Hi There
Ive tried searching high and low for this type of feature and I cannot find anything. Let me explain.. :)
What I want to do is on my Pocket PC with a GPS unit, is basically have a program running that grabs the Long/Lat data from the GPS at a specified time interval (say every 60 mins) and uploads that to a website or FTP via GPRS.
What I plan to do on the website side of things is to have the website read from that data and load Google Maps to show where the person is!
Anyone already know a program to do this kind of thing?
Thanks in advance
Gary

Try www.pocketpccreations.com
I have used it to get the location of an operator when tacking data. I have not tried to run a timer it get the data when a user clicks the button. You have to add the gps custom point.
Let me know if you need any further info.

Heh, thats exactly the sort of thing but with Pocket PC. I wanted to get the POS to a website, then use the API of Google maps to show the position.

Yea, Im not really wanting to run a program like that to do it, basically I just want something sitting in the background dropping the GPS point every x mins or x hrs type thing to a website/ftp.

We use this for our workers on the road. They send back positions every 10 seconds via their XDA & we track them on maps in the office.
However, it's part of a larger 2-way data app.

Well I've had no code from people who said they'd send some for me to look at, so I have written one myself - a learning curve as I'm not too proficient in VB.net.
Anyway,
Within a couple of days I'll have a program to run on WM2003SE that will automatically check all com ports for a GPS device and read it.
It displays Date Time/Lat/Long.
It will send this info to an ASP page that will log the user id, Time Date and Lat / Long (at a user specified interval). It doesn't send too much data to the site (approx 50 bytes) as traffic volume is what most of us are charged on.
The positions will be stoired in a database on the web site.
there will also be an ASP page for the user to log in to (user id that is used in the program and a password) so that they can see their logs.
The resulting pages will have shortcuts to whatever in-line mapping sites that I can find and use (Suggestions here would be useful :D )
I'll be using it anyway - so the rest of you may as well take advantage of that... or shoudl I say - my Wife will be using it !!
IF anyone would like to test it please let e know (Pls PM me as well as replying)
It is a few days off at the moment, but should be ready by this weekend - time and life permitting :D
Once I have screenshots, I will post links to them - or put them here!
That's IF anyone is interested  Let me know if you are.
Also, pls let me know what devices you have and what OS... as I'll try to test it on all the OS's available to me (real and emulation).

what about that cellID tracking program that tracks your positions via cell towers, there is something like that for the C500, and I think there was something like it for the XDA, although is still buggy as hell.
I have seen in the Phonealarm program an option where it shows you the cellID and you can change profiles depending on location, and thei MY|BLOG program, that does exactly that, so it IS possible.

Cellid is useful but it isnt very precise for tracking unfortunately.
Yorch
4th August 2005, 09:49 PM
Oh, I see, but It will be cool still, if this program would use those two technologies, to try to track yourself. i.e. when you don't have your GPS running, it uses this CellID to track you.

I've managed to get a little program together and it now uploads the position and your "userid" to a server via GPRS (or whatever internet connection the PPC has) , and the server stores it.
I now need help to find any web pages that will display maps given parameters of the locationm that way I can code my "retrieval" page to automatically display the page.. if more than 1 location can be displayed then it would be ideal as it could show progress....
I have tried multimap (UK), but that's not too hot as it doesn't show the exact location, just shows the area around the selected co-ordinates.

Cool :D - at least someone cares!
Google Maps it will be - if I can get it working as I'd like then it's gonna look great! - if not - bummer!
I'm hopefully going to be logging my 60 mle journey from work - home (every minute) tonight and will then get the web pages sorted so that it will display my route and progress.
I've also just got a beta copy of Visual Studio 2005 and may re-write my app as the GPS/Comm DLL's I found on the net don't seem too stable in my implementation).
I will post updates as they come...
EDITED:-
I now have google maps working on a sample set of data, check out this link to show the last 10 minutes of my journey home (after having removed the last few entries!)
www.grillo.biz/position/Show.asp
I think it will oly show 10 pushpins.
Please let me know what you think.
Future pages will have an option to show positions for a given date/time and up to 10 previous locations to that, along with an input for the users details.
As for how much data it pushed over GPRS, on 26 updates, it used about 52K (that's what the GPRS monitor tells me anyway)
BUT Visual Studio 2005 has knackered my PC so a complete rebuild may be necessary - and it won't be quick !

Ok, I now have a stable application and web site to get this up and running.
I decided to re-write it on a different language completely.
The web pages are still in ASP against an Access database.
For info, it updates the web in realtime, so your position can be seen immediately (at user chosen refresh intervals).
I work in London and if thers's an "incident" and I don't know about it, then my wife can see if I'm "safe".... plus I do a lot of driving and she can easily see if I'm stuck in traffic - so will be late home for tea!
The app will be available via a link on http://www.grillo.biz/position/ later this week.
There will be one CAB for the run time and one for the application.
I have to manually set users up in the database before positions will be stored. This way I can ensure people use unique names.
That link is also the one to see where you've been.
Please look at the page above as it does include some samples.
If you like it and have ideas for change, I am open to suggestions.
If you have any questions, PM me, post on here or email me gps@grillo.co.uk

The data upload per "send" is very little indeed.
The length of the url it posts to (with all the position data) is about 50 bytes and very little is sent back from the asp page
(after all I dont want to waste my own monthly allocation of 1/2 Mb !- and it was initially concieved as something for myself to use regularly)
I now use it on the train on the way home, and my wife checks the progress to see if there are any delays... as there regularly are!
I'll monitor my usage over a number of uploads and report back the usage.

I have had a hell of a lot of work here.
This is a 30 day test of my program
you can look at all the screens and play with it as much as you like
but it will not upload to any website as i dont have that side of the system working yet.
The position is sent by SMS at the moment back to my PC at Work (this will not work unless you ask me for the password to unlock the system)
Have a look at it and let me know what you think.

OK, i could really do with some pointing in the right direction.
I'm building a similar app, and i'm pretty new to application programming. I've got the PDA side of the application going, it displays your positiong and total distance travelled etc.
I now want to upload the Longitude and Latitude to a webserver/MySQL database which i'll then link in with google maps.
Unfortunately i'm not sure where to start on the programming for making the connection with my webserver, do i need to use the connectionManager Api? Or is there another way?
Any help would be very much appretiated!

There is a free client/server package for personal use using Google Earth and Google maps. The dev still offers trial accounts on the test server too, if you want to try it.

Tnx, Ox.
Nice tracking solution for the PDA. Looks like the free version is a way to drum up business for the commercial version. The only difference I can see is that the commercial version uses MapPoint 2004. Are you the developer? Does it run on winXP pro IIS , or do you need Windows server 2003?
oxcarz
14th April 2006, 08:48 PM
Yes, I am the dev. WIth the commercial version you get route maps, address lookups, and all the data is archived in .csv format for use in Excel. It's also very fast because the maps come from your own server.
FOr personal use, I would stick to the free version. Google Earth is really amazing and probably all you need.
