Can somebody tell me how to connect my MDA compact to my wlan router via bluetooth ? I've got a bluetooth access point (dlink DBT-900AP) that is connected by ethernet cable to my router/adsl modem.
I want to use email en internet access with my MDA Compact.
The standard built in bluetooth manager seems not to support this LAN access through bluetooth. Who can help me ?

The BT Lan Access Service using Microsoft BT Stack has been removed in the registry. It's been like that since XDA2.
I do not know if there is a corresponding driver available in MDA Compact such that you can re-enable the service via updated registry entries.
Anyone?

just add those to your device, apply the other things from msdn you've found and restart your device. then scan your ppc on the pc for open services...

I'm the happy owner of an MDA Compact and a Siemens blue2net access point. Indeed, the Microsoft Bluetooth stack refused to talk to the access point, which only offers the "Lan Access" profile.
I tried the suggested registry hack. Good idea, but sadly it does not work. It would appear that the "Lan Access" profile is simply not supported by the Bluetooth stack - it has not just been disabled by deleting a few registry entries :(
However, I found a workaround. After a few hours of fighting with the Microsoft stack, I downloaded a free Bluetooth stack from Toshiba (http://aps.toshiba-tro.de/bluetooth/) that supports the "Lan Access" profile. I did a full backup of my MDA Compact, adopted the "brace position", and prepared for a crash landing (aka hard reset).
After installing the Toshiba Bluetooth stack, I simply had to do a soft reset to activate it. Big surprise for me: my MDA still worked. Clicking the Microsoft Bluetooth icon in the status bar now told me that my toy had no Bluetooth support; however, clicking the new Toshiba Bluetooth icon brought up a different (and better, IMHO) Bluetooth interface. From here I could see the blue2net access point. Not only that - I could actually connect to it. The rest was piece of cake: add the Bluetooth device and configure a modem connection via it. I am now happily surfing the web via Bluetooth :D
The only caveats I have so far are these:
1) I now have a disfunctional Microsoft Bluetooth icon in the status line. I would like to get rid of that. Please drop me a note if someone knows how to do that.
2) When using the Toshiba Bluetooth stack, the diode above the screen does not blink blue when Bluetooth is active. A small price to pay for having internet access ;)

Hi,
I've one question:
(a) Apart from Internet access, do you have other BT functions working?
e.g. Headset/Handsfree, BT ActiveSync??
The BT Tray Icon can be removed by deleting this registry key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\BTIcon]
then reboot.
If you don't wish to remove the key, you can disable it by editing this parameter value under the registry key
change
"Dll"="BTIcon_Dll.dll" to
"Dll"="BTIcon_Dll.dll.disabled"
then reboot. When WM2003SE tries to load the Dll driver, it can't find it and therefore the MS BT system tray icon will not be activated.

Many thanks for this idea.
Does anyone know if there is a way to turn on/off the bluetooth radio once this stack has been installed ? I have the feeling that it is always on, consuming precious energy...
BTW has anyone tried headsets with this stack. Do they work ?

The set-up app (bt_setup) cannot be restarted without soft reset, I get following error "An error occured with th Buetooth Card Confirm that the card is working properly."

I installed the Toshiba bluetooth stack on my I-Mate Jam and it ROCKS - it includes ALL the functionality missing in the MS stack!
...BUT...
It is unstable as hell (I have experience all the bugs listed in this thread) and I am fairly sure this is due to the fact that both MS and Toshiba stacks try to use the same bluetooth hardware SIMULTANEOUSLY.
...SO...
has anyone figured how deinstall/reinstall the microsoft bluetooth stack on a Magician (I-Mate Jam, Qtek S-100, MDA Compact, XDA Mini)?

Hi cseilern, did you get IP working over an access point. I thoght that it worked but could only bond with the AP but couldn't get the connection to work " Bluetooth connection failed. Check status in Bluetooth Setup Utility"
Any further instructions would be appreciated.

Try deleting:
HKLM\drivers\builtin\bt_router (and any other BTxxxx that might be in there before installing the Toshiba stack)
and
HKLM\SOFTWARE\microsoft\bluetooth
and
HKLM\BTIcon
Remember to back-up (export) the contents of those trees before deleting them (so that you can import them if it is unsuccessfull). This worked on and XDAII when trying to get the Widcomm stack running without errors.
Any help getting BT PAN working with an access point using the Toshiba stack would be much appreciated.

As someone already mentioned this stack is really nice functionality and very quick connections.
Finally got IP working over my DLINK 900AP access point. It is now running very well.
The problem was that the stack was trying to configure the wrong profile for the connection.
In any case if anyone needs help fixing this feel free to drop me a PM, it's a bit involved.
The only remaining issue is that the stack is dying when the machine goes into standby.
Could it be that that the BT HW is being shut down on standby and taking longer to restart than the Toshiba SW itself (ie the SW is not finding the HW because it is still powering up) ? If so does anyone have any idea how one can delay restarting the Toshiba stack (or any other application/service/etc) for a few seconds on when it comes out of sleep mode?
Thanks,
M.

