I don't think I will bother !
The update instructions are a NIGHTMARE ! - including 2 full hard resets and all your date , progs settings etc being lost .

It took me hours on the phone to BT to get my internet settings working on my Pay As You Go sim card.

It all works like a dream now .

Is there a good reason for updating ??

Yup still no blackbery support

But we finally get o2 music player

And it does seem more stable

The radio version was only 1.0 so i kept on my imate radio rom 1.03

Works well so far tho.

If that is the only thing then there is no point in upgrading.

Music is more or less free for download on the internet anyway.

Anyone tried it yet?

It claims "General Operational updates, improving device stability and connectivity management. "

So does this include the GPRS thing?

Had a look, the imate rom seems to be better. OS is radio 1.0.0, imate is 1.0.3

Did anyone also notice that all mention of Blackberry Connect has been removed from the XDA IIi specs page...

I emailed them yesterday about the lack of blackberry on their website and recieved this reply :
Good morning

Thank you for your e-mail

At this moment in time the software for Blackberry connect is being developed, and hopefully will soon be released. Unfortunately we cannot give you an exact timescale for this, but details will be posted on our XDA website www.my-xda.com when available.

A change request form has been put in to remove the dates from the website

If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us, we will be more than glad to help.

Kind regards

Zincubus:
- Upgrading rom's will ALWAYS nuke your settings - it's a damn reflash of the device to factory status, and has been since 2002
- Pay and Go has never been formally supported by O2 on Xda series

In all honesty, my phone feels about the same.

I've done a corporate install so I've not allowed o2 the chance to rip me off with overpriced mp3s, i can't see any difference. Although battery life seems to be worse now, can anyone else confirm or deny that?

Mikee4fun
2nd August 2005, 05:05 PM
Well I can say my battery life is the same. I do not see a difference. Also it seems a little bit faster but I will need to run some benchmarks first. For some odd reason it seems that the screen is brighter so perhaps there is a new video driver which gives it brighter gamma. For your battery life suckin I suggest you look at your startup items and test by removing some.

The proggies I have are microsoft voice command 1.5, sbsh pocket weather v 1.00.14 build 804 , spb pocket plus v3 build 3888, agile messenger v. AM-PPC2003-19, Pocket Map Navigator v R3.12.204, Wisbar Advanced 2 v 2.4.0.1 and I run bluetooth 3900 stack 24/7.

I also don't run any of the O2 garbage! There are a couple of ways to not install it but how I choose is to do a soft reset on a hard reboot as soon as you see the o2 active personal corporate screen come up.

Must admit that I have modified the ROM so it uses the i-mate 1.03 radio. No problems with it at all. Used Tomtom 5 for 3 hours today with no problems at all, traffic over gprs seemed to work no problems. The battery life doesn't seem to be affected at all on my 2i, must be the different radio stack, maybe 1.03 is more efficient. I'll try upload it to the FTP site if anyone is interested in my modified version.

Quick question to anybody, if I upgrade the ROM and don't get on with this update how would I revert back to a previous version. Please excuse my ignorance but I am a new XDA user and only had my XDA for a month although I've been working in IT for 18yrs!

To revert back to a previous ROM, just run the installer package that you may have. O2 gave you a CD with the firmware on when you bought the 2i which I think has the original firmware on it. There are also many ROMs on this site you can use. I'm not sure if a backup and restore through Activesync will work but no doubt there will be other people with more know how to answer this one.

7th August 2005, 12:47 PM
To be honest not sure what the problem could be as I'm very new to all this pocket PC stuff. The only things I can think of are as follows:

1: The files got corrupted during download.
2: The installer program fails the first time you run it and all you need to do is run it a second time without touching your 2i at all.
3: Just let all the components update.
4: It's not a 2i you are trying to update. (extremely unlikely though)

Don't take offence at that last one though, it does happen. I tried to put WM5 on my 2i for 5 days before I realised it was ONLY for the 2.......DOH!

I really don't know how yo uhave done it. I ran the MAUpdate.exe file an dit checked my device for the version numbers etc. then it failed in the bootloader mode. I then re ran the exe file again not touching the the XDA2i and it started to update the ROM. When it got to the Radio Update part it said Error - Radio Version incorrect please reset your devic and try again.

It is an XDA2i, its worth asking though!

There was an update for TT3 on their website that was intended to sort out the lockup of TT3 during and after calls. I am uploading the modified and first original O2 ROMs to the following folder for those interested in both of these.

ftp://xdaupload:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/O2%20Alpine%20Roms/

My ROM version of Dopod 699 (antoher name of HTC Alpine) in Taiwan.
Just for your information. :)

ROM version: 1.11.06CHT (CHT for Chinese Traditional)
ROM date: 01/27/05
Radio: 1.02.00
Protocol: 1337.41
ExtROM: 1.11.110 CHT

It looks Dopod Taiwan already carried the newest ROM when I've bought my Dopod 699 this March. :D (And Dopod has no any ROM update for now)

We have newer Radio (1.03.00) now. I am considering to upgrade Radio, however don't know how much improvment between 1.02 and 1.03, since it looks like no Alpine WWE users have Radio 1.02...

and have driven 60 miles with TOMTOM 5 and no problems, I used the traffic all the time and I made one call and recieved 2. in my eyes that 100% better.

