Has anyone tried this?

Does it work.

I have replaced my fried XDA II with an XDA IIs - and it would be convenient not to have to reload everything again.

well not sure which backup you mean if you mean activesync or xbackup or spritebackup

i know for a fact that activesync dont even restore if you upgraded your device to a newer rom so much less if you change the device for another

the problem is that the db formats for mails and the likes can be changed from rom to rom and from device to device also it also backup and restore the registry which can also differ in struc from rom to rom and device to device

upgrading as in going from another version of the os ?
like from 2002 to 2003
or 2003 to 2003SE
or to 2005 ?

Well, you could just try it ;)

It's my understanding though that it will replace the registry, which from OS to OS on the same device isn't a biggie, but you would lose all the registry settings for the built in keyboard, and wifi on the 2s for starters, there would probably be more problems as the hardware is so different.

So personally, I wouldn't bother. Also you would be overwriting WM2003se files in ROM with WM2003 files in RAM, so you would probably have a few problems there (this is unless you were running 2003se on your 2).