Hi folks,
I have been absent from the board for a couple of weeks because of too much work :( So sorry about the lack of responses from me. But now I'm back and will try to answer all the questions I can.
For zairyaab:
As aamp said, you should download the "Pocket PC 2002 / Windows Mobile 2003" version of the Toshiba stack, NOT the version for Windows XP. After extracting the archive, you should find a setup.exe that will install the software via Activesync. Alternatively, copy the ins_tosbt2003.CAB file onto you pda and execute it. Same result.
For henrylim and thinksmart:
I have not tested the Bluetooth stack with anything but my Bluetooth LAN access point. My (old) laptop does not have Bluetooth so I cannot test if Activesync works or not. Also, I don't have a Bluetooth headset.
For thinksmart and Zuhel:
I only know of one way to turn off Bluetooth with this stack - turn your pda off and back on. That consistently causes the stack to crash ... I know not funny. Bluetooth is turned back on by a soft reset.
For cseilern and thinksmart:
I have not had major problems with the stability of the stack (except from that it consistently crashes when turning the pda off). I tried making the registry changes suggested by thinksmart (after a hard reset) and then installed the Toshiba stack. The result is that I get the "An error occurred with the Bluetooth Card ..." message described by henryslim on an XDA II. I haven't found time to go through each individual registry change to see which one triggers the problem. However, the registry change suggested for removing the old status icon works perfectly.
In summary:
I'm sad to say that the stack is not an optimal solution due to the standby issue. If like me, you only want to use Bluetooth together with an access point, I think you can live with this issue. :) If you were to use it with other things, e.g. a headset, then this is a showstopper. :(
Best,
Lars

Guys I hope we can solve the power issue!
This stack rocks: auto active-sync connection (when getting into BT range) PAN and many other profiles, quick connection!
We have to find out a way to use this stack!

mmh we should really find out what crashes the BT stack...
or maybe just figure how to restart the BT stack, is there an exe file which is getting loaded on start up and then unloaded once the device is turned off? can we restart it?
or is it a dll which is loaded upon device start and maybe we can restart it using services.exe, regsvc or rundll?
i think figuring out how to restart the bt stack is easier and would do the job...

I played around a bit more concerning registry changes last night. Here are my conclusions.
The HKLM\BTIcon registry entry can safely be removed. It removes the status icon of the Microsoft stack.
Do not delete the HKLM\drivers\builtin\bt_router entry. Whenever I do this, the Toshiba stack fails to initialize and I have no Bluetooth at all.
Deleting the HKLM\SOFTWARE\microsoft\bluetooth tree of entries is a bit less clear. Good news first: after deleting this tree and resetting the machine the Toshiba stack does not crash when putting the PDA on standby. :D Without being absolutely sure, it seems to have a big negative impact on the battery life of the device when put on standby. :(
My wild speculation is that the bluetooth radio is not (completely?) switched off when the HKLM\SOFTWARE\microsoft\bluetooth registry tree is deleted. Hence Bluetooth keeps draining the battery. I ask the experts: is this at all possible? Can Bluetooth stay on when a device is on standby?
If only there was a way to manually switch Bluetooth on and off ... sadly this feature does not exist in the Toshiba stack.
/Lars

Great work man :) !
Now the problem is only to switch off the BT and add the blue led blinking!
Maybe switching off could be possible creating a program to manage the Toshiba stack.
Just like the "radio on-off" program created by a guy of this forum 8)

For YRLS:
Strange that the Toshiba stack doesn't run stable after removing the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Bluetooth. It does so very consistently for me. If I reinsert these registry entries, the Toshiba stack crashes again. When I once again remove them, the stack again runs stable. I wonder what we have done differently.
I believe to have nailed it down to a single registry entry by now:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Bluetooth\sy s
It contains two key-value pairs:
"DisableAutoSuspend"=dword:00000001
"COD"=dword:00920100
If this entry is in my registry (everything else under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Bluetooth has beed deleted) the Toshiba stack crashes. Deleting it makes the Toshiba stack run stable.
I have also tried changing "DisableAutoSuspend" to 0 instead of 1. No, that does not make the Toshiba stack stable.
Any bright ideas about what to do now?

Hi folks,
i have managed successfully to get my the toshiba bluetooth stick on my MDA compact. The MDA compact is working fine together with my acer bluetooth stick using the Private Area Network profile. Unfortunately the MDA compact doesn't want to work together with my dbt900ap bluetooth access point. The service description of dbt900ap bluetooth access point is "Private Ad-hoc Network Service which provides access to a network". The service description of my Bluetooth stick is "Network Access Point". When i try to start PAN and connect to my dbt900ap access point i get the error "An error occurred with the Bluetooth Card. Confirm that the card is working properly". With my acer bluetooth stick PAN works fine.So where is the difference between using PAN over my Bluetooth stick and using PAN over my access point ? Do i use the wrong profile, but my dbt900ap provides only the service mentioned above. Any help wpould be very appreciated.
I also compared the registry settings of the toshiba stack for both devices, here they are:

the weird thing is.. after a softreset the bt stack isn't loaded, i have to turn device off and on so that the toshiba bt icon appears on the today screen.
what else did you delete? or did you only delete HKLM\MS\BT\SYS? care to make a backup of your device - then hardreset and try to recreate what you've got there?

Hi folks,
its me again! I managed finally to get my mda working with my DBT900 access point. I changed the PSM value (see my message above for location in registry) from 0 to 15 (0xF). I investigated iformations about the meaning of the PSM value and found that the PSM value indicates which protocol to use for the connection and 15(0xF) is the value used for PAN !!! I dont know why this value wasn't configured automatically during the connection registration but after i changed it from 0 to 15 i started PAN and it works know. Of corse after standby the stacks still crashes but at least i am glad it works at all. So everyone who still have problems getting PAN working with toshiba stack check the PSM value in the registry.
Good luck !
