How to upgrade with the latest I-mate Jam ROM --GUIDE--

Firstly: HAPPY NEW YEAR !!


After some searching and trail by error testing I have sucesfuly upgrade my German T-Mobile MDA with the latest Jam rom from the I-mate website.

ROM version 1.03.00 WWE
Radio version 1.01.00
ExtROM version 1.03.141 WWE

I am not resposible for any damages !!! It should work perfectly !!


First Step:

You need to download the latest ROM (English version!!!).

http://www.clubimate.com/Support/ma_cdlsku2_arb_10300_141_10100_ship.exe

After download run it.
When you see a screen with "welcome to device software update utility", do nothing and go to your TEMP directory of windows. I you don't know where to look do a search for this file name: MaUpgradeUt.exe
When you have located the directory that hold this file copy the complete contents, 8 files. To a directory on your PC eg: c:\jam

Then cancel/close the "welcome to device software update utility"

Second step:

You need to find out the Operator code and language of you device.
If you have a MDA Compact from germany, the Operator code is: T-MOB101

If you have a German language ROM your code is: GER
If you have a UK ROM the Language code is: WWE

Third Step:

Download xda3nbftool.exe, and put it in the same directory as the 8 ROM files.

Fourth Step:

Build a batch file, name it change.bat or whatever you like in the directory where you put ROM files.

Paste the following in it:

xda3nbftool -x ms_.nba ms_.nbf 0x20040522
xda3nbftool -x nk.nba nk.nbf 0x20040521
xda3nbftool -x radio_.nba radio_.nbf 0x20040523
del *.nba
--------------------- paste the data above --------------------

This data is for a MDA Compact from T-mobile, with a UK language.
If you have a German Language change the WWE to GER in the file.

Fifth Step:

Go to a Command Promt and change to the directory you have places all the files in. Then run your batch file. It give's some errors maybe about a password but ignore those, it works !

Sixth step:

Run the MaUpgradeUt.exe program in the directory, it should start the UPGRADE. If not then you have not changed the language or operator code sucsesfully.

Last step:

If you have reset your device after the upgrade, be sure to skid the Extended ROM install. Install the apps you need manualy from the EXT-Rom. Or you will end up with some arabic nonsense. :)


Some tips:

If you want to find out your Operator Code and Language of you device:

In the directory you should have a file called: GetDeviceData.exe copy this file to your device. On the device run it, it looks like it does not work but that is fine! Now go with you PC to your windows directory on your device. You should find a file called DeviceData.txt there. Copy it to your PC and open it with notepad.

You should see something like this:

The PM10A is the Device code
The WWE stands for English language, if you have a different language it hould say so. German would be GER.
The T-MOB101 is the Operator code.

If you have different info there use it for the batch file. Language an operator code.

The sound was a bit better with T-Mobile's ROM but I know that imate is about to release a new rom fixing the sound quality and even improving the compatibility of the sandisk WiFi+256MB RAM SD card.
More than that at a friend's JAM who had problems with high distortion of the sound and the sound was coming and go we manage to fix it by opening his JAM and bending the speaker's contact legs so the force of the contacts of the speaker against the motherboard solved the coming and go of the speaker and fixed the distorion! It is a hardware issue but not a serious one! I guess we will be able to fix it easily in the nearest service center!

What would be de benefits in upgrading to this new Imate ROM?

My MDA works fine now, also I use a Sandisk 256MB+Wifi card without problems.

Sorry but I would never do it again at least not before JAM 6 will be released! :lol:
It was a nightmare! Not so hard but if you don't know what to do and you are living to be scared of breaking a part of the case then you would never do it again! Next time that someone else shows up brave enough to hand me his JAM for that kind of surgery I will make sure that I take some pictures! :wink:

Maybe there's a guide for real DUMMIES out there??

Yes. My files are also located in C:Windows:Prefetch

They also end with .pf

I only get 2 files when I do it the way described here.

It's good to know that I'm not alone. Where did you buy yours from?

I know. The problem is that procedure fries Sandisk cards and that's what I have.
That's why I'm trying to do it using this method (no need for cards or card readers).

Did you not backup your German ROM before you flashed the MDA with the English one?

Thanks people....am upgrading my wwe tmob MDA compact to imate....
you just need to download the imate.zip file from ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com and look for the magician folder....inside is the candy:)...the imate.zip

unzip the folder and inside this folder you execute change.bat

it shows some errors but it´s normal....
then you run MaUpgradeUt.exe and there you go...you got the imate rom inside:)

very easy....

pass and user is xda

we should always do like that...when someone finds can upgrade he should give the zip of his folder....instead of all the steps:) Thanks people:)

For those that are unable to find the 8 files and got something ending in .pf instead, here's a tip: you need to search for MaUpgradeUt.exe in "hidden files and folders" as well (option under advance). In windows XP, your temp folders are stored in your profile instead of the generic temp folder.

