My GF got her Mini on 1/9, and initially, we felt the phone sound quality is bad, but not to the extend that we'd return it or exchange it. But just yesterday, the earphone of the Mini just stops working.. No matter what I try, there's just no sound coming thru from the build in earphone, although it works fine when we plug in a headset.

I tried everything and even hard reset but still couldn't get the earphone to work again. It really seem like a hardware rather than software problem now. Is it fair to ask for a exchange than fixing it? A less than 3 weeks old well protected phone should not have hardware issue like this and I just don't feel good knowing a 3 weeks old phone needs fixing... Am I asking too much? Will O2 exchange phone because of this? Should I demand an exchange? :(

I don't know what consumer legislation is where you are, but the norm with most retailers in the UK is 28 days for an exchange a new device, after which you can elect for a repair or exchange for "refurbished" goods. Opting for a repair normally loses you the right to exchange.

Just to let you know... o2's policy is to exchange up to 28 days and repair after that...

where did you get a mini on o2 though? my branch hasn't even got a release date yet!

There is an issue with some xda where the headphone socket jams after using the headset, insertion/removal/insertion or jiggling of something in the socket often frees it, or maybe a squirt of switch lubricant.

I'm in Asia, the Mini has been out since Dec.. And it's definately not the headphone socket jams, if it's the socket jam, then I should hear the button clicks sound from the headset right? Right now, if I pull the headset, I can heard button clicks from the phone itself, but just no voice from the earphone :(

I hope the policy is the same worldwide, guess HTC really should have tighten their QC specifications :(

Don't you have a warranty?

1 or 2 years. They should repair or exchange for free.

or maybe a squirt of switch lubricant.
DON'T DO THIS. Switch lubricant is oil based and because it's very fine and sprayed under pressure, it gets onto every nook and cranny. If it gets under your screen it will ruin it.

I would demand an exchange for a new handset if I were you.
I have an XDA2s that was worn away the paint quite badly due to the poor design of the keyboard slider, also the keyboard slider wobbles... I'm also thinking of contacting O2 about this, but I fear they will say they can't do anything about the wear, and I will need to send it off for the slider to be fixed - because I have had the phone for about 3 months.

... and squirting your device full of lubricant will almost certainly invalidate your warranty.

Those aren't my words, they are from the threads I posted links to.

Maybe I should've quoted rather than copied.
