I ve just found this in DOPOD CHINA hompage, I had test it with my XDA II mini, and it works

It should work for other pocketpc phones
Nevertheless, it's in chinese...
just unzip the file and run the 'backupsms.exe'in your ppc phone,
on the right bottom corner u can access the pull down menu,
u ll then see 3 options,
top one = ABOUT
middle one = SMS>
bottom one = CLOSE
Press the SMS>
there ll be 3 items,
top = backup
middle = restore
bottom = delete
have FUN

i made some little translation of the application above ..
since i also found it to be very useful
i partially translated it base on your explanation or translation ..
but it still need lots of translation .. since im not a chinese and cannot read one ..
i only test it with himalaya ..

Hi , anyone still have the software PPCBackupSMS.zip?? I need to backup my old 818 pro Dopod SMS. All the above links are all outdated and couldn't access to the files anymore. Appreciate it anyone of you have it can post it again!! Thanks!!

to back up any pim data, you can use either ms myphone or pimbackup. you'll find both in the thread linked in my signature

Yep, as chef said, PIMbackup works great...and will work on pretty much any Windows Mobile phone so you can easily import your SMS to another phone :)