So here is the procedure of getting rid of T-Mobile's customization:

The whole proccess means you will do a hard reset and you will be installing everything from the beggining! So if you don't want that to happen you have to stay with T-Mobile's customization!

Step 1

Hard reset your MDA Compact (power+soft reset). Do all the neccesary steps (choosing your country and timezone) and when you get in the screen that tells you to tap the screen in order to start working have your stylus at the soft-reset hole tap the screen with your finger and do a soft reset IMMMEDIAELY AFTER YOU TAP THE SCREEN!

Step 2

Your MDA compact will restart without any customization it will be a clean Windows Mobile 2003SE. With the file manager go to the Extended ROM folder that is now visible and install the following files:

Caller_ID_WWE_RC10.CAB

Camera_Patch_WWE_B15.sa.CAB

GPRSMonitor_WWE.sa.CAB

Java_10.1.2.57_WWE.CAB

MMS_2.0.0.13_WWE.CAB

MMS_Settings_WWE_NL.CAB (This file will install the settings of T-Mobile NL but if you don't install it and then change the settings to your providers settings most probably will end up with MMS that does not work. So install those settings and change them accordingly to your providers settings)

Patch_101123.sa.CAB

Version_WWE_101124.sa.CAB

Zip_Magician_T-Mobile_WWE_B12.CAB

Those are all the files you need to install. For those who need intellipad and intellidialer they will also have to install the 2 files for those programs.

Don't know how this is possible, but since I upgraded the mda works on average 1 day longer (between 3-4 days stand-by, internet 1 hour, calls around 30-40 min).

Just imagine that the energy management works better in the imate ROM. But that's just a guess.

I did it and it all worked well except I always get a error message when i start my phone.

PegasSTA.exe
Cannot find 'PegasSTA' (or one of its compnents).
Make sure the path oand filename are correct and all the required libraries are available.

Anyone awere of this problem?
Also my phone locks regulary.

did you follow the instructions to make a hardreset after the upgrading process? Also earlier backups won't work (had a german rom before - the paths e.g. 'programs' etc. are different from the english version).

If nothing helps you still may redo the whole upgrade :( I had no preblems with the imate.zip provided by the xda-ftp...

Hi, I was the guest from the question above.
Well I unplugged my MDAc from my PC and instead of USB v 1.00 it went to Serial V 1.00

I tried to restart the MDAc, but it didn't went on. Tried hard reset, then it started up like normal (with old ROM). But when it was nearly finished it turned off and I can't get it to work again. Nothing happens....... the only thing it does is light up the LED when I connect it to the adapter or the USB cable..... (but the LED is red instead of orange)

When I put the back cover onto the PDA, it goes to bootloader mode again, but I can't get it out of it

EDIT - when I follow the instructions to the letter, it appears to be flashing!

I wish someone would do through forums and delete all the other confusing, hard to follow guides for flashing. Some are saying do a weird sort of reset, some are saying DO NOT use usb activesync etc.... they're just confusing me!!!!

People, follow the guide above to change ger to eng rom. That is all!

Hi, I received my new mda compact today of course German:( I changed the rom with your instractions with the ma_cdlsku1_wwe_10300_143_10100_ship.exe and after that I realized that a new rom is ready for download at imate. I downloaded it and try to install directly of course gave a country code error than I do the same change bat trick on that rom after starting the installation it is giving Error 123: Radio image file checksum error. Is there a way to upgrade the latest 10600 version? Thanks for your help in advance.

I too get a country error when trying to update to 106.

Bought the device from a friend and have several issues:

Phone speaker sounds tinny and distant, when someone calls me there is a one second delay from when I answer to when I can hear them and the speakerphone doesnt work for phone calls (only multimedia etc.)

Hoping a new Rom will fix these issues?? :?

Just asking btw... Wouldn't it be way easier to just change the DeviceData.txt on the PDA to the iMate JAM settings and somehow preventing the installation from running the GetDeviceData.exe which it obviously seems to be running?

That way you do not have to actually change the ROM files and it would work on different versions as well.

I have a big problem after having updated to 1.06 version.
I bough the german MDA Compact which had the 1.01 firmware.
I took the hacked MaUpgradeUt.exe file which ignores country errors and flashed the MDA Compact with the newest JAM firmware so my device was WWE (english) after reboot). Later I found this thread and tried to reflash my MDA with a hacked GER-firmware. But I only got the update window which shows me the site with the actual and the flashable firmware ... not showing me any version numbers. Any idea why I could reconfigure the firmware but got the code error with the original MaUpgradeUt.exe but the hacked MaUpgradeUt.exe didn´t updated my device to a german one???

