Question on checking mail on imap server

I'm wondering if there is a way for me to check my imap server and only get email that is NEW/UNREAD rather than all email. I can get and send mail now, but I hate downloading ALL mail.

Any thoughts?

Not with the default IMAP client. You need a third-party IMAP client that respects the \Seen and/or \Recent flags.
