Hi,

I have recently purchased an unlocked Siemens SX56 and want to sign up with a carrier (Cingular - USA) that has its GSM network on 850 MHz frequency. Do you know if there will be problems with the coverage, signal, services, etc?

A sales rep., tried his SIM card on my device and it worked, but said there might be problems.

I would appreciate your opinion about this since I am holding off on signing up.

Thank you,

Ovi

Dont sign up on 850mhz if you intend using that phone.

It *really* depends on your area.
Cingular suggests that you have a phone that can at least have GSM 1900 and GSM 850. On occasion, I use my P800 and I have determined that while using 1900 works, in some areas you are hindered.

Examples:
Location no 850 850
Trip to last vegas full signal
Home Good Good
Work lousy signal OK
Driving to work OK Good

Unfortunately there are no maps that indicate which areas are 850, which 1900 and which both so it is hard to tell how well your service will work

Thanks for your reply!

I signed up with Cingular and it works OK, not better or worse than the previous account with AT&T.