The reason why I (speaking only for my intends) do these "discussion" is that I´m not able to update my device from a WWE (english) to GER (german) cause the hacked maupdateut.exe has a problem with the update when the source files are recoded from original language to german via the tutorial from this forum using the xda3nbftool.exe.
So ... to reach my goal having a german device I need help how this mess can be solved.

im afraid you cant change the language of a rom file. i also read something about changing the language in ppc-welt.info for hp devices but im still not sure if all languages are included in a single rom file? maybe i will give it a try. Could you point me to your 'tutorial'?

now to your issues: if i got you right, youre trying to flash 1.06 rom manipulated with xda3nbftool which solely works with roms <= 1.03 since htc (the original manufacturer) changed the encryption of the rom files. You only mess them up using this tool trying to change language id from WWE to GER - as a matter of fact the MaUpgradeUt (and luckily the cracked one also) dont allow update.

so for now wait until t-mobile releases their announced rom update or try to get used to the english rom.

I have recently undergone this excercise on a new German MDA Compact and after undergoing lots of reading here :D and trying a few things. I have decided to contribute this back to the community.

Note ensure you have a backup of your original ROM and your contacts and personal data in case of errors etc :) There are quite a few posts covering this in the forum.

1. Download the zip file at ftp link ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Magician/ and select the JamROM_111.132WWE_noID_mod.zip file

2. Download, Unzip and extract to a named folder for instance c:\imate

3. You should end up with about 6 individual files; ms.nb1, radio.nb1, nk.nb1 ruu.conf, ruu.dll, enterbl, getdevicedata and ROMUpgradeUt (this is the MAUpgradeUT_Noid file renamed so there is no need to download anything extra):
for info the maupgradeut is the file that runs the upgrade if you were an iMate user, however as a MDA user you need to get hold of the maupgradeut_noid file which could be obtained over the net or from the XDA developers site.

5. In ActiveSync, click on file and connection settings and untick the USB connection.(Very Important)

6. Connect the phone to the USB and turn the phone into bootloader mode (Camera & Power and Soft reset)

7. Run RomupgradeUt from c:\imate folder

7. The upgrade wizard will start, go through a few checks and proceed with the upgrade (normally you would eventually come up with the country ID error)

8. The process should then go through 3 stages which should last about 15 - 20 minutes.

9. Lastly do a soft reset and you should see your MDA German compact with a new WWE (WorldWide English) ROM

10. In ActiveSync, click on file and connection settings and tick the USB connection so that you can see the device for ActiveSync. Plug in USB and perform yor sync and start the process of moving your data and programs across.

PS I was think of compiling a short illustrated guide taking a lead from some Spanish posts on this matter, let me know what you think.

I've got an mda compact and i upgraded it to 1.12 i-mate jam uk. Put MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe to same folder with ROMUpgradeUt.exe and run noID several times until upgrade starts succesfully, no matter that it's size is bigger than ROMUpgradeUt.exe. But first, you should backup your rom.

Better use a real FTP client like CuteFTP if you want to get into the xda developers ftp site.

But you can also use Internet Explorer (yuck) and AFTER typing in this link (and getting a error message) ftp://xda:xda@forum.xda-developers.com/ go to File -> Login As, and change the username and password to: xda. I also had to check the "save password" box to get it working.

If using a real FTP client;
The address is: forum.xda-developers.com
username: xda
password: xda
That's all the settings you need to change.

Then browse the directories, go to Magician/Shipped_ROMS/ and there you will find the file "WWE_11200_128_11210_ship.exe"

That's how I did it. Please ask if you need more assistance.

YES - using this guide you can upgrade to any downloaded rom - just unzip all the files and start the opgrade with the MaUpgradeUt_noID - tool, not the original MaUpgrade-file!.

Just wanted to thank everybody for their great work and tips. I updated my German "MDA Compact" to the desired English Version (My wife is not so familiar with the German language and was desperated already). :lol:


Just would like to mention following:

1.) To get the necessary files I had to do my FTPs manually to xda´s site (IE or GetRight couldn´t download them).

2.) I used “WWE_11200_128_11210_ship.exe”

3.) NemesisDE´s tutorial I liked best. But I had to use “MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe” instead of “ROMUpgradeUt.exe”. It ended up in an error message according language problems when using the “ROMUpgradeUt.exe”.

4.) I did a ROM backup before using “romupdate.exe” and “ntrw.exe” (489 MB!!!).

Try right mouse click and extract the exe (I am using WinRar) to your folder. As mentioned, I used MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe instead of ROMUpgradeUt.exe.

