Does anyone know anything about this "type a name or number" plugin
http://www.howardchui.com/images/scottnews/previews/treo700w/screenshot-3.JPG
Has anyone managed to get a rom rip off this thing yet, or the .dlls? I'd be interested to know how it works in practise.

Oh, please don't tease me with Treo's BATTERY METER!!! I want it on my Wizard! Does anyone know about something in that style? (please, don't tell me "use AKU2's default", guys...).
BTW.... question to Mr Vijay. I saw a pretty nice one on the screenshots on your website - (let me check...) - at VJCandela and VJBigPhone screenshots. What is that battery meter?
TIA, Alex

aperley: my battery meter screenshots are probably from the excellent SmallMenu Plus.
I posted the treo's battery meter years ago.
Here you go, with a screenshot showing it working fine on my Hermes.

Hi ViJay,
that seems to be the same thing posted long time ago in one of the Treo ripping threads. I've tried it that time, and it didn't work on my Wizard. The issues are following:
- it COMPLETELY overrides the volume control - not just the icon, but the slider as well. Moving the volume slider up or down causes the battery status notif to pop up. So, no way to control the volume anymore.
- it only shows battery charge at the moment of launch, and it doesn't change. I've launched it at 95%, now I have 90%, but the thing is still showing me 95%.
- after pluging the charger in, it changes the icon to "charging", but never changes it back.
Maybe I did something wrong? I've just unpacked the archive in a folder and launched the .exe.
And - question. What are those .bmp's for? Definitely not for Treo battery meter - they rather look like GS Battery meter (which doesn't work on WM5). And - I'm gonna try Small Menu:)
Thanks!

I don't know what the stuff is for, I just ripped out everything that said battery. As you said, it's not worth using, as it covers the volume icon. The one in the TyTN threads is much better anyway!

the 700w has the same feature and u can find an actually dump.bin that contains everything and registry which is available here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=261622). Just lettting yall know. ;) maybe this helps.

That's where it came from. We dumped the Treo some time back... but thanks anyway!
Is anyone interested in this battery thing? I don't think it works properly on our phones, and there are better alternatives.

I've tried SmallMenu... That's exactly what I was loking for! Great thanks! I didn't really like the menu feature itself, but the battery meter is cool! Actually, I prefer the Treo battery icon style, so I made my own icon set - based on Treo screenshots. Hopefully, they are not copyrighted 8) First icon is not done - can't figure out what is it for. Check this out:
P.S. just Photoshopped it real quick... The lightning symbols on charging icons are messed up - will fix that later.

There are a few goodies that the 750v has over the 700. One being the much desired threaded sms app, and also the much improved bluetooth stack that supports a2dp and voice dialing.

Just wondering if anyone had figured out a way to add that to an HTC device ? Not sure it's a standard plugin though as it gets activated/deactivated in the menu/preferences/Hide Lookup Field

I managed to get this to work on Faria's latest AKU 3.2 ROM which I installed today. I was playing with the registry and simply copied a key and changed a dll mapping, soft reset and presto!
The key that was copied was from the WebSearchPlugin found in this forum:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\"Web Search"]
"Order"=dword:0000002A
"Flags"=dword:00000000
"Enabled"=dword:00000001
"Options"=dword:00000000
"Selectability"=dword:00000002
"Type"=dword:00000004
"DLL"="\\Windows\\WebSearchPlugin.dll"
I recreated the key changing the following lines only:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\"Dial Lookup"]
"DLL"="\\Windows\\DialLookupPlugin.dll"
Attached are a screenshot and a zip zrchive containing the registry settings that can be imported using your favorite registry editor.
NOTE: 1) that you must use your sliding keyboard..duh. and 2) the icons above and to the right of the input box.
Forgot to mention that this was done on my Wizard.

That's quite a big step!
Just imported the plugin on the Faria RC1 ROM. After the import I soft reset my device. First time I recieved an Shell error, by pressing "Ok", my Wizard restarted. Now it works fine :)
The wireless plugin showing the BT and Wireless doensn't work: "Error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename".
I think the plugin is quite useless for Wizard users. Now you have to slide open your keyboard to search and dial a contact. When dialing you have to close the device again.
Like the Wireless part though :D
Recieved the same message for the second time: "An unhandled error has occured in the shell. Attempting to restart the shell.".
Will restore a backup and let this plugin be for the moment ;)

Strange, and I'm assuming you made sure its checked under Start>Settings>Today>Items ?
Oh and the plugin/dll is dependent on the following dll's listed below. You can find them on Faria's latest AKU3.2 Roms.
diallookupplugin.dll
-palmutils.dll
-rediallistdb.dll
-speeddialdb.dll
-speeddialplugin.dll

This is fantastic! You do not know how long I've been waiting for this to happen. I'm assuming that removing the nonfunctioning aspects of the plugin is not possible? I know that while others are keen on having everything working, I'd be happy just with the contacts bit. So if there's a way for me to manually remove the carrier and the wireless fields entirely - please let me know.
Thanks again.

