Broken Bluetooth

ok, to cut a long story short, i cannot find people when i search on bluetooth, i was sitting next to my friend in the pub and i couldnt pick their phone up, and they searched and found me, there phon was on discoverable and i have tried this with many of my friends? any idea on how to fix it with out dataloss or a hard reset?

p.s i can still use my bluetooth gps on it and people can send me stuff, i just cannot find them when i search