Bad point is it has already crashed once but alot less than normal, dont know if its me but the screen does not go to the edge any more but it dont botter me if it works.

camera looks better may not be I dont use it very often.all in all a bit faster and more stable. :)

Has anyone noticed if the Radio: 1.03.00 improves the actual signal quality?. I currently use...

O2 XDA 2i
ROM VERSION: 1.10.00 WWE
RADIO VERSION: 1.00.00
PROTOCOL VERSION: 1337.39
EXTROM VERSION: 1.10.124

Using the above I don’t know if anyone else has experience unstable signal ie.. from Max strength down to 0 then back up ?!?.

Got it sorted.

Used WinRAR to extract the files from the o2 XDA_IIi_Upgrade_v1.11.162 file to a folder on my PC , then put a copy of MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe from pug,s XDA_IIi_Upgrade_v1.11.162 Radio_1.3.rar into my new folder. Ran MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe first time, and it changed all but the Radio (came up with an error for Radio). Ran it a second time, all back to the new o2 Upgrade v1.11.162

ActiveSync still wouldn't restore my contacts, but I had previously backed them up to a SD, so using xBackup was able to restore contacts. (from file called CompactFlashBackUpPim) :D

Hope this might help someone

Still haven't sorted the Country ID error No-No-22-22-22 using the original o2 files though

10th August 2005, 01:17 PM
Activesync uses the device name to arrange the files that are synchronised. If the device name is wrong then the files won't be restored to the device at all. Before all updates are done it is common practice to perform backups of essential data.

Zincubus, this is how you do it:

1: Go to START>PROGRAMS>XBACKUP and backup contacts and appointments to the storage card.
2: Copy all files you want to keep to your storage card. Then remove the card.
3: Download and unrar the update file.
4: Run MAUpgradeUT_noid.exe - It will report an error and stop.
5: Run the program again without touching the Alpine at all.
6: Use Xbackup to restore your contacts etc and copy all files back to your device from your storage card.
7: Set your phone up back as you like it. All programs will need reinstalling etc.

If you are wanting to install an original O2 update then all you have to do is connect your device and run the original update program, no unzipping or anything.

MAUpgradeUT_noid.exe or MAUpgradeUT.exe?

Why would I have a blank next to EXTROM version ??

pug
11th August 2005, 01:28 PM
The only reason there would be a blank is that an incomplete ROM was installed at some point.

Looking at it you would probably benefit from installing one of the updates, wether it's one of the genuine O2 ROMs, the I-mate ROM or the one I posted. If you follow the instructions a few posts ago it is really simple and there's no need for errors to occur on your behalf.

If the device works you may not want to do this at all. Your call.

Hi all,

Upgraded my lli as soon as the ROM was available.. So far I've had it lock up twice on the same day, went to power it on and the screen was already active but on BL, had to soft reset on both occasions.. Also had no bluetooth audio when making a call (just buzz & crackle) strange as I had normal PPC audio through the BT head set, just no audio during a call..Had to hard reset to clear that issue..Also went to turn it on yesterday and it went straight into camera mode and started taking pictures one after another!! had to soft reset to stop it!!! Oh and it has managed to turn the BL setting to zero by its self on two other occasions!!!

Hope someone from O2 reads these forums.. I've never owned such a poorly sorted piece of hardware in my life.. Barely a day goes by when it dosent need a soft reset to sort some issue.. And I'm running it "as is" out of the box ..

I have tried updating the ROM to imate..........locks up my Xda11i
I have updated Tomtom to 5.10....................still locks up
If i turn my phone off..............................works ok with tomtom-no phone

Replaced my pqi 1gb (high speed 45) sd card with a Transcend 512mb (80x)sd card reloaded tomtom 5 onto card,
WORKS PERFECTLY no longer locks up when making/receiving calls

YIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! :D :D

unfortunately now i may have to apologize to tomtom and O2 for spitting rusty nails at them for rubbish products when ,for me ,it was the sd card all along that was the problem

Whilst I agree that the SD card was most likely the problem, why should this happen just with TTN? The answer is simple, badly written software!

80x cards have only just become available and are still not common.

I ask as it would be loaded on our company xda2i's
We have 250 xda2’s & 100 xda2i’s …. All on contract with O2.