O.k. I'm seriously having a lot of trouble uograding my ROM.
I currently (or use to) have:

Radio version: 1.00.10

I'm trying to upgrade to a dutch qtek rom:
MA_DT_WWE_DutchRetail_11200_550_11200

But there seems to be no end to the error messages.
I was very safe about everything:
I made a Spritebackup of everything;
A ROM backup using the tools from the FTP
But the upgrade constantly fails somewhere. I'v had 112 error messages, 113 error messages and 114 error messages. I've tried various MAupgradeut_noId. But like I said I get error messages constantly.
And the moment varies too. It happens at the Radio upgrade or the Extended ROM upgrade or the CE Rom upgrade. Can anybody, please tell me what to do? Because I can't use my MDA at all now since ít can only get into bootloader mode :cry:

O.k. I did it. It was either a reboot of my PC or charging the battery with the adapter voor 1,5 hours or a combination of both that seems to have done the trick. I can finally use my MDA Compact.. .eehh... Qtek S100 again :lol:

I´ve succesful upgrade my XDA mini (Ger) to WWE 1.12, thanks to you guys.

But now I have another problem. I´m using O2 Genion, with Homezone, and after I install the WWE, I can´t see the Homezone Icon anymore.

Any one have the same problem? Is the homezone still there, and it´s just the icon, or is it that my Homezone completely disappear?
What cab file must I install, in order to receive the Homezone icon again?
Or do I have to reinstall Windows Ger again?

For example, if you want the last updated extended rom to QTEK S100, you may choose Magician folder -> Extended_Roms folder, and in the botom look for QtekS100_WWE_1.12.550.zip file, or:

for the last updated Radio rom:

As far as i know this are lastet versions:

Radio Version: 1.13.00
ExtRom Version: 1.12.550 WWE

I´m not sure where is the tutorial..., you must search again.
I´m not sure if it exist only for radio rom...

In short:

Download the 3 files in my example -> extract all to the same directory -> run the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe file -> follow the onscreen instructions...

If eveything went well, you should have everything updated whith tha lastet version.

As you may see on other threads, this may not work to all people.

And be carfull, you may damage your device.

It seems that I can't upgrade the ExtRom anymore. It only keeps getting stuck at 5%, even with different roms. Then, within minutes, Error 113: ExtRom upgrade error. The other Steps are done correctly, but even if I have a Qtek PDA with Qtek radio and OS I keep getting the Imate logo (from the entire first correct upgrade). And the ExtRom seems to doesn't exist anymore.
However I can use it normally, without any restriction. But I really want to restore it, in the case of a BigStorage trick...

I followed all the instructions correctly (I have also upgraded many times the Radio and OS without probs). Is this the possible response from bad clusters? Is there any workaround?

I was only trying to copy my ROM from my SD to my Desktop using command ntrw read myxdamini.nb1 F: where F is the drive letter of my sd card.

Well as you will read below I had a problem trying to install the Upgrade, but at the end It suddenly worked. So this text will have two parts. The first describes what I did and all the errors, and the second will tell what I was doing when it worked.

I tried to Upgrade my O2 xda Mini German version to English version and had one problem, when trying to install with the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe file. The Bootm line erro message was:
“Error 150: Rom Upgrade Utility Error:

Please get proper ROM Upgrade Utility and try again”

I will now describe exactly what I did including the error message in order to help people with the first steps and maybe find a saver that could explain why it went wrong.

1. I downloaded the file at: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Magician As I wished to use a Englsih version (WWE) I downloaded the UK version (last one (with the UK flag...)): ftp://xda:xda@xda-developers.com/Magician/Shipped_ROMS/UK_11200_131_11210_ship.exe
I saved it in a folder called C:\Documents and Settings\Hans\My Documents\Mobile\Rom Upgrade


2. I tried the upgrade by pressing the file: UK_11200_131_11210_ship.exe, with my XDA mini connected. It did not work (as expected..), but it is always good to try the "normal procedure". The error message was: “Error 120: Country ID error” (but if you did already “uncheck” the USB connection box in the ActiveSync you will get error: 101 Connection Error). Afterwards I disconnected my XDA mini again.

3. I pressed again (the "UK_11200_131_11210_ship.exe"), pressed "next" and waited it to "extract" all files and do some "check procedures".

4. I left the "Device Software Update Utility” open and went to "Search" (Start/ Search) to hunt the just extracted files. To do that, I searched for the folder that contained the file: “ROMUpgradeUt.exe”. I found it at: C:\Documents and Settings\Hans\Local Settings\Temp\pftA.tmp. Together with other 8 files:
EnterBL.exe
GetDeviceData.exe
ms_.nbf
nk.nbf
radio_.nbf
RUU.conf
RUU.dll
UI.dll

5. Copied these files to my Rom Upgrade folder: “C:\Documents and Settings\Hans\My Documents\Mobile\Rom Upgrade” and closed the "Device Software Update Utility” windows. (When you do that the Temp files will disappear)

6. As suggest I downloaded the “MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe” at ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Magician/Tools/MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe as suggested and saved it in my Rom Upgrade folder: “C:\Documents and Settings\Hans\My Documents\Mobile\Rom Upgrade”

