View Full Version : Permanent Camera fix (No Snow Effect)
kta
18th April 2005, 10:55 AM
Camera settings (to remove snow effect):
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/HTC/Camera/AppDefSettings/General
Set Contrast - 5, Brightness - 6, Saturation - 3, Hue - 5,Sharpness - 3
These settings will not reset themselves after closing the camera app or doing a soft reset! They become defaults.
Hope you find it useful!

To bad that won't work on the XDA II the camera needs a lot of help too. Does anyone know of a fix for the XDA II?

Emil, the output shot will be better as well!
Daredevil, the values are +ve, ie. 5, 3, etc. Maybe I should have used a ":" instead of a "-".

You don't need to go into the registry...
fire up the camera application and click the settings button
click on the tools menu and choose adjust...
the settings are in the drop down box...
In this way you won't have to meddle with the registry... ;)

Hey kta, I tried it out, just wanna let you know the results are amazing! :o
I had given up on this camera (and just about the phone as a whole) especially when my friend checked with someone working with doopod said that this is a hardware (lens) problem so we can't really do anything about it. But you did it!
Just wanted to let you know I really appreciate the fix! :D

If you don't change them in the registry, the settings will reset themselves once you close (not minimise) the camera application or when you change the ambience from auto to night, etc.
The only permanent fix is to change them in the registry. Here's a link to a free registry editor: http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=31
PS: To all those that showed their appreciation: You're welcome :D :D

Maybe I missed something but I still do not find these attributes in the registry.........see my earlier post and screen shot.
kta, I agree that to get the change to stick its a registry change but in my registry I don't have these parameters. Is this because I have the older ExtROM ?

Grunt,
I'm not sure why you don't have these in your registry. I don't think it's the ROM version. I would try changing the settings in the camera settings and see if they get created. If that doesn't work I would try entering them manually as DWORD values base decimal (Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation, Sharpness).
Why aren't you upgrading to 1.11 anyway?

For some reason I also do not have these registry keys, but when I change the settings in the adjust panel, my settings are saved, even after a soft reset.

Koksie > Yes me too I didn't got this entries but there are saved (where in the registry ? don't know) even after a soft reset.
And my version ROM is old (1.03.02 FRE)

kta,
Made the changes just in the settings and they do in fact stick..... even after reset. Noticable improvement from the default...thks.
Re "Why aren't you upgrading to 1.11 anyway?"
I plan to....... but I have loaded heaps of stuff on the little guy and I use it a lot so have not yet found the time.....also hope to get pocketpctech RAM upgrade (not because I need it but because i can) so figure I will wait till after I get it back so i only have to reload all the apps again the one time.
Anyway.....

@ DocteurN: I am also on a really old ROM version, 1.01.00 WWE, looks like the first WWE ROM that was delivered to the Netherlands. Well, having old ROM seems to have one advantage: no need to hack the registry to save your settings, ha ha.

I can confirm that settings refresh after a soft reset on my ROM.
I changed the settings in the registry to take care of it permanently.
Thanks for the heads up ;)

Hi guys!
on my o2 mini this setting seems to work better:
contrast: 3
Brightness: 5
Hue: 5
Saturatuin: 4
Sharpness: 3
I use it "after installing jam camera patch on Rom 1.06 cht."

I keep doing these settings and it resets itself after a restart. I'm doing this in the registry, but still it's not permanent.

My registry modificacion also didnt stick. the solution is (if you have resco explorer and registry)
-do the registry changes
-export the keys to a regfile (it is only 1k)
-cut and paste it to the "\windows\startup" folder. it will then be imported every restart.

I'll give that a go, thanks a bunch. The solution really does help out a lot with the poor camera quality... I don't understand why i-Mate doesn't just do it themselves.

The tweak is great but as others mentioned it does not stick after a reset. I have tried it many times. I think Ill-tempered is right in the sense that if you look at the registry keys, there are duplicate entries with the "_User" appended. These _User keys do not change after a reset. The question is if the camera app takes its default values or the user values.

Hi, thanks for the trip the camera is much better ( not to compare to others like Nokia) and I just set it in the setup and even I close the camera next time it's still there, I am using a Mini HK version so I guess it's alright.....

It works great, but everytime I restart, my registry editor program open up. Does it do it on yours? I used PHM RegEdit... can you post your regfile here?

If your settings are resetting themselves after a soft reset, try deleting the _user keys. If you have user settings, these will over ride the default settings.

Confirmed, I use old 1.01.00 ROM (Damn you Dutch T-Mobile LAZY engineer :P :P).
I can set it via Camera->Settings->Adjust.
I did soft reset, and the settings are still there ! Amazing OLD ROM ! *sigh*

Hi guys !
I'm trying this trick in my Qtek 2020i and when I make a softreset the settings(User_) don't change.
But If switch from auto to night ambience the user_settings return to default.
What can I do ?
I must remove the User_settings from registry or other ?
Thanks in advance.

anycase I think it's all about the sharpness setting. lowering to 6 or 5 remove near completely snow effect in pictures shooted in low brightness.
And almost as important is lowering the Saturation. This causes the colored noise in pictures. Set it to 4 when you have sufficient lighting, 3 with average and 2 with very low lighting. Also when it's darker set the Brightness to 6 or even 7. I have the Sharpness always set to 3, 2 or even 1 sometimes. It doesn't make much difference in the actual picture, but does remove all the noise. And with 30 seconds of editing (auto levels and resize), the pics come out pretty decent for this crappy ass camera. :)

You don't actually have to edit your registry (if you do want to, it's HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE » SOFTWARE » HTC » Camera » AppDefSettings » General) Just open the camera app and go to Settings » Tools » Adjust. Everytime you change the Ambiance, the Adjust settings will be reseted to the original values.
I've tested some settings and compared the pictures with my Canon camera and I found that when you have sufficient to average light, the best pictures, with the most realistic colors, come with:
- Ambiance: Auto
- Contrast: 4
- Brightness: 4 (so that photo's aren't too bright)
- Saturation: 4 (gives the best colors, 5 makes it too colored and 3 to grey)
- Hue: 5
- Sharpness: 6 (the higher the Sharpness, the bigger the chance of noise. 6 or 7 still produces sharp pictures, but without noise)
When there's less light:
- Ambiance: Night
- Contrast: 4
- Brigtness: 6 (or 7)
- Saturation: 3
- Hue: 5
- Sharpness: 5 (or lower)
Also, using a timer helps making sharper pictures (cause the device is completely still when the picture is taken).

Hey guys, i was planning to make an application to make profiles out of these settings but i have a problem. Where can i change the registry so it immediately take effect? because when i change the registry ie contrast together with contrast_user to the same value, i had to do a soft boot or go to the camera settings and click "reset" button :? anyone know how to make the effect immediate? thanks...

The registry tweak will not be deleted after soft reset with the old ROM BUT.... not in the new ROM (1.11)
I wish i have not made any upgrade.
Nevertheless, has anyone tweak this new problem?

I applied the registry settings and although it does help with the snow, now the colour is wrong, blues are green and reds are a strange pink, all in all the pictures look a wierd range of colours.
Has anybody else experienced this? Or is this the compromise, if so I will go back to default sttings, as at least the colours were correct. :D