Both types use similar xBackup images and a TwinMos 512MB Ultra-X SD card, full of company info. The xda2’s are ok , the xda2i’s are a pain… normal freezing, apps not always loading etc... all freezing seem to disappear when SD cards are removed !
We also use GPRS that’s active all day long.

I suppose I should try a small number on 1.11.162 & R1.03 firmware and then approach O2 with the results.. You never know, if it fixes our freezing issues they may even release an official upgrade.

The other reason I ask is that if I were to approach O2 I wouldn't want to drop you lot in the Sh~t wrt copyright.

Any suggestions ??

I have just downloaded the new software, including the new radio version. Before I updated I ran the XBackup and after I had finished the update I did the required hard reset. I then ran the restore function from XBackup, which claims to restore all data. Have I still got the improved software?

Hi all

Interesting info in this thread.

I have an O2 XDA IIi with the following device info:

ROM version: 1.10.00 WWE
ROM date: 12/24/04
Radio version: 1.00.00
Protocol version: 1337.39
ExtRom version: 1.10.124 WWE

I have the annoing gprs bug where it connects ok 1st time and then if i get a phone call or disconnect it wont connect again. I have to turn flight mode on and then off to get it to work...so annoying!

Also it has the bluetooth bug where some time when i use TT5 it doesnt initialise so i have to reboot the XDA so BT starts to work again...

...and lastly the little icon that flips the screen (bottom right of today screen) has a mind of its own and sometimes appears after a reboot.

I hope Pug's rom will resolve this. I looks like it has worked ok for most of you but i havent made the leap in case i open up a can of worms that will take days and days to fix.

has any one backed up using sprite backup before updating? did you manage to restore everything back to normal after the update so you didnt have to re install all your software/settings?

Any info on this will be greatly appriciated!

Hi all,

I have a Qtek 2020i and I downloaded the modified XDA IIi rom using the link in this thread. I followed the instructions above exactly and ran the MAUpgradeUT_noid.exe program. I keep getting the same error no matter how many times I run the upgrade program. The error I get is:

ERROR 150: ROM UPGRADE UTILITY ERROR

This ROM Upgrade Utility does not design for your device. Please get proper ROM Upgrade Utility and try again.

Is this the error everyone is saying you get once and run it again and the upgrade works? I tried running the upgrade again and it does not work. Fortunatley apart from initially connecting to the device it does not write anything so my device is working but is on the old rom. How do I upgrade a QTEC 2020i with this ROM?

TIA

OK scratch the issue below. I performed a rom backup to sd before doing this upgrade and to do that I had to close ativesync. It would appear that was the problem. After restarting activesync and trying again it came up with a different error and next time I ran the program it started the upgrade. Fingers crossed it should go smoothly :D

Dont get too excited - I had this ROM on a pre-release, and I can catogorically state that it does not solve the GPRS freezing problem (which incidentlally O2 does not believe is a problem as their help desks are not inundated with calls).

In fact I am struggling (between reboots) to fathom what the benefit is. They have told me they suspect a problem with the phone and a newer ROM is on its way, but I'm not holding my breath.

I also own a HP 6510 - superb - never needs a reboot. How have O2 got it so wrong I wonder?

I just upgraded my rom to run blackberry coz o2 told me they'd add the blackberry.net apn for free on my existing tariff to be told on the 3rd attempt to get it added that it'd cost me an extra £15!!..

the problem I have is this..

I always had the gprs problem but wasn't too fussed as everything else (especially tomtom3) worked like a dream.

I was daft enough not to have written down the exact version of the rom I used to have but now I am running extended rom version 1.11.169 WWE, same basic rom 1.11.00, don't know if the radio version has changed but don't think so. Tomtom randomly stops picking up the gps position!! I have to either restart tomtom, untick the port and turn it back on again or restart the xda2i !! It's a nightmare !

I think I had ext rom version 1.11.128 before but it may be any 1.11.12? from memory - my memory isn't that good that's why I'm gutted I never wrote it down.

I currently have radio version 1.00 and originally thought it was that because it seemed to stop tomtom every time I changed cell site in transit or took a call with it running. So I tried flight mode and the same thing happened.

If anyone can help me with either the old rom (g0dz1lar has v1.11.124) or an idea to update radio alone to resolve the tomtom prob, I'd me most grateful as I dont want bb so am happy to revert to my prev rom.

oh and I use a 512mb card which I've had no problems with on any version of xda.

cheers

The file "rofs_target.zip" was not copied sucesfully. To re-install, you will need to get the source .cab file again. Continue with Setup?

Anyone have the answer ??

My settings are now :-

rom version 1.11.00wwe
rom date 01/27/05
radio version 1.03.00
protocol version 1337.42
extrom version [BLANK]

I also got the same error when downloading the latest rom from O2 this week, which is why I thought I would try Pugs version.