7. Connected my PDA, with the USB connection option of the ActiveSync unchecked (so he will NOT synchronize)

8. Pressed the “MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe”, and “Next”after working for a while it poped with a strange information:
“Your device software is about to be updated from:
Device CE image version :
Device Extended image version:
Device Radio image version:
To:
CE image version :
Extended image version:
Radio image version:

While the update…………………….”
Yes, the information after the “:” was blank! I guess it should not be, but it was…. Anyway I pressed “Upgrade” and got the following message:

AND NOT A COUNTRY ERROR AS EXPECTED….. disappointed I closed the window…

9. Ok it did not work in one way, so lets try another way. I used the procedure in the start of this tread http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=14973, which looked a little bit more difficult but worth a try, as I had already done the first step (download the ROM file, and the site fom I-mate did not work) and started right with the second. I connected my XDA mini saved the “GetDeviceData.exe”in “My documents” in my XDA mini, turned on my XDA mini, netered my domcuments, pressed twice on the file, NOTHING happened (NO ERRO MESSAGE!) entered the windows folder in my device and copied the “DeviceData.txt” from “Windows” to “C:\Documents and Settings\Hans\My Documents\Mobile\Rom Upgrade”. I got the following info:
“PM10A 0 A GER R O2___102 1.12.01 0 1 1.12.144 1.12.00 GER”
(Language: GER, Distributer: O2___102, Model: M10A)

10. Downloaded: “xda3nbftool.exe” at http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=2273 and saved it at my Rom Upgrade folder: “C:\Documents and Settings\Hans\My Documents\Mobile\Rom Upgrade”

11. I downloaded the “Chage.zip”at http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=2272, extracted it to my Rom Upgrade folder, and did ”Edit”it (second option if you press the file with the right button”) and changed the Mobile operator: T-MOB101 to O2 operator: O2___102, which is my “Operator”(actually my mobile operator is TIM (in Brazil), but I believe the irhgt information is O2 (because this is the brand written in my XDA Mini. Leading to the following result:

12. I saved the new “Change,bat” file and pressed it twice with my mouse. A prompt opened and a procedure was run (to fast to see what happened.. I believe it was ok..), but I got NO error message.

13. Finally I connected my Xda Mini to my PC, with the USB option dismarked, pressed the “MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe”, and “Next”after working for a while it poped with the strange information again:

Ok, so I was in My room, sad that nothing worked and that I have not delivered some worked that I had to do for nothing… and started pressing the “Change.bat”about 21 times… I plugged my device WITH THE USB OPTION TURNED ON and pressed the “MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe”… my father comes in my room and suddenly I see the holy message: “Error 120: Country ID error”, while my dad comes to see what I was doing I said: “I did it it worked”… he did not understand how a “error” message could be good, but I knew better… and as Wiki suggested I tried again… and the miracle started: “Updating ROM Stage 1”… I was tense, I heard many people saying that they had destroyed there phones by doing so, but I continued, I knew that the 1% is always hard, but it came quick, I knew at 5% one did already have major issue, but it went thoruh it without problems, until I got to 99%.. and then it stopped for ours.. but it worked a 100%.. and I was ready to cheer, when the message came: “Stage 2”… I was totally tense again.. I tough it was a good moment to start smoking, but I managed to keep calm and went to take a shower, when I came back is was done! I had a new phone!!!! Just did a hard boot: Pressing “Power+Camera+Reset (with stylus)” and it was done the i-mate symbol came to my display and a english speaking windows asked me about my configurations…
Ok, I know that this last part of my description was not necessary, but it feels good to let it out….
So my conclusion was something was different on this last try, I have 4 options:
1. The continuous pressing of the “change.bat” file did something…. (I never got a error message)
2. The option for the USB connection needs to be turned ON
3. My father brings me luck…
4. Be my guest…..

I believe my description above is quite detailed and might help some people as I DID NOT MAKE BACKUP (I have no sd card and no sd reader.. my syster did promise me to bring it to me on Christmas…), I don’t dare to try it again for the purpose of answering the question above.
VETERNAS: I you know what the cause is, please post here to help the next person.

I hope this post was of help for some of you. As I am new here I do not dare to change the Wiki, but If a Veteran believes this description might be helpful I’ll pass him over all my autor rights……..

JeffThe sound was a bit better with T-Mobile's ROM but I know that imate is about to release a new rom fixing the sound quality and even improving the compatibility of the sandisk WiFi+256MB RAM SD card.
More than that at a friend's JAM who had problems with high distortion of the sound and the sound was coming and go we manage to fix it by opening his JAM and bending the speaker's contact legs so the force of the contacts of the speaker against the motherboard solved the coming and go of the speaker and fixed the distorion! It is a hardware issue but not a serious one! I guess we will be able to fix it easily in the nearest service center!

