I just received my new exec and it's been on charge for 3 hours now and the charge light is still red?
The manual says it should be amber turning to green when full..(like my XDA2i)
I rang O2 cust service and they said 16 hours charge is minimum ... Ive no problem with that but would feel happier if I knew some others of you had the same thing happen...
Needless to say, when I press the power button, it doesn't fire up at all..

Anyone? :?:

TIA

Keith

Does not sound right to me - you should be able to use the device when connetced to the mains. My battery was 70% charged when I got my device so I used it until it was 20% and then I charged it for the first time for 7 hours (over night) and the battery had charged ("green" indicator).

Thanks for that...the red has now extinguished so I am in hope the amber will appear soon :?
In any case, looks like O2 won't treat it as a problem till i've had it on for the long charge so tomorrow I can progress it.
It's possible, of course, that this had no charge in it or the backup battery, when it arrived today (depends on if it's been lying around for a long time, we know it's come from the far east, so it's possible)

I'll update later with results.

thnx for your prompt reply

OK Update:
No joy with charging.. got back to customer service who just said send it back and we will send you a replacement.. great problems with me being around for delivery etc make this a real pain.
I asked for the technical advice people and was put through to data team technical.
He had me trying to put it into bootloader mode etc but nothing.
I checked the battery and it's giving out 9.6 volts open circuit.
I checked the battery pins in the exec when the charger is in and ..yes 9.6 volts.
Conclusion dead machine.. so here we go with a trip to the post office tomorrow.. ho hum... i've sat and watched the thin on my desk all day and not even seen the screen lit..
just like a chinese water torture LOL

Bad luck mate - I hate it when stuff like that happens.

FYI: there's no backup battery. With persistent storage you don't need one; there's nothing to back up. All your data is stored in ROM so nothing gets lost if you take the battery out and leave it.

Yeah, that's probably one of the best things about this phone...it's no longer a headache if you happen to have no battery left. Well, only as much as any other phone anyway.

I know you're supposed to leave any phone charging the first time as even though they're Li-Ion it still has a memory of sorts. After the XDA I stopped doing that, and the 2, 2i and Exec seem perfectly fine to me. Once it got to green each time, I consider that to be "the battery doesn't need charging any more" and I started using it.

I know you're also supposed to let it then discharge completely a good few times at first, but that's harder as how are you supposed to sync (other than via BT) and get your data? Good luck with the getting the replacement.

Bakerk, Are you charging via usb to a laptop or direct to the mains?

Hi Fluffy
I used the mains charger but also tried the usb one.. I confirmed charging voltage is getting to the battery so it's def the machine dead...I was so wound up I was tempted to see if it bounced earler today
Anyway now it's all packed up and goes off to the post office when I get to work tomorrow.

Then it's just the old DHL lottery.. where will they deliver it? ..work as requested? or home as they did today... Ho hum....

One day i'll be sitting here with my exec all fired up and working and this will just be a dim memory....

Mine's due in the morning :)

For the record how long should you charge it initially? I think I read 8 hours somewhere, doesn't seem to be anything on the PDF of the manual I downloaded.

Thanks

Hope yours arrives safe and sound! :D
My manual says (page 17/Getting Started):

"
Charge the battery
New batteries are shipped partially charged. Before you can use your device, you need to install and charge the battery. Some batteries perform best after several full charge/discharge cycles. You can charge the battery by:
- Connecting your device directly to an external power source
- Plugging the device sync cable into the USB port on your PC
"

That's all it says. Hmm, I was sure it recommended an 8-hour conditioning charge...

The Quick Start manual says you should charge for 8 hours. But I never follow these instructions - my battery was 70% charged when I received my Exec so decided to use it until it was really low on charge (20%) before I charged it overnight.

Li-ion Polymer my battery is, im sure i read somewhere that these batteries dont go by the old rules, apparently they prefer contantly topping up after the initial charge , discharge, charge. something like that, its all so distant and vague,

i recall my battery dying the other week and when i plugged into mains all i had was a red led for about 10 mins, then went orange and device then powered up, sh*t my pants i did

I tested the theory with my Nokia 9500. I used two new batteries and with one I followed the manual and with the other I ran it down to 20% before charing. The one that I treated as if it were a NiCad did actually last 20 to 30% longer after the first three complete cycles. So and pratice and theory can differ.

As a matter of interest, I am going to break all the rules tomorrow and send the thing back by special delivery adding on the cost to insure it for it's full value.
Can you imagine the furore if it got lost after i followed their instructions and"popped it in the 1st class post".. Yes precisely.. I would have to whistle for a replacement.
Once all is done and dusted and I have a good machine, I shall proceed to seek back the cost of returning it..as a matter of principle.
Think about it, it's insured on it's way to you (By DHL) but not when you return it... crazy