I use a hw6965 and have been trying to remove the actual plugin on the today screen while maintaining the functionality. I have discovered a way to activate the options screen for the dial lookup today plugin which allows for the hiding of the text entry box on the today screen. Unfortunately I cannot get it to remove the non-functioning bits of the plugin, namely the wireless icons and the call status. And although this actually removes the functioning bits instead - it saves on screen space and I thought I'd share, in the hopes that it will shed some light on how this plugin works or can work and maybe someone can take the next steps and either getting it to work in its entirety or remove it from the today screen while keeping functionality.
after installing the plugin cab and related files you can enable the options screen in the settings/today screen for the plugin by editing the registry as below:
KKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Today\Items
In there you will see the various today plugins you have currently installed:
select "Dial Lookup"
change the values to:
Enabled =1
Flags = 0
Options = 2
Order = (leave this alone)
Selectability = 2
Type = 4
Save changes and exit
now the "options" is available in the today screen settings *However the options need to be activated in a very peculiar way:
START/SETTINGS/TODAY/(Items tab)
go to dial lookup and now you can select Options
The options will allow you to turn off the lookup text box but you will have to do the following for it to work. Tick the box for Hide look up text box (or whatever it says) then instead of hitting "ok" hit the start menu and select "today". This will take you to the today screen. go to START/SETTINGS/TODAY/ and now you will once again be back at the dial lookup options screen. Now hit "ok", but instead of hitting ok again to exit out of the settings screen hit START/TODAY. Now the options setting for the plugin is saved and the text entry box should no longer be displaying.
As a note I'm using a hw6965 so your mileage may vary but this has been the only way I got this working on my device.

So I was looking around to try to understand more about the related dlls that the treo plugin requires and I began to see similarities in the functionality of the netui.dll featured here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=259885&highlight=netui.dll
for the wireless today plugin display hack and the functionality of the treo wireless/carrier plugin display. Would it be possible, and I'm just throwing out conjecture here as I am neither skilled nor educated enough to check it myself, to modify the palmutils.dll with sections/portions from the netui.dll so that the treo plugin "reads" the correct information from the system and displays it accordingly? I'm hoping someone the likes of Vijay can figure it out.

I can try to look into it but could you clearly explain what the issues are with it? I've never used it and don't intend to, too much redundancy, i'd rather rewrite from scratch. Parse out a list of issues and if i get a chance I'll look into it... V

as it stands the treo contacts search plugin consists of two lines the text box entry line and the wireless/carrier line. the text entry part works fine but the wireless/carrier aspect of the plugin is quite useless. So I was thinking that the netui.dll could be used to modify the palmutils.dll therby rendering the non-functioning aspect to function correctly.

Everything was in order and pretty straight forward. I don't remember it all but I think there was a little tinkering. Check your registry to see if it's all installed and make sure you have there's look back a couple of posts there's a posted cab file that should do the trick. You'll have to soft reset after installation.

Is somebody working on a fix to remove the unworking icons, or at least make them work with non-Treo devices?
Xilicon
20-12-2006, 10:12 AM
So here it is - I will be willing to pay for a developer to either fix the current plugin to work correctly or to modify it in such a way that the non-working components are no longer taking up screen space. I suggest we do a reverse silent bid, where those feel competent in their skills to develop such a plugin will PM me with a quotation for their services. Such quotations should remain a secret until a winner is selected. If there is interest we can develop this idea further specifying details. Since I am putting up the money the plugin should be to my requirements namely hw6965 pda/phone wm.5 with 240x240 screen. If within a week there are yet no takers, I will offer a reward - hopefully there will be others to join in.

I may be late but to those who don't need the non working icons(bluetooth and wireless) and the "false" status display. You can get these icon and "status" removed by using a dll editor such has ResHacker to edit the diallookup.dll file...
Unfortunately, I don't know how to reduce the plugin to one row...
Just replace the *.zip with *.dll

I have recently upgraded from a 8125 to an 8525. I used Sleuth's PPTFix.cab to enable the use of the PTT button on my 8525. I have then setup the button to display the popup keyboard from the today screen when pressed. This allows me to use the Dial Lookup feature without opening the sliding keyboard. (Those with large fingers may want to use large buttons.) Push and Hold was set to VoiceCommand on my device.
I'm assuming that ppl with other devices could setup another button of their choice to pop up the keyboard. To do this go to Start>Settings>Buttons and choose the desired button and set it to <Input Panel>
Hope this helps...

Can you hack the dll to use the same resources as the below dll?

the netui.dll displays similar information as in the non working "false" status used in the diallookup.dll if you can replace the resources maybe they will display the correct information then.

UPDATE: I no longer use the PTT Fix to display the Input Panel as I have added the PTT service to my line. I didn't feel like changing any of the other hardware buttons with the exception of the Comm Manager which I'm using for Voice Command (and Comm Mgr is accessible from Tray anyways). So I found another way... Using Vijay's Sipswitch.exe app and creating a shortcut to launch the app using the Keyboard parameter. Next I installed Philippe Majerus' PHM Tray Launcher and mapped the modified shortcut I created earlier. This puts a little icon on the Tray which opens the Input Panel.
Attached are screenshots and the CAB that does all the work for you...for those who may need this anyways. Thanks to Vijay and Philippe for these little tools!
INSTRUCTIONS: Install CAB, Navigate to Start>Programs> and open PhmTrayLaunch.exe and check the "Enable" box and exit(The shortcut is already mapped for you.)