Well as you will read below I had a problem trying to install the Upgrade, but at the end It suddenly worked. So this text will have two parts. The first describes what I did and all the errors, and the second will tell what I was doing when it worked.


The only thing you possibly forgot to do - is to move your deice in rom-update mode (press Power+Camera, then Reset, then release Power+Camera, then release Reset)
You will see black screen :) nothing :)

Then conect your device to USB and run bla-bla-ba_NO-ID.exe :)

Guess you need to read a lot more to get accustomed to all tech.talk.

- MDA = Mobile Data Assistent
- WWE = an English rom, there's Arabic, BRA, FRA, GER, ESP, ITA & CHS as well. Each in a specific language.
- BT = Blue Tooth
....

Take a look at the ftp xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com under Magician you can find all sorts of shipped-roms (roms which are provided by the different telco's), can be that there's one from your telco as well. The type of rom you've got is shown in the 'device information' under the settings menu & you can see it each time you soft-reset in the splash.

Update to a rom in a different language or from another provider usually results in an error (120 country id) most upgrade instructions provide help to avoid this error.

The ext-rom is a hidden piece of your rom, which contain cab files with extra apps. & settings provided by your telco they 'brand' your magician.

Then there's the BIG Storage hack, with this you concatenate the ext-rom to your intetnal storage folder to gain 20MB extra. You'll loose all cabs of course. Don't do it right now, get to learn your device better first.

There's more but start with understand this.

Upgrade: I have restored the Qtek logo from the spalsh screen trick BUT I'm still getting stuck at this damn 5%... It drive me crazy!

Oh, and there is also RF leakage, that prevents me to use it as a phone... Beside it, I want to restore it completely to send it to repairs.

small strange behaviour....after upgrading with ITALIAN ROM, everything is working great...but i noticed when i reset the machine (SOFT Reset) i got after proper booting (with IMATE logo at beginning) an error:

Application "IMATE Configurator" is not compatible with Your device but only with IMATE devices. Deinstall it from Your unsupported device.

It's probably from the ext-rom, if so never mind you don't need it. Best is to skip the ext-rom from executing with the hard-reset & then soft-reset when the default WM wallpaper shows trick.

Hi guys! In the past I was the owner of Qtek 2020 and I was able to upgrade it easly. Now I will probably buy O2 xda mini or T-Mobile MDA Compact from germany. And I will need do upgrade it to english. And now i'm little confused with all the different versions od upgrades on XDA FTP server. I can fin O2 WWE version of extended ROM, also for T-Mobile and for Qtek S100. So which version should I choose? Operators but in english language or S100 WWE? And what are shipped roms? What to choose and execute so that the result will be 100% sucess? :)

Isse simple,

A shipped-rom is a rom from a provider/telco. Such a rom contains a separate part, the ext-rom, which will brand your device with operatorsettings, wallpaper, logo's, splash-screen etc.

Changing language isn't a problem, see previous posts for links.

For now T-Mobile has the latest WWE rom for their MDA-compact. Well their all magician's & compatible so any rom will do. Visit the wiki too...

Sometimes my sound volume in a call is vey low too, usually it reverts back after one or to soft-resets. Odd. Depends of course on what you claim to be low...

i have i-mate JAM (NEW) with 128 RAM. Can i use i-mate JAM rom version 64MB RAM up to version 128MB RAM. I think it same computer have much ram but i fear JAM dead after up. Some body have a idea 4 me! thanks

Sure you can use it. Make a good backup first of all your data & ext-rom cabs & preferably make a rom backup too.

If you're too scared don't do it, it can go wrong (don't know the succes rate) succes is more likely though.

Try charging it fully first, before connecting usb.

Instructions for SD flash (first part is backup which you've done already):

Instructions:
- get ntrw.exe from the ftp
- Download romupdate from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=7510- Download the Hexedfull from the ftp
- get a SD-card > 64MB
- make backup of everything you want to keep from your magician & SD-card. everything will be wiped!!
- fully charge your magician
- uncheck usb connection in Act.sync on your PC
- put your magician in Bootloader (camera & power & soft-reset at the same time for a few seconds) wait till screen fades & reads 'serial v1.0x'. Screen is very dark since backlight is of.
- connect usb, now the screen reads 'usb v1.0x'
- start romupgrade on your pc
- pick the magician connection in the listbox, wces something I belief
- now a screen pops up
- type d2s in this screen
- follow progress on pc & magician
- wait till checksum finishes
- get SD from the magician & put it into a cardreader. DON'T FORMAT!!!
- put ntrw in C:\
- start a command window
- type on commandline: ntrw read myrom.nb1 [sd driveletter]:
- follow progress
- error at the end is normal
- make a copy of myrom.nb1

Restore:
- type on commandline: ntrw write myrom.nb1 [sd driveletter]:
error at the end is normal
- put the SD in your magician
- now it should read 'press power to flash'
- press the power button
- watch it reaches 100% - checksum will always fail
- reset & hopefully enjoy the new rom

But I don't know about errors in Arabic roms.

