Try run it on 470Mhz with original memory clk.

I'm not getting tired to mention that your battery drain increases dramatically with PHM, even when underclocking! This is due to the non existing voltage control of the processor when using PHM.
I prefer longer use over some more speed when playing games - but that's to everyone himself. Normal applications don't benefit a bit from the faster CPU!
some0NE
4th July 2005, 04:23 PM
you can choose which applications should use 520MHz :)
other ones will have only 416MHz
Dandie
4th July 2005, 04:31 PM
PHM even supports scaling, meaning that it uses a slower clock than normal when not busy and a higher clock when busy. Still, with pure underclocking or using this scaling, your battery drain will significantly be higher than without using PHM. As i said, this is due the non existing capability of PHM to dynamically regulate the voltage of the CPU. If the clock is not set by a software, the CPU automatically reduces the voltage when not in use. This reduces the battery drain significantly (for me, this meant about one day longer usage of my magician).
That is the reason why I don't recommend using PHM, even though everyone can do what he wants. Maybe other softwares are capable of doing this but i doubt it!

Just for reference:
PHM 520 MHz does not work on Chinese 1.11 ROM, but works fine on English 1.11/1.12 ROMs.
Using the benchmark function of PocketTV Pro 0.15.9, video playback speed increases from 51 fps to 65 fps (416MHz vs 520 MHz).

I'm also using 1.11 CHT rom and PHM 3.13. I only run PHM when I run GBA and SNES emulators, and it works fine so far. I also found 618MHz to be the best performing overclocked speed for the Magician.

I've tried using PHM on my mini. I ran my mini at 468mhz (bus:117, mem:59, LCD: 59), and there's a noticable difference from the default speed. The difference is particularly noticable in the refresh rate of my today screen. The downside is that there is more battery drain.
I did try 520mhz on my mini as well, and it ran quite fast for about 6 hours, then it did a hard reset. I had no such problems at 468mhz.
Dandie is right about the battery drain even when underclocked. I ran my mini at 260mhz to see if battery life would improve, but the battery still drained faster than at 416mhz.

Mine works without a problem on 520MHz. Dandie - are you sure, that underclocking and scalling drain the batteries faster? As in PHM manual there's written:
"Unfortunately CPU frequency and/or voltage scaling was not and still isn’t a part of the
standard Windows CE distributions. There are some OEMs that add something that looks
like “scaling” but it is very simple and usually limited to a choice of only two speed
setting and the end user does not have much control over it."
Overall - the message is that using PHM we can have a better battery life. Is there any tool that will allow me to check it in real life usage? Any battery meter showing graphs, like PsiBATT for PSION (http://www.tatbak.de/Psion.html)?

I've checked with PHM using manual setting@ 618/124/62/62, you should get:
L: 19
N:5
A:1
Turbo: checked

Hey, short question: If I install PHM and run it I can overclock and have shorter battery lifetime. If I exit it and disable PHM, does the included SpeedStep take over with voltage control? I'm asking because normally I dont use PHM (and enjoy longer battery lifetime) but I'd like to have it on my device if I need a little more juice.
By the way: Could you post the SI you're getting at your speeds so I know how mine compares.

There is no such option, the default settings are one of the many in that list. You'll find 416 with bus 104 in the list, that is basically the default. Test that speed and you can set this having sort of a default setting.

22nd September 2005, 04:48 PM
The latest one, 3.15.00 because older ones tend to have instability issues with PXA 272. But at least it works (in contrast to XCPUScalar that is all fake) even if I get a soft reset at the 520 setting. But using 468 is rock solid and delivers a nice boost. I'd like to see some more bus setings though, 125 would be nice since 130 is a little shaky.
Does that 618 setting really work??? I wonder since mine soft resets at 520. At least it did yesterday when I tested it once.
And how do you get 520 using 104 as bus???
Forgive me, I'n new to PHM and want to avoid a hardreset. That 618 works because it uses a lower bus speed than the 520 (which uses 130)? So using 117 I could get 585 (117 to be on the safe side) , has onybody tested that?
And is there a manual around describing what L, N and so on means? From the PC I'm used to bus and multiplicator. I guess N is the mutliplicator? Isn't that fixed to 4 with the one in the magician? I thought you can only overlock via the bus setting.

I'll tell you what... Just tried today the 618 settings -- works, I mean, it f..cking flies! But... after 2 hours playing with it - a hardreset after I tried to use the Exit command in PHM. Your decision to make, bro. Good thing I backed up ;)

Well I wont prolly use it 2h in a row. And I wouldn use 600+ either but 585 (using 117*5) sounds pretty nice to me. The 130 bus is simply too much, mine failed the test with a softreset. But using 117 as bus it ran stable with 468 for hours. So if the multiplicator can be set you can use 117*5 making 585 instead 117*4 making 468. The CPU can take it, the mem and the bus is the problem.
Or use 104*5 resuting in 520, no overclocking the bus or mem, just the CPU. That should be no problem at all.

Just came across the L settings. L=20 is used for bus of 130, L=16 is used for standard bus of 104. L=19 means 124 and L=18 means 117. But what does L=17 mean? Anyone tested this succesfully on their magician?
By the way, why does L=16, N=5, A=1 with turbo result in a LCD-speed of 104??? The standard 416 come with lcd set to 52 (should be that way) but how can I set that manually??? L=17 will set the lcd equal to bus slighty below 60 but L=16 doubles the LCD and there is now way to get 52 as lcd. How does PHM achieve the standard 416 then???
Please help.
And could you PLEASE post some SI values you get for me to compare mine with.

Bus=130MHz is too much for my S110 too, it locks up and need a soft reset. BUT with a bus=124MHz you can reach 620MHz stable I was told (124*5) which is the fastest working setting for a magician.
How do you get 556MHz anyway? I mean you could get it with 124MHz bus and a multiplicator pf 4.5 but I have never heard of such one. I've only seen ones of 4 and 5 in PHM myself makeing 496MHz and 620MHz with a 124MHz bus. So how do you get that 4.5 one???
Prolly the best speed is 117*5=585, rock solid and stable over weeks and very fast. Pushing the bus to high will lock it up (as happened with 130 and 124 is not that far away from that). I mean 124 is nearly a 20% overclock on the bus, that is pretty hefty and something that would crash nearly any PC leave alone PPCs. The 12.5% overclock of 117MHz bus sounds very good to me.

This is what Immiersoft (XCPUScalar makers) says about the fake overclock:
"Because of the builtin speed stepping functionality that is built into these family of PDA's when XCPUScalar is set to 520MHz, the builtin speed utility usually resets it back to 416MHz when its on battery power. Unfortunately there is no interface to disable this that the manufacturer provides. So to get true 520MHz overclocking for these family of PDA's with XCPUScalar please attach AC power to your PDA and you will get true 520MHZ overclocking."
What's the 'built in speed stepping functionality' they're talking about???
Is it possible they're referring to the built in voltage (and not frequency)auto scaling or do our magicians have a freq. autoscaling feature we didn't know about???
Bye bye,
