View Full Version : How are we going to carry this thing

OK, I am having a case crisis for the Universal.
It is too heavy for pockets. Carrying it closed for protection has problems (don't know about hinging that screen that many times, voice call doesn't work, can't see who's calling, etc.) so I will probably end up carrying it face up, and need protection for the screen. So the case is a must.
Here is what I could find that is available for the JasJar. Please share your opinions, experiences.
- The case that comes with JasJar: I am not going to say anything.
- XaX Leather Case: Seen this one in person. A very tight fit, and not a good one. I couldn't figure out how to make the camera work without taking it out of the case. It took me about 30 seconds of fiddling with it to decide I don't want it. http://www.expansys-usa.com/product.asp?code=125516
- The case at tabfone. I have no other info on this other than the picture they have which shows nothing. http://www.tabfone.com/pro_per_content.asp?id=82
- Proporta pouch case. I like pouch cases/holsters, so I am considering this one. I wish they had more descriptive pictures though. http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05.php?t_id=1354&t_mode=des
- Proporta book-like case: This looks good in the pictures, but what is that plastic wrap thing around the keyboard. Looks like it is a little pocket where the base slides in. How are we supposed to use the keyboard?
http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05.php?t_id=1353&t_mode=des
- PDair Leather Book Case: This looks similar to the Proporta book case. The last image (click on the main image) shows the problems of using the camera with book cases in general. http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/7749.htm
More pictures here: http://www.gadgetair.com/scripts/main/viewitem.php?itemid=1921&pdaid=190
- Non descript case: This one looks like the Xax. I like the horizontal carrying mode. http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/7866.htm

I am also particularly interested in those that do buy and their feedback. Initial impressions are that it is going to add significant size to an already existing large size, it it gets much bigger we'll need a backpack. :)

I think that a vertical hanging case will work best becuase of the length of the unit. I have a T-Mobile pouch with a belt clip that came with my HP 6315 and the Jasjar fits perfectly in it. When I clip it to my waist there is a big bulg since it is in a horizontal position if I am wearing a suit jacket or an outside hanging shirt. I think if it was just hanging vertically it wouldnt even be noticeable.

I agree. I have a VajaCase for my XDA II with a belt clip that swivels.

It is just great. Unfortunately Vaja don't make a case for the HTC Universal yet.

Vaja once made a great case for a Sony PDA that also had a swivel screen. It was super thin but provided protection from scratches. I cant remember what the model of the Sony PDA was but it was several years ago. I put the case on the Clie and never took it off. The top part would just slip off screen so you could swivel the screen around. I have purchased several cases from them and this one im mentioning was the best ever. I am going to email them right now and make a request they make a similar case for the Universal.

Not a problem - it swivels out of the road!
The XDA II is the same length, slightly longer actually, just not as thick or heavy.

Do you have any plans for a case for the HTC Universal PDA known as the
"XDA Exec", "iMate Jasjar", "Qtek 9000", "MDA Pro", "SPV M5000", "Dopod
900" and "VPA IV"?
I have upgraded to this model and I miss my Vaja case!
Oh well,
here is my response from Vaja:
We still canŽt assure you if weŽre going to develop a case for that device.
Anyway, weŽll contact you in case we do.
Thanks for your interest in our products!

i just love my jasjar! the last few days i have gone without a case. this was one of the reasons i liked the idea of the rotating screen. i feel its safe in my pocket with the screen protected.

OK so guys Forget about expansys.... I mean I always heard bad stuff n them, but my first purchase from them will be the last. I order my case, and after several days no change on my order, I called them and they said that I would have to wait 2 to 3 weeks to get my case....
JUST FOR A CASE !
i've bought several items from expansys-US(jam,sp3i and jasjar). i never had problems from them in terms of shipping or product availability.

GM,
Did you buy your Jasjar from the USA Expansys site. If so, when? I saw it listed last month and order one, but now my "order tracking" says that it has been discontinued.
Where have others in the states bought their Jasjar from?
Thanks

I got my Jasjar from Expansys USA as well.
I don't have any experience with him, but madmonkeyboy (www.madmonkeyboy.com) has been highly recommended as well.
Good luck,

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll have to give expansys a call. By the way, what was the date that you ordered your Jasjar from expansys? And what did they charge? Thanks.

hi zwuncki:
does the "universal" case from piel frama fit really well the jasjar? i looked at the specs on piel frama's web site and the "maximum dimensions"listed are 129 x 78 x 21 mm. The JASJAR is quoted as 127.7 x 81 x 25 mm, so it seems it is thicker and wider than the maximum "allowed" by piel frama.
does it fit really well in your experience?
does the belt clip rotate?
thanks,
fernando
Krusell will have a custom JJ case out in 5 weeks. Their universal PDA case seems suitable for the JJ; I have ordered one and will report back when it arrives. See here:

Has anyone tried any of the proporta.com offerings? I have used them before for my xda ii and iis and they were great. I'm not sure if i will actualy use a case, for me it seems perfectly safe with the screen tucked away, but if anyone has had any experience where it wasn't please let me know!
Fin
@findus, the Proporta case looks like a variation of the PDair case. I have a PDair case and it is good fit and does the job. The Proporta seems better as it has an additional slide-in/out screen protector for when you want to use your JJ/Exec in slate format. The PDair case is a lot cheaper and IMHO does increase the bulk of the JJ. But it does to have a belt clip unlike the Proporta case.

In my opinion a case for the universal will be totally annoying if you really use the device professionally. It will be another delaying factor to respond.
I just ordered my second holster from Tuff as Nutts, a New Zealand company that makes high quality leather holsters for mobile devices.
The old one I had I used for my first XDA, MDA II and my Hx 4700. they all fitted well and after 4 years the holster is still in great shape after a lot of (ab)use.....
Unfortunately now it is to small for my Universal so I ordered a new one:

Hi
Mobiles like the universal could be the think to see the 'Man Bag' become commonplace!! After-all your average female customer wont be looking for a case beyond the one that comes with the device - she'll just shove it in her tardis!

I don't like the idea of the exec with a case permanently attached - I just got the thing yesterday, and am using an old Lowepro Sliplock Pouch 10 - fits grandly, and is well protected from the elements - I attach it to the straps of my bag via a carabiner, so I've got easy access while walking, cycling etc.
Hey - I'm a cheapskate!!! :)
