone
cons:
- earphone cable can get a tad long
- 1 more cable to organise on top of the earphone's cable
i'll be doing this with my XDA2's handsfrees soon, cos i cant get music to stream into my bluetooth headset (itech media player headset, if any gurus have a tip PLEASE help. this is daft why cant bluetooth be a simple I/O protocol instead of all these profiling stuff). so if there is enough interest i'll document the process and put it up somewhere...

Dude get yourself a pair of Sony MDR-E888 - these phones kick ass almost as much as Shure or Etymotic :)
They come in three versions -
MDR-E888 LP = 1.2m cord with L type plug + made in Phillipines
MDR-E888 SP = 0.4m cord with Straight plug + made in Japan
MDR-E888 MP = 0.4m cord with Micro plug (same as Jam) + made in Japan
The MP version is quite hard to find but it will plug straight into your Jam and doesnt have a mile of cord to get in the way - Your ears will thank me !!
Here is mine with a pair of Koss The Plug

teohjo, what skin were you specifically using (i.e. shown in that screenshot)? I am trying to find a music player which shows a list of songs on its main screen rather than just the song playing. Pocket music / pocket player / mort player all seem to fill the screen with player related parephernalia rather than just a list of my music + the play/stop/pause/etc buttons.

Hi, both PocketMucis and PocketPLayer can be skinned with Winamp 2.x skins, but i agree with you, for a PDA i also want BIG buttons and the songsplaying in a good list, and hardware mapped buttons, and seek+-10 sek aswell as playlist and ogg vorbis support, i like Pocket Player since that one have all that, would be perfect if on default settings one could remove EQ and increase size of the SongsPlaying----//SurfGuru

Hi,
I modified the standard headphones with the Sony MDREX51LP ones, and have found that the sound quality is very tinny... The treble is quite harsh and seems to lack a lot of depth in bass.
I have installed the DSP software, which helps a little, but these headphones normally sound very good, I guess I was wondering whether there is a problem with the soldering (doubtful as the sound is consistent and doesn't break/crackle which I would expect in the case of a bad solder) or is the Jam just normally like this when playing audio?

That's why you have to leave such a delicate work to the professionals :)
On serious note, check the polarity first and make sure that wires are isolated from each other.

Hi guys.
This Pocket Music prog is awesome, and the effects are pretty good. But after some usage, I conclude that the DSP applet from Xetra is still better than the extra bass function in PocketMusic. The latter does not handle super bassy tracks like Prodigy's Diesel power.
I still have Xetra DSP plugin probs. Whenever my PDA sleeps, the bass/treble values get resetted. Need to move the slider again to activate. Any Bros have workaround for this?
Thanks!!

Anders, great job with the SE headphones!
I just got my self a pair of those since my modded standard headphones seem to have lost contact at the plug, and the thick more-plastic-than-rubber cord from the mic and down sucks pretty much anyway. I think ill try to do what you did, even though the images are not totally clear to me...

We'll settle to disagree on that- I've been using it for a long time now and no problems at all- inc battery, sound quality and anything else.
My mates also have the equivalent product on their I-Pods (the I-Trip) and they all say its excellent.

I'm using the Expansys Adapter for the Magician with no problems at all. I would recommend that adapter for anyone who has no adapter yet. I was also using a normal HAMA Adapter 2,5 - 3,5 mm with no problems. It was originally for the NGage i think.
What is concerning the XDA2 Adapter: I think i once read that these are different to the Magicians jack. This could be the reason why you can't use them with the Magician.

Has anyone actually managed to use a Sony-Ericsson headset with the jam? Im seriously thinking of buying the HPM-70, but naturally im a bit worried about cutting the wires on a brand new headset...
I've seen the mods done here, and although they are nice, I think it would be great to use the HPM-70 mic, since i find the one that came with the jam has way to low volume (i basicly have to scream into it to be heard), plus the SE one has noicecanceling and so on.
However, the SE headset uses FastPort connectors, making it incompatible with the jam. Would it be possible to slaughter the original headset and use that 2.5mm plug instead of the fastport?

New Headset:
Expansys-price 46€ (~55$)
price at seidio-europe: 41 $ (~34€)
Same probleme when u wanna upgrade to 128MB.
"normal price" (looked around at xda-developers.com): 160 $ ~133€)
expansys (germany): 196 € (253$)
..OK..OK...I m not forced to buy at expansys ...BUT

Really? The channels are reverse? Even with the Expansys adapter? That's stupid. They could have reversed it there. I couldn't find an option in my music players on the magician to change the balance. I am too lazy to make my own soundfile.
What is considering the price: Well, they shipped it extremely fast to my home and the quality is quite good. Sure you can find cheaper adapters, I was using one before. But with that adapter, I had the problem that it was causing noise when it was moved inside the jack. The Expansys adapter only rarely does this. Don't know why. It also is shorter than normal adapter cables which is better for wearing it in the pocket.
If you want it cheaper, just get a normal 3 Pin Adapter instead. It also worked fine for me.

In BetaPlayer (TCPMP) you can reverse the stereo.
Just goto Tools > Audio > Swap left/right

i had been wanting to do this for ages, but when the earphones of my handsfree died after a year of cycling, i just cut the wire above the mic/answer button of the handsfree of my XDA1 and soldered them into a normal 3.5mm headphone SOCKET. so now i can plug whatever earphones i like (i have an old pair of Sennheisers and my current one is a noise-cancelling Philips) into it, and even a cable to connect it to your home stereo - which gets unnerving for guests when the music stops for your phone to ring. LOUDLY :)
well anyway, Pros:

How did you do that?? I was trying to do the same 3 days ago, and to present day I don't know how to connect the cables to make the volume control work! When I'm fading out the volume the the sound is corrupted, it's good only on maximum volume. Do you have the same problem?? If no, can you make the scheme how to connect the cables?
Of course i'm talking abaut 3,5mm jack connector connected to headset to keep mic, answer call button and volume control

I think that is better.
Just find the 2,5mm to 3,5mm adapter/cable.You can find it in the N-gage packet. So you can listen music with big normal headphones. It is very, very good.I do it.Now ilisten my 203 *.mp4's and its great...

Just wanted to thank the authors and contributors of the wiki for headset modification...i have never used a soldering iron before and decided to try it out, much to my wife's dismay...anyways, the project took about an hour and only $10 for the iron and solder...now i have a kicking headset with working mic as well..thanks so much guys for taking the time to give such detailed instructions...
