Hi All,
I have browsed this site and the Internet and came up with many well-meant advice for solutions that do not work. I want to connect my Windows XP SP2 laptop via the USB port to the Internet using a Wallaby and GPRS.
Does anyone reliably know what is required to get this to work?
Here is what I came up with so far:
Conclusions:
IrDA is too slow.
Bluetooth (if supported by hardware) does not work reliably (defined as 10 hours continuous use.)
USB only works with Audiovox Typhoon
The problem seems to be that WModem is unable to emulate a USB Modem with Windows XP SP2.
Here is what I tested:
Config 1: (does not work)
Hardware: T-Mobile US ancient Wallaby
OS: Pocket PC 2002 O2 3.17.03 G324e4
Application: Wmodem 1.04 from ROM, select Serial
Interface: USB cradle
Host: Windows XP SP2
Config 2: (does not work)
Hardware: Siemens Wallaby
OS: Windows Mobile 2003 T-Mobile 4.01.16 G324e4
Application: Wmodem with drop-down, select USB
Interface: USB cradle
Host: Windows XP SP2
Config 3 (does work)
Hardware: Audiovox Typhoon
OS: Windows Mobile 2003
Interface USB Cradle
Host: Windows XP SP2
Note: works unreliably with Blutooth
Incoming calls may go to voice mail
Config 4 (works unreliably)
Hardware: HP iPAQ h6315
OS: Windows Mobile 2003
Application: Bluetooth driver
Interface: Bluetooth
Host: Windows XP SP2
Note: unknown if USB is supported
Expect 15 minutes to an hour up time
some computer apps disconnect link or fail to communicate
How connection is established:
Start the phone with a GPRS-enabled SIM (T-Mobile US)
Start the application and hit start/activate (leave phone with application displayed)
Plug USB cable into computer
Computer discovers "USB Audio device"
Install driver from specific location, have Disk, use USBMDM.inf file
"HTC USB Modem" appears in Start - Control Panel - Phone and Modem Options - Modems
Add connection:
Start - Control Panel - Network Connections
Create a new connection - Connect to the Internet - Set up my connection manually - Connect using a dial-up modem -
ISP Name: whatever - Phone number: *99# - Anyone's use - clear both check boxes - Finish
Connect:
Double click ISP Name in Network Connections, click Dial