Backup the existing rom goes like this:
- get ntrw.exe from the ftp
- get romupdate http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=7510- get a SD-card > 64MB
- make backup of everything you want to keep from your magician & SD-card. everything will be wiped!!
- fully charge your magician
- uncheck usb connection in Act.sync on your PC
- put your magician in Bootloader (camera & power & soft-reset at the same time for a few seconds) wait till screen fades & reads 'serial v1.0x'. Screen is very dark since backlight is of.
- connect usb, now the screen reads 'usb v1.0x'

Upgrading to 1.13WWE is simple with the wiki instructions http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=MagicianRomUpgrade

But before upgrading make a backup of your ext-rom cabs. They contain, among others, your operator setting for voicemail & gprs!

To do this;
- make a backup of your data etc
- hard-reset
- just after the message 'tap screen to begin using your device' you put tge stylus in the reset hole.
- now tap the screen & reset it as soon as the blue wallpaper is shown
- backup your ext-rom as it is visible now
- restore data backup

If you don't need Arabic localizations you can go for WWE, otherwise I advise you to keep your current rom.

It's ok oltp, no probs. Btw, would you know what the cab does? Improves the batt life? I don't remember loading it but I didn't get any probs with batt life either. Anyway, I just loaded it now and see how it goes.

I think my battery-life has improved with rom 1.13, could be placebo, compared with rom 1.12. Since I always loaded that cab & never ran any tests to really measure its effects, it's hard to prove.
But I'm happy with it, hope you'll be too.

It´s a while ago since I checked here the forum for information after I upgraded my MDA (see here in the same threat). I never realized a SMS problem since my wife was using the MDA, but it is definately not able to receive SMS. Does anybody else has that problem? Is it possible that the version I upgraded to had some bugs?
Which newer ROM-upgrade would you recommend to run a stable, fully working english MDA (file name and location please)?

The 1.13WWE from T-Mobile is the most recent rom for now & maybe forever since the Magician is getting outdated.

I'm pretty sure I can receive a SMS with this rom, but I was able to do that with 1.01WWE & 1.11WWE as well. I did have had your receiving problem too when I hard-reseted my device & restored a backup with Sprite including all my mail accounts/databases. Did you happen to do that? It's a known bug in older Sprite versions. Very easy to recreate, but it doesn't happen when you got a fully installed device (& the mail account settings & databases are up-to-date) & you restore a backup with a one from let's say a few days old. It seems to happening only when restoring to an empty device.

If you didn't do such a thing I can inly advice you to backup everything, hard-reset your device & send an sms to it while it's still plain WM2K3 to make sure the receiving problem persists. If so you can always upgrade to 1.13WWE & try again. If the problem then still isn't solved I do hope your device is still covered under warranty.

BTW what happens when you put in another sim in the magician or the sim in another phone?

Oh, cool people are using other stuff now? :roll: Living here in the (almost) third world Brazil will guarantee, that my "old" MDA will be fancy even in one or wo years. But with the next trip to Europe I might update as well. :wink:

Yes, actually I have Sprite backup installed. How can a backup program impact the SMS function? Anyway, do you think an uninstall will fix it or do you recommend a hard reset? I think Sprite was one of the first progs I installed right after doing the ROM upgrade (and actually the ROM update was done right after I bought the phone in Germany). I believe, my Sprite created the problem. Warranty is still on the device but I wouldn´t be able to get it to and from Germany without headache.

Did that already. All my 3 different SIM cards (different states of Brazil) work fine when sending and receiving SMS in my other cell phone but not in the MDA.

There's no need to de-instal Sprite. Just follow this:
- create a complete backup in exe format with sprite
- hard-reset the magician
- test if sms receiving is possible
- restore the backup with sprite, but don't restore Email, uncheck that part (somehow Sprite corrupts some settings, you can read more about that here http://spritesoftware.com/en/personal/support/version_history/Release_Notes.htm look at the bug reports for version 3.0.0)
- Test receiving of SMS again to see whether this has changed by the restore.

Hopefully everything works now.

- create a complete backup in exe format with sprite
- hard-reset the magician
- test if sms receiving is possible
- restore the backup with sprite, but don't restore Email, uncheck that part (somehow Sprite corrupts some settings, you can read more about that here http://spritesoftware.com/en/personal/support/version_history/Release_Notes.htm look at the bug reports for version 3.0.0)
- Test receiving of SMS again to see whether this has changed by the restore.

Hopefully everything works now.

I'm running a Dopod "Magician" with an Imate JAM firmware (1.12.00 WWE, 1.12.10 Radio, and 1.12.128 WWE ExtROM). The previous owner said that he had to do the BootLoader method to upgrade the firmware.

