XDA Setup for network development

Hi, ive recently purchased an XDAIIi and will shortly be writing applications using the .net framework.

i would like to know how to assign an IP address to the XDA so that while its in the cradle its "pingable" from my development machine (to which it is connected via USB)

i know this is possible because my previous job involved A LOT of mobile development using primarily - yes you guessed it - XDA's. unfortunately it was all set up for me when i arrived on my first day and had no reason to delve into how it worked.