I tried to do an upgrade with the T-Mobile 1.13, using the instructions in the Wiki. I downloaded the 1.13 from the XDA-DEV FTP site, from the SHIPPED_ROMS directory (WWE_11300_550_11200.zip).

I ran the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe utility, but I never got the country error. Instead, it brought me to the upgrade screen, but it didn't display any information about my device. When I clicked on Upgrade, I got a 150 Error.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have a Qtek S100 which I have been quite satisfied with. However my supplier did not supply a newer ROM than 1.12. I wanted a newer ROM to see if the sound quality and camera would improve, which I understand the 1.13 does (?)

So after an accidental hard reset I figured why not try an upgrade, I had lost what I could loose anyway.. no big deal though, a recent sync had been done, and most files are on SD card.

Upgrading went smooth, following the instructions here. Haven't tested much but no problems so far.

My new setup: (old)

I have a Mda Compact with ROM version 1.13.00 WWE, ROM date 08/18/05

I have purchased a 2GB Sandisk Ultra II sd card, but it doesn't work, the phone ask if I want to format the card, and when I clcik yes it states "Card has been successfully formatted", but the Card isn't visible in file explorer.

I have also tried formatting within windows to both FAT & FAT32, but still same mesage (as above).

I was wondering if there is a newer ROM out for the MDA compact (UK) or whether changing the ROM to the imate ROM, would solve the problem.

and i put my sd card kingstone 1gb in to reader and get message unreadable – properties from card shows me RAW type and there is nothing on my card

when I start ntrw only get message

Hi there,

You can use the mentioned rom, without relocking your device. The sim lock isn't touched by the radio-, os- or ext-rom upgrade.

And yes there's a thad about changing the boot (or splash) image to a one you like much more. Unfortunately I can't remember the threads name, but I think you should be able to find it with a search on 'splash screen' in the magician forums.

My previous experience with I-Mate, having bought a used JAM, was that I now had to buy a membership and get an ID and Password to get anything.

Does anyone have the file OFF SITE from the club, or does anyone have a password, yada yada?

Barring all that, has anyone built a better ROM than that? Is there a kitchen available for it?

When I had an I-Mate Jam I went there to get just an Owner's Manual and they wanted a membership for that alone, and while I don't recall how much it was (I believe it was about $40) I knew it was too much for an Owner's Manual. Then I upgraded to a Cing. 8525 and upgraded it to WM6 and the imei on it won't let me in to the club either cuz it is not an I-Mate phone, and I still don't want to part with the money either. I passed the Jam on to my partner - who is not in this room with me - and I am trying to find solutions and upgrades for him since he is having trouble with it . . . so . . . here I am. :confused: Wishing I had better and working with all I got.

Hi,

I agree $40 is too much for just being able to download a newer rom. So I suggest you read this first http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=MagicianRomUpgrade & make a copy of everything you would like to keep. Like contacts, appointments, important documents etc. Then take a backup of all the cab files stored on the Jam's ext-rom for later use.

Then download t-mobile's 1.13WWE rom from http://www.t-mobile.nl/zakelijk/media/download/MA_TMNL_11300_132_11200_Ship.exe

Treat this rom as you've read in the wiki & use the maupgrade_noid to flash it to your jam.

You can use any WWE rom for changing the language from German to English. But indeed pls read the wike about upgrading with maupgrade_noid. The process is fairly simple then. You can use the link from t-mobile, you'll get the 1.13WWE with some extra stuff which some/most people don't like. You can skip that from being installed on your device by giving it a hard-reset after the rom upgrade & when you finished the init. procedure (you know 'tap the screen to start begin using your device') give it a soft reset as soon as you see the default windows background. Now you got a plain WM2003SE Magician with the latest known WWE rom.

Hey, ok this is my problem, I have the PM10C version, the north american version, but now im in Pakiland, so I wanted to know how I could get the Generic Version on here. Is that even possible?
I saw a Jam with the upgraded PM10A version and it had a band option to change from North America to Europe and all that. Thats what i need to use the providers here. So any ideas? Im going to upgrade to the newest version of the PM10A and see if that helps in the mean time. Thanks in advance to whoever responds :)

Oh and here is the Details for my phone:

I'm new at PPC's upgrading and I need an advice about upgrading my PPC Vodafone VPA Compact. In the HTC_Phone Models table which lists known HTC PPC models and vendors there's no info on Vodafone VPA Compact. On HTCClub web page this device is categorized as Magician Refresh. Is this device the same as Magician (besides RAM size) and could it be upgraded with the same ROM's as the Magician?
I'm trying to upgrade because my PPC is in German and I want it to be in English.
I want to use "OS 1.12.00 / ExtROM 1.12.920 / Radio 1.12" acording to:
